Book excerpt: Mentor's Guide - Description This is the Mentor's Guide for the first of a three-volume series called, Mentoring His Way - Disciple Twelve based on the "Twelve Characteristics of a Godly Life." In this first book, we learn about the four "Spiritual Characteristics of a Godly Life." I am a Believer: I know Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Savior The first characteristic of a Godly life is about your assurance of knowing Christ as your personal Lord and Savior. To conform to the image of Christ, you need to have no doubts that He is in your life and that you are assured of your relationship with Him and that you have eternal life. I am Empowered: I am controlled and empowered by the Holy Spirit The second spiritual characteristic of a Godly life is understanding the power we have available to live the Christian life. Each day we choose to gratify the desires of the flesh or the will of the Spirit. Our spirit is satisfied only when we are totally surrendered to the control of God the Holy Spirit. I am Victorious: I have Christ's authority over all the enemy's power The third spiritual characteristic of a Godly life is to apply Christ's power over Satan. People struggle with temptation every day. We can have real victory over sin by exercising Christ's authority over all of Satan's influence. Because we have Christ in us, He gives us the power and authority over the enemy to stop his attacks. I am a Warrior: I put on all of God's armor in order to defeat Satan The fourth spiritual characteristic of a Godly life is learning how to put on the full armor of God for warfare against the enemy. God promised a way to keep temptation from becoming so strong that we could not stand up against it. He gave us six pieces of armor and instructions for their use. This gives Christians the ability to walk in the Spirit instead of walking in the flesh. Volume Two covers the "Personal Characteristics of a Godly Life." Volume Three covers the "Lifestyle Characteristics of a Godly Life."

Book excerpt: This is the Mentor's Guide for the second of a three-volume series called, Mentoring His Way - Disciple Twelve based on the "Twelve Characteristics of a Godly Life." In this second book, we learn about the four "Personal Characteristics of a Godly Life." Being Physically Pure - I belong to God and honor Him with every part of my body. The first personal characteristic of living a Godly life is about how we are to use our bodies. To exemplify the person of Christ, we need to control our bodies by putting them under the control of the Holy Spirit. The body manifests the values of the spirit and soul. Our values and character are developed deep within our soul. Our character is manifested through the body by our behavior. When the body is under the control of the Holy Spirit, it is an obedient servant. Being Love Motivated - I love my family more than I love myself. The second personal characteristic of a Godly life is understanding the importance of the family. In no other place is it more important to remember that our purpose as Christians is to conform to the image of Christ. To have a Godly life, we need to make love our motive in all relationships, especially relationships within our family. Love needs to be the golden thread that holds our families together Being Extremely Valued - I know and love who I am in Christ. I am extremely valued. The third personal characteristic of a Godly life is about the person - primarily our self-image. As others emulate our lives, it is important that we exemplify a positive attitude about who we are in Christ. To do this, we must first know how special we are to our Heavenly Father, because of our relationship in Christ. Being Christ-actualized - I am Christ-actualized rather than self-actualized. The fourth personal characteristic of a Godly life is learning how to apply motivation. Motivation is the inner drive in each of us that keeps us continuously striving toward the attainment of the goals we have set until such attainment is achieved. Having a Godly Life means that we are motivated to become like Christ. Volume One covers the "Spiritual Characteristics of a Godly Life." Volume Three covers the "Lifestyle Characteristics of a Godly Life."

Book excerpt: Drawing on the author’s extensive experience training mentors, The Mentor’s Way outlines eight rules for engaging in a mentoring relationship. Nemanick examines the ways in which mentoring differs from managing or leading, and details the various roles of the mentor as a role model, motivator, confidant, coach, and more. Readers will learn how to develop successfully in each of these roles while helping a protégé to develop his or her own skills. Clear and elegant chapters, each prefaced with a real-world example, emphasize to readers that their role as a mentor lies in listening and responding to a protégé’s individual strengths and needs. Special attention is paid to creating a safe space, displaying empathy, and fielding a protégé’s questions while knowing what to ask as a mentor. The author takes the anxiety out of the mentorship journey, accompanying practical insight with chapter exercises that are designed to help readers use their own experiences to identify best practice. Suggested topics for difficult mentor/protégé conversations allow readers to facilitate a stronger, more open relationship with their protégé. This practical guide will provide mentors with the toolkit they need to get the most out of a relationship with their protégés.

Book excerpt: Growing Mentor Intelligence is about living a purposeful life, strategically aligned with your goals and connecting through a revolving door of mutually beneficial mentoring relationships. Learn practical techniques to become an effective mentor and mentee. Whether you're a young professional or a seasoned veteran, cultivating your Mentor Intelligence is a skill that once developed, can yield immeasurable reward that can last a lifetime. In this book, COL (RET) Alan Landry shares proven techniques for building mentor intelligence with precision, strategic vision and intention. With a signature 5-Step "ALtuitive Method," Landry offers an original process for highly successful mentoring arrangements. This method has become intuitive to him over four decades of his own mentoring experience in military, government and corporate organizations. Landry believes the need for effective mentoring is greater now than ever before, and through his proven approach, organizations and teams can grow to realize their true potential. His unique approach focuses on: Creating the mentoring relationship and defining expectations. Creating self-awareness through a Personal Asset Inventory. Building a Personal Development Timeline. Developing Personal Life Strategies using an incremental approach that minimizes risk and increases opportunities. Executing intentional Life Strategies one step at a time while staying connected to your own unique skills, talents and passions in life. While this method defines what good mentoring processes might look like, Landry's "four critical behaviors for mentees" and "10 critical practices for mentors" suggest ethical guidelines for both sides of the mentor relationship as they embark on the method together. Landry's work is redefining national conversations about what mentoring means and how to do it with integrity, from the highest organizational levels to academia to the personal level. Landry infuses meaning, hope and practical stewardship into the art and science of mentoring. Book excerpt: Mentors are over-utilized, under-trained and, as studies show, under-deliver. From an employer's perspective, assigning a mentor is often a band-aid to a larger problem. From an employee's perspective, a lack of formal mentorship is seen as a serious, career-inhibiting problem, the equivalent of sailing a boat without a rudder. In The Mentor Myth, Debby Carreau represents this dichotomy, explaining that while a mentor's counsel can be invaluable, it is not the silver bullet human resources professionals often purport it to be. The opinions of a mentor are one data point, one piece in the much more complex game of navigating a career. In fact, the increasing overreliance on mentorship can actually be a hindrance to a successful career. Instead of continually looking outward for career guidance, aspiring professionals must realize that they possess all the tools necessary to take control of their own careers by using their own strengths, capabilities, and visions of success. Through her years of experience consulting, speaking, and writing about career development, Debby has created a comprehensive, easy-to-implement guide for taking ownership of your professional success. Debby begins by helping the reader create a professional roadmap, including how to build a personal brand, project the right amount of confidence, and manage time. She addresses mentors in the context of networks and sponsors, advising the reader how to incorporate outward influences rather than be defined by them.

This book is a rich combination of findings from the literature and practical tools, which together assist academic leaders and faculty in implementing and participating in a successful formal mentoring program that can be used as a strategy for maintaining the vitality of a diverse faculty across all stages of an academic career. In Faculty Success through Mentoring, the authors describe the tangible benefits of formal, traditional mentoring programs, in which mentor-mentee interactions are deliberate, structured, and goal-oriented. They outline the characteristics of effective mentors, mentees, and mentoring programs, and cover other models of mentoring programs, such as group and peer mentoring, which are particularly suited for senior and mid-career faculty. Also included are tools that institutions, mentors, and mentees can use to navigate successfully through the phases of a mentoring relationship. One of the unique features of this book is its explicit attention to the challenges to effective mentoring across genders, ethnicities, and generations. No matter what role one plays in mentoring, this book is an invaluable resource.
