Book excerpt: As experiment to measure the neutron spin-dependent structure function g1(superscript n) (x) over a range in x from 0.04 to 0.7 and with Q2> 1 (GeV/c)2 is presented. The experiment consists of scattering a longitudinally polarized electron beam from the Stanford Linear Accelerator off a polarized 3He target and detecting scattered electrons in two magnetic spectrometers. The experiment will provide a critical test of the Bjorken sum rule and valuable information in understanding the nucleon spin structure and the violation of the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule. 3 figs., 1 tab.

Book excerpt: The authors have determined the neutron spin structure function g[sub 1][sup n] over the range 0.03 [le] x [le] 0.6 at an average Q[sup 2] of 2(GeV/c)[sup 2] by measuring the asymmetry in deep inelastic scattering of polarized electrons from a polarized [sup 3]He target. The experiment was performed at SLAC and used energies between 19 and 26 GeV. The neutron asymmetry turned out to be small and negative, and the integral of the neutron spin structure function is [integral][sub 0][sup 1]g[sub 1][sup n](x)dx = -0.024 [+-] 0.006(stat.) [+-] 0.008(syst.). Combined with the current available worldwide proton data, this result confirmed the Bjorken sum rule at 10% level, once high-order perturbative QCD corrections are taken into account. The Ellis-Jaffe sum rule for the neutron predicts [integral][sub 0][sup 1] g[sub 1][sup n](x)dx = -0.010 [+-] 0.012, roughly consistent with their result.

Book excerpt: A measurement of the nucleon spin asymmetries from deep inelastic scattering of polarized electrons by polarized [sup 3]He has been performed. The neutron spin structure function g[sub 1][sup n] is extracted and used to test the Bjorken sum rule. The neutron integral assuming a simple Regge theory extrapolation at low x is [integral][sub 0][sup 1]g[sub 1][sup n](x)dx = [minus]0.022 [plus minus] 0.011. Combined with the EMC proton results, the Bjorken sum rule predicts a neutron integral of [integral][sub 0][sup 1]g[sub 1][sup n](x)dx = [minus]0.065 [plus minus] 0.018.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation presents results of experiment E94-010 performed at Jefferson Laboratory (simply known as JLab) in Hall A. The experiment aimed to measure the low Q2 evolution of the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) integral from Q2 = 0.1 to 0.9 GeV2. The GDH sum rule at the real photon point provides an important test of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). The low Q2 evolution of the GDH integral contests various resonance models, Chiral Perturbation Theory ([chi] PT) and lattice QCD calculations, but more importantly, it helps us understand the transition between partonic and hadronic degrees of freedom. At high Q2, beyond 1 GeV2, the difference of the GDH integrals for the proton and the neutron is related to the Bjorken sum rule, another fundamental test of QCD. In addition, results of the measurements for the spin structure functions g1 and g2, cross sections, and asymmetries are presented. E94-010 was the first experiment of its kind at JLab. It used a high-pressure, polarized 3He target with a gas pressure of 10 atm and average target polarization of 35%. For the first time, the polarized electron source delivered an average beam polarization of 70% with a beam current of 15 micro A. The limit on the beam current was only imposed by the target. The experiment required six different beam energies from 0.86 to 5.1 GeV. This was the first time the accelerator ever reached 5.1 GeV. Both High-Resolution Spectrometers of Hall A, used in singles mode, were positioned at 15.5 ° each.

Book excerpt: A first measurement of the longitudinal asymmetry of deep-inelastic scattering of polarized electrons from a polarized 3He target at energies ranging from 19 to 26 GeV has been performed at SLAC. The spin-structure function of the neutron g1(superscript n) has been extracted from the measured asymmetries allowing for a test of the Ellis-Jaffe and Bjorken sum rules. The Quark Parton Model (QPM) interpretation of the nucleon spin-structure function is examined in light of the new results.

Book excerpt: The spin dependent cross sections, [sigma]T1/2 and [sigma]T3/2, and asymmetries, A[parallel] and A[perpendicular] for 3He have been measured at the Jefferson Lab's Hall A facility. The inclusive scattering process 3He(e, e)X was performed for initial beam energies ranging from 0.86 to 5.1 GeV, at a scattering angle of 15.5°. Data includes measurements from the quasielastic peak, resonance region, and the deep inelastic regime. An approximation for the extended Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integral is presented at a 4-momentum transfer Q2 of 0.2-1.0 GeV2. Also presented are results on the performance of the polarized 3He target. Polarization of 3He was achieved by the process of spin-exchange collisions with optically pumped rubidium vapor. The 3He polarization was monitored using the NMR technique of adiabatic fast passage (AFP). The average target polarization was approximately 35% and was determined to have a systematic uncertainty of roughly [plus or minus]4% relative.

Book excerpt: Nucleon spin physics will be studied in the HERMES experiment, that will use polarized internal targets of essentially pure atomic H, D, and 3He in the HERA electron storage ring at DESY. A series of measurements of spin-dependent properties of the nucleon and few-body nuclei will be made; the spin structure function g1(x) of the proton and neutron will be measured to test the Bjorken sum rule and study the fraction of the nucleon spin carried by quarks; the spin structure function g2W, sensitive to quark-gluon correlations, and the structure functions b1(x), and [Delta](x), sensitive to nuclear binding effects, will be measured; and, using the particle identification capability of the HERMES detector, pions will be detected in coincidence with the scattered electrons. The coincident hadron measurements represent the most important extension that can be made at this time to the existing measurements on the nucleon spin structure functions because they provide information about the flavor-dependence of the quark spin distribution in the nucleon. Argonne is providing the Cerenkov counter to be used for particle identification and developing the drifilm coating technique for the ultrathin target cell required for this experiment. The HERMES collaboration intends to use polarized targets with the highest available figures of merit, and the Argonne laser-driven source offers the most promise for a significant advance in present-day targets.

Book excerpt: Experiments using highly polarized intense beams and targets, and theoretical studies of spin and polarization phenomena, are now providing us with numerous additional details of the electroweak and strong interactions and the structure of matter. The spin structure of the nucleon has been measured over wide ranges of kinematic variables, and the cross sections have been calculated to several orders in perturbative field theory. At present, the influence of the higher twist contributions, the gluon spin, and the quark orbital angular momentum are under scrutiny. Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) captures a lot of our experimental knowledge of hard polarized scattering processes. Can our understanding of such processes within QCD be further improved?Hyperons produced in high energy reactions show how puzzling strong interactions between hadrons still are. Spin observables in experiments at intermediate energy are used to test parity and charge symmetries. Will they also reveal, at low energy, a violation of time reversal symmetry? We are on the verge of using parity violation measurements at intermediate electron scattering energies to determine the amount of strange quark contributions to the neutral weak form factor of the nucleon. The polarization of the sea quarks is expected to be measured soon in W± decays produced in high energy polarized proton interactions. Will the jets in polarized Z⁰ decays show a definite handedness? These and many other topics are discussed in these proceedings.

Book excerpt: A first measurement of the longitudinal asymmetry of deepinelastic scattering of Polarized electrons from a Polarized 3He target at energies ranging from 19 to 26 GeV ha, been performed at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC). The spin-Structure function of the neutron g1(superscript n) has been extracted from the measured asymmetries. The Quark Parton Model (QPM) interpretation of the nucleon spin-structure function is examined in light of the new results. A test of the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule (E-J) on the neutron is performed at high momentum transfer and found to be satisfied. Furthermore, combining the proton results of European Muon Collaboration (EMC) and the neutron results of E-142 the Bjoerken sum rule test is carried at high Q2 where higher order Perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (PQCD) corrections and higher-twist corrections are smaller. The sum rule saturated to within one standard deviation.

Book excerpt: This book collects all of the invited papers and contributions to the Discussion Sessions, presented at the 13th European Conference on Few-Body Problems in Physics, and is addressed to senior and young researchers and students interested in the field of few-body problems in elementary particle and nuclear physics, as well as in atomic and molecular physics. The volume contains a survey of recent, and not yet published results on theoretical and experimental investigations of the structure of hadrons and hadronic systems, novel theoretical methods suitable for an accurate treatment of the few-body problems in different fields, present status and future developments in muon catalysed fusion. A detailed illustration of the few-body physics programs of running (MIT-Bates, CEBAF, CERN, HERA, Mainz, NIKHEF, SATURNE, Saskatchewan, SLAC , TRIUMF) and proposed (European Electron Facility Project, Indiana cooler beam) experimental facilities represents a valuable feature of the book.
