Book excerpt: From one angle, My Molly (Departed) represents a performance whose protagonist is nomadic language itself. From another, it represents the circus of a short-circuited mind in motion (call it the Broken Author Function, Botched Literary History, the effects of a computer virus of text generator) shot through with loss, energetic fluster, and, by its very exhilirated being-in-the-world, pure plain thrill. - Lance Olsen, author of Theories of Forgetting Reading Talan Memmott's Molly is like listening to a vinyl record of the Western literary unconscious, of indecent solo longings brutalized into words, skipping on a tiny grain of dust, and the dust is the evidence of shared longings, and that is indecent too. Everything is fucked up, and it's almost beautiful. - Anna Joy Springer author of The Vicious Red Relic, Love
Book Synopsis Digital Modernism by : Jessica Pressman
Download or read book Digital Modernism written by Jessica Pressman and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2014-02 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital Modernism examines how and why some of the most innovative works of online electronic literature adapt and allude to literary modernism. Digital literature has been celebrated as a postmodern form that grows out of contemporary technologies, subjectivities, and aesthetics, but this book provides an alternative genealogy. Exemplary cases show electronic literature looking back to modernism for inspiration and source material (in content, form, and ideology) through which to critique contemporary culture. In so doing, this literature renews and reframes, rather than rejects, a literary tradition that it also reconfigures to center around media. To support her argument, Pressman pairs modernist works by Pound, Joyce, and Bob Brown, with major digital works like William Poundstone's "Project for the Tachistoscope: [Bottomless Pit]" (2005), Young-hae Chang Heavy Industries's Dakota, and Judd Morrissey's The Jew's Daughter. With each pairing, she demonstrates how the modernist movement of the 1920s and 1930s laid the groundwork for the innovations of electronic literature. In sum, the study situates contemporary digital literature in a literary genealogy in ways that rewrite literary history and reflect back on literature's past, modernism in particular, to illuminate the crucial role that media played in shaping the ambitions and practices of that period.

Book excerpt: For Reece Hensley, the extraordinary Barclay Manor was somewhere she would never be welcomed. However for her sister Olivia, it was a fantasy kingdom, where their beautiful Aunt Norah had married her prince, Garrett Barclay, and went there to live only to disappear. Reece accepted their fathers explanation, that Norah had taken money from Garretts account and ran away with a lover. Olivia was not so easily persuaded. The narcissistic Norah had wanted nothing more than to become a Barclay and Olivia would not believe she would ever deviate from that dream. Norah had not contacted her family for four years after she married Garrett even though they lived only few miles from Barclay. It was no surprise to the Hensleys because Norahs expectations did not included her brother or her nieces. When Reece and Olivia happen to meet Garretts dashing brother, Nicolas, in the valley between their homes, the sisters become involved with the Barclay family, only to be drawn into love, intrigue, deceit and danger.

Book excerpt: Some of my earliest memories were of my Grandparents telling stories about The Santo Ermitano (The Holy Hermit), the miracles he performed and the legend he created. I could only find a few excerpts of his life on this continent. It has been over 150 years since he died. I have spent years since my childhood wondering who he was and where he came from. Most of his story as I see it has been a fantasy to me.The facts of his travels here in the US and the way that he died are documented and based in reality.

Colin left the force to start his own private detective agency, specializing in helping reunite people with their lost pets. He soon knew he needed a partner. When Colin first met Molly, his friends doubted that she would be up for the job. Where Colin was battle-tested after a long and varied career, Molly was young and inexperienced. Not only that, she had a reputation for bad behavior. But Colin could tell that Molly was unusually charismatic and intelligent. Today, Molly has overcome all the odds to become Colin’s invaluable deputy. Together, they are unstoppable—even if Molly still occasionally steals food from people’s plates. Molly is no ordinary deputy, but a black Cocker Spaniel, and this is no ordinary detective agency. Colin and Molly are the man-and-dog team behind “The UK Pet Detective Agency,” and they are the Sherlock and Watson for finding people’s lost pets.
