Download or read book Mnemosyne written by Mario Praz and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2023-10-17 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic study of the timeless relationship between literature and the visual arts In his search for a common link between literature and the visual arts, Mario Praz draws on the abundant evidence of mutual understanding and correspondence they have long shared. Praz explains that within literature, each epoch has “its peculiar handwriting or handwritings, which, if one could interpret them, would reveal a character, even a physical appearance,” and while these characteristics belong to the general style of a given period, the personality of the writer does not fail to pierce through. Praz contends that something similar occurs in art. He shows how the likeness between the arts within various periods of history can ultimately be traced to structural similarities that arise out of the characteristic way in which the people of a certain epoch see and memorize facts aesthetically. Mnemosyne, at once the goddess of memory and the mother of the muses, presides over this view of the arts. In illustrating her influence, Praz ranges widely through Western sources, providing an incomparable tour of the literary and pictorial arts.

Download or read book Keats and Romantic Celticism written by C. Gallant and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-06-01 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Celtic Revival began more than a century before Yeats and the Irish Literary Renaissance. Keats and Romantic Celtism is the first book to consider the pervasive influence of period Celticism upon Keats's work, from the Druidism that underlies his unfinished epics to the Celtic-derived folklore that his poetry draws upon. Christine Gallant shows that more than two hundred and fifty traditional folklore motifs of the faerie fill his major poems, as well as minor epistolary ones that have been critically neglected.

Book excerpt: Meet Mal: Unemployed. Antisocial. A god’s living weapon. The old gods are fighting for control of the modern world. But to keep their wars secret from the mortals, they need the Marked: humans ripped from their ordinary lives, gifted with divine power, and trained to work from the shadows to ensure their gods’ victory… by any means necessary. Join reluctant assassin Mal Keyne on her first four adventures as she protects New York City from Hades’s rivals, struggles to reclaim her lost humanity, and rushes in where angels fear to tread. Death Trace: It’s been ten years since Mal died. Five years since the god Hades dragged her from the underworld and forged her, through blood and pain, into his living weapon. And in five minutes, the only other agent of Hades she trusts will die… Memory Game: With Hades’s temple in ruins, Mal has a new mission—keep humanity from discovering the truth behind the attack. And Mnemosyne, goddess of memory, is happy to help. All she wants in return is one human dead… a human who happens to have the power to level entire buildings with a thought. Ghost Town: A single moment of weakness stopped Mal from closing an underworld gate. Now the city is paying the price. Two spirits are haunting the streets of Manhattan, and one of them has a body count. Night Terrors: When a plague of waking nightmares sweeps through New York, Mal’s race to save Hades’s last scrap of territory will turn her against her oldest friends, unearth a secret the gods themselves have kept buried for thousands of years, and test the limits of an alliance she thought was unshakable.
