Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Language Teaching, Vol. 1: The Official Organ of the Modern Language Association The Annual General Meeting of the Modem Language Association was held at University College, Manchester, on January 12 and 13, 1905. On Thursday, January 12, the chair was taken by the President (Professor M. E. Sadler, M.A., Victoria University of Manchester). The Vice-Chancellor of Victoria University, Dr. Hopkinson, attended at the commencement of the proceedings to welcome the Society. He said that it was with very great pleasure that he heart! that the Society intended to meet in Manchester this year, and that it would be agreeable to them to meet within the walls of the Victoria University. The meeting at Manchester was especially pleasant to him owing to the fact that it was to be held under the presidency of one of the Professors of the University whoso presence there was ever welcome. He would like to offer, on behalf of the University, a most hearty welcome to the Society, both to Manchester and to tho University. The work of the Modem Language Association was a necessary one, although older and younger Universities alike were recognising more and more the important place which modern languages and the teaching of them would occupy in equipping students for their afterlife. The subject hail to be looked at from that point of view by those persons who had the working of educational institutions, and were brought into contact with parents, and were acquainted with their aspirations, their means, and the hopes which they entertained for the future of their children. Book excerpt: As the effects of European integration become more widely felt the effective teaching of modern languages is moving towards the centre of the educational agenda and more and more schools are considering starting pupils on a first foreign language other than French - a development encouraged by the National Curriculum orders in Modern Languages. Diversification in Modern Language Teaching gives language teachers and heads of department the evidence upon which to decide if diversification is right for them. It looks at the factors which effect children's learning in this area and at the managerial issues both within and outside the school. Throughout it argues that the decision must be a purely educational one, based on pupil motivation and accessibility as well as on particular local strengths among staff and parents.

Book excerpt: Over the last decade task-based approaches to language learning and teaching (TBLT) have become a global focus of increased levels of research. Governments around the world have turned to TBLT as a potential solution for curricula that lack authentic and meaningful engagement with language learning and are failing to motivate students as a result. This book focuses on Asia, where this shift has been particularly in evidence. TBLT has often been implemented in top-down approaches to curriculum development, which presents a huge range of challenges at the cultural as well as the pedagogic level. Contemporary Task Based Language Teaching in Asia looks at the drivers, stakeholders and obstacles across the region. Some countries have adapted TBLT to deal with the local constraints, others have found it hard to apply and many are still in the process of investigating its implementation in their specific contexts. This collection is important to all involved in language development, from curriculum reform to materials development. It assists from programme evaluation to the setting of assessment standards. The chapters cover all aspects of language education across Asia, from primary to tertiary, private and public education, as well as innovations at local, regional and national levels.

Book excerpt: The Arabic Classroom is a multicontributor work for trainee and in-service teachers of Arabic as a foreign language. Collected here is recent scholarly work, and also critical writing from Arabic instructors, Arabists and language experts, to examine the status of the teaching and learning of Arabic in the modern classroom. The book stresses the inseparability of the parameters of contexts, texts and learners in the effective Arabic classroom and investigates their role in enhancing the experience of teaching and learning Arabic. The book also provides a regional perspective through global case studies and encourages Arabic experts to search for better models of instruction and best practices beyond the American experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an account of classroom observation in a historical and educational perspective. Drawing on extracts from classic studies in this field, Dick Allwright reviews the development of research and experiment since the 1970's. The book thus not only provides a background to recent research, but also identifies areas for future development. Stress is laid on the link to be made between practice and research and it is argued that policy-making. either at classroom or institutional level, is heavily dependent on descriptive accounts of classroom reality.
