Book excerpt: From the creator of the popular website Ask a Manager and New York’s work-advice columnist comes a witty, practical guide to 200 difficult professional conversations—featuring all-new advice! There’s a reason Alison Green has been called “the Dear Abby of the work world.” Ten years as a workplace-advice columnist have taught her that people avoid awkward conversations in the office because they simply don’t know what to say. Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . [Alison Green’s] advice boils down to the idea that you should be professional (even when others are not) and that communicating in a straightforward manner with candor and kindness will get you far, no matter where you work.”—Booklist (starred review) “The author’s friendly, warm, no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read, and her advice can be widely applied to relationships in all areas of readers’ lives. Ideal for anyone new to the job market or new to management, or anyone hoping to improve their work experience.”—Library Journal (starred review) “I am a huge fan of Alison Green’s Ask a Manager column. This book is even better. It teaches us how to deal with many of the most vexing big and little problems in our workplaces—and to do so with grace, confidence, and a sense of humor.”—Robert Sutton, Stanford professor and author of The No Asshole Rule and The Asshole Survival Guide “Ask a Manager is the ultimate playbook for navigating the traditional workforce in a diplomatic but firm way.”—Erin Lowry, author of Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping By and Get Your Financial Life Together

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating book relates all the excitement, mystery, danger, and adventure of living and traveling in Siberia. It all started back in 1991, when I received an invitation via the Gorbachev government, in conjunction with a mining company working with the Soviet Union, to visit, write about, photograph, and film what the country had to offer American tourists and hunters. This was the era of "Glasnost" and "Perestroika." Gorbachev wanted to bring in American tourists to bolster the sagging economy. That first expedition led to 22 years traveling back and forth to the former Soviet Union - now Russia - where I hung out with the KGB, met numerous dignitaries, and lived in tents and trappers' cabins in Siberia with the local natives. We were attacked by bears, wild boars, and moose! Among those traveling with me were Apollo Astronaut Jim McDivitt, who was stalked by a Russian bear, and a four-star air force general, Earl O'Loughlin, who used to fly spy plane missions over the former Soviet Union. This made for a very interesting confrontation with the KGB. During my time in Siberia, I got to know many of the native people, who relayed numerous sad and harrowing stories of encounters with giant bears. The book is jam-packed with historical perspective of what was happening at this time in Russia, including how the people lived, worked, survived, and what they thought of Americans. While framed by hunting, this book is as much about the people and the culture of Siberia. About the Author Now retired, Michigan native Denny Geurink was previously a teacher and the Midwest editor for Field & Stream magazine. He wrote a weekly newspaper outdoor column for nearly forty years. Publisher's website: http: //sbprabooks.com/DennyGeurink

The author also describes what makes a Good Psychologist and Good Psychology, so you can get Good Psych, the therapy that does you good. At the core of the book is a fearless insight into real therapy with real case studies. Each case provides unique insights into the murky world of psychological therapy. “A refreshingly honest appraisal of the dysregulated mental health services that the public and practitioners are faced with. Conclusion Authors Bio Publisher Introduction I got this idea as an eye-opener about American banking processes and systems and their comparison with other systems all over the world, when I was speaking to my publisher, Mr. Davidson about the amount of interest being paid by American banks to their account holders. When he said 0.25%. I was shocked. Literally open mouthed. For a moment I thought 25%, which was pretty high and in keeping with the prosperous state of American finances and economy as seen through the rest of the world. But when I saw the decimal point, it was – I Do Not Believe That. In America? Not even 2.5%? The rest of the world looks up to America as one of the great financial leaders of the world. However, Americans do not know that for more than 250 years, they are being regularly stolen from, by their own bankers because naturally the bankers are not going to educate them or inform them about the unethical banking practices practiced down the generations, and they have been getting away with that with impunity. This book is an eye-opener, written by an ex-banker, So Friends, Brothers, Americans, lend me thy ears, I come not to praise your banking system, but to bury it. In this book, you are going to get to know all about America’s history of banking, this system’s encouragement of your reliance on credit cards, depth, consolidation, mortgage system, and other practices, which you have taken for granted because your parents and their parents and their parents did that.

When Caroll Simpson fell in love with a cabin located on pristine Babine Lake in BC, many miles away from her home in Washington State, she knew her life was about to change. After convincing her husband to abandon their dream of living aboard a sailboat, they began the complicated process of buying the lodge and moving north. For two years, their adventure was a blissful dream. Then, tragedy struck. Following the sudden death of her husband, Simpson was forced to decide her next move alone, amidst deep grief—would she sell the lodge, or would she stay, continuing the process of pursuing Canadian citizenship and running this remote lodge by herself? No easy feat, given accessing the lodge in summer required a forty-mile round trip by boat and, in the winter, a passage on an ice breaker barge and a treacherous snowshoe trek. This heartfelt memoir tells Simpson's story—of living in the remote wilderness and managing the lodge, becoming an accidental environmental activist, fending off wild animals, working as an angling guide and finally, at the height of her career, fighting off a proposed mining operation and participating in the development of a government land plan as a spokesperson for the wilderness tourism industry.

Written by one of the industry's most knowledgeable client services executives, the book begins with a definition, then follows a path from an initial new business win to beginning, building, losing, then regaining trust with clients. It is a powerful source of counsel for those new to the business, for industry veterans who want to refresh or validate what they know, and for anyone in the middle of the journey to get better at what they do.
