Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every day approximately three-hundred thousand to four-hundred thousand new malware are registered, many of them being adware and variants of previously known malware. Anti-virus companies and researchers cannot deal with such a deluge of malware – to analyze and build patches. The only way to scale the efforts is to build algorithms to enable machines to analyze malware and classify and cluster them to such a level of granularity that it will enable humans (or machines) to gain critical insights about them and build solutions that are specific enough to detect and thwart existing malware and generic-enough to thwart future variants. Advances in Malware and Data-Driven Network Security comprehensively covers data-driven malware security with an emphasis on using statistical, machine learning, and AI as well as the current trends in ML/statistical approaches to detecting, clustering, and classification of cyber-threats. Providing information on advances in malware and data-driven network security as well as future research directions, it is ideal for graduate students, academicians, faculty members, scientists, software developers, security analysts, computer engineers, programmers, IT specialists, and researchers who are seeking to learn and carry out research in the area of malware and data-driven network security.

Book excerpt: The InfoSec Handbook offers the reader an organized layout of information that is easily read and understood. Allowing beginners to enter the field and understand the key concepts and ideas, while still keeping the experienced readers updated on topics and concepts. It is intended mainly for beginners to the field of information security, written in a way that makes it easy for them to understand the detailed content of the book. The book offers a practical and simple view of the security practices while still offering somewhat technical and detailed information relating to security. It helps the reader build a strong foundation of information, allowing them to move forward from the book with a larger knowledge base. Security is a constantly growing concern that everyone must deal with. Whether it’s an average computer user or a highly skilled computer user, they are always confronted with different security risks. These risks range in danger and should always be dealt with accordingly. Unfortunately, not everyone is aware of the dangers or how to prevent them and this is where most of the issues arise in information technology (IT). When computer users do not take security into account many issues can arise from that like system compromises or loss of data and information. This is an obvious issue that is present with all computer users. This book is intended to educate the average and experienced user of what kinds of different security practices and standards exist. It will also cover how to manage security software and updates in order to be as protected as possible from all of the threats that they face.

Book excerpt: At its core, information security deals with the secure and accurate transfer of information. While information security has long been important, it was, perhaps, brought more clearly into mainstream focus with the so-called “Y2K” issue. Te Y2K scare was the fear that c- puter networks and the systems that are controlled or operated by sofware would fail with the turn of the millennium, since their clocks could lose synchronization by not recognizing a number (instruction) with three zeros. A positive outcome of this scare was the creation of several Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) around the world that now work - operatively to exchange expertise and information, and to coordinate in case major problems should arise in the modern IT environment. Te terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 raised security concerns to a new level. Te - ternational community responded on at least two fronts; one front being the transfer of reliable information via secure networks and the other being the collection of information about - tential terrorists. As a sign of this new emphasis on security, since 2001, all major academic publishers have started technical journals focused on security, and every major communi- tions conference (for example, Globecom and ICC) has organized workshops and sessions on security issues. In addition, the IEEE has created a technical committee on Communication and Information Security. Te ?rst editor was intimately involved with security for the Athens Olympic Games of 2004.

Book excerpt: Honeypots have demonstrated immense value in Internet security, but physical honeypot deployment can be prohibitively complex, time-consuming, and expensive. Now, there’s a breakthrough solution. Virtual honeypots share many attributes of traditional honeypots, but you can run thousands of them on a single system-making them easier and cheaper to build, deploy, and maintain. In this hands-on, highly accessible book, two leading honeypot pioneers systematically introduce virtual honeypot technology. One step at a time, you’ll learn exactly how to implement, configure, use, and maintain virtual honeypots in your own environment, even if you’ve never deployed a honeypot before. You’ll learn through examples, including Honeyd, the acclaimed virtual honeypot created by coauthor Niels Provos. The authors also present multiple real-world applications for virtual honeypots, including network decoy, worm detection, spam prevention, and network simulation. After reading this book, you will be able to Compare high-interaction honeypots that provide real systems and services and the low-interaction honeypots that emulate them Install and configure Honeyd to simulate multiple operating systems, services, and network environments Use virtual honeypots to capture worms, bots, and other malware Create high-performance "hybrid" honeypots that draw on technologies from both low- and high-interaction honeypots Implement client honeypots that actively seek out dangerous Internet locations Understand how attackers identify and circumvent honeypots Analyze the botnets your honeypot identifies, and the malware it captures Preview the future evolution of both virtual and physical honeypots

Book excerpt: This book is focused on the use of deep learning (DL) and artificial intelligence (AI) as tools to advance the fields of malware detection and analysis. The individual chapters of the book deal with a wide variety of state-of-the-art AI and DL techniques, which are applied to a number of challenging malware-related problems. DL and AI based approaches to malware detection and analysis are largely data driven and hence minimal expert domain knowledge of malware is needed. This book fills a gap between the emerging fields of DL/AI and malware analysis. It covers a broad range of modern and practical DL and AI techniques, including frameworks and development tools enabling the audience to innovate with cutting-edge research advancements in a multitude of malware (and closely related) use cases.
