Three avenues will be exploited to that effect: mechanics, empiricism and analysis (including numerical analysis). The book is uniquely dedicated to the theme of engineering in jointed rock to a much greater degree than earlier texts in rock mechanics and rock engineering, and there will be fundamental treatment and examples of the characterization, strength, deformability and permeability of joints and, in separate chapters, the same for rock masses. These fundamentals will be followed by their application in numerical models, for developing the engineering design for rock slopes, tunnels, bridge foundations, dam abutments, nuclear waste disposal, mine shafts and roadways. Empirical design will be validated and improved by numerical modelling where necessary. The text will be permeated with informative and illustrated case records from the authors’ total of 40 countries sphere of experience. Solutions of every-day problems will be interspersed with experiences from the longest tunnel, the widest cavern, the highest dam, the site of the largest underground power house, and the problems with the deepest TBM tunnels. This much needed text on the mechanics of jointed rock, based on extensive experiments and measurements both in the laboratory and in the field, will be indispensable for the rock engineering and rock mechanics community.

The book quantitatively explains actual advance rates as high as five m/hr for one day or as low as 0.005 m/hr for several months. It also covers logging methods, empirical TBM tunnel support design, and numerical verification of support.

This discipline emerged as a subject in its own right about thirty five years ago, and has developed rapidly ever since. However, rock mechanics is still based to a large extent on analytical techniques that were originally formulated for the mechanical design of structures made from man made materials. The single most important distinction between man-made materials and the natural material rock is that rock contains fractures, of many kinds on many scales; and because the fractures - of whatever kin- represent breaks in the mechanical continuum, they are collectively termed 'discontinuities' . An understanding of the mechanical influence of these discontinuities is essential to all rock engineers. Most of the world is made of rock, and most of the rock near the surface is fractured. The fractures dominate the rock mass geometry, deformation modulus, strength, failure behaviour, permeability, and even the local magnitudes and directions of the in situ stress field. Clearly, an understanding of the presence and mechanics of the discontinuities, both singly and in the rock mass context, is therefore of paramount importance to civil, mining and petroleum engineers. Bearing this in mind, it is surprising that until now there has been no book dedicated specifically to the subject of discontinuity analysis in rock engineering.

In treating faults, this book limits itself to faults that are associated with joint sets produced by definable causes and occasi- ally to cases where interaction between the two types of fracture – faults and joints – is not clear. The book’s subject matter is divided over six chapters, which are briefly described below. Chapter 1 summarizes current key concepts in fracture physics. It starts with a pr- entation of the elastic theory of fracture, and concentrates on the results of linear el- tic fracture mechanics. The chapter touches also upon other fracture properties, e.g., crack nucleation, dynamic fracturing and slow fracturing processes. Nucleation is - dressed by statistical mechanics methods incorporating modern approaches of th- mal and fiber bundle processes.
