Book excerpt: John Carroll shows how a pervasive but underused element of design practice, the scenario, can transform information systems design. Difficult to learn and awkward to use, today's information systems often change our activities in ways that we do not need or want. The problem lies in the software development process. In this book John Carroll shows how a pervasive but underused element of design practice, the scenario, can transform information systems design. Traditional textbook approaches manage the complexity of the design process via abstraction, treating design problems as if they were composites of puzzles. Scenario-based design uses concretization. A scenario is a concrete story about use. For example: "A person turned on a computer; the screen displayed a button labeled Start; the person used the mouse to select the button." Scenarios are a vocabulary for coordinating the central tasks of system development—understanding people's needs, envisioning new activities and technologies, designing effective systems and software, and drawing general lessons from systems as they are developed and used. Instead of designing software by listing requirements, functions, and code modules, the designer focuses first on the activities that need to be supported and then allows descriptions of those activities to drive everything else. In addition to a comprehensive discussion of the principles of scenario-based design, the book includes in-depth examples of its application.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making Use of Deleuze in Planning translates and re-creates some of Gilles Deleuze’s most abstract philosophical concepts to form a new, practicable planning assessment tool. It shows what his philosophy can do for planning theory as well as planning assessment practice and, in doing so, sets out a pragmatic approach to Deleuzian studies: one that helps form bridges between ontological problems and the problems found in professional practice. It also breaks new ground in assessment methodology by challenging the essentialist ideas underpinning assessment methods like BREEAM and setting out and testing a new form of non-essentialist assessment named SIAM. The book argues that Deleuze’s philosophy can be made useful to planning as long as one is prepared to adapt and re-create his key ontological concepts to respond to the specific demands of the field.

Book excerpt: A study of the use of history as political ammunition and literature as historical counter-discourse in Mongane Serote's "Gods of Our Time", Mike Nicol's "The Ibis Tapestry", and Zakes Mda's "Ways of Dying". Moslund shows how literary engagement with the past seeks to rupture the continuity of a strongly dichotomised epistemology and through that dissolve the inherited polarisation of society. Falsification of history is exposed as constructed discourse and past simplifications of reality as sharply demarcated into homogenous self-justifying, categorisations of, Us against Them, are challenged with paradox, doubt and introspection.

Book excerpt: Alexander Grosse (1596–1654) was an able Puritan minister of presbyterian persuasion who wrote eight influential books from 1632 to 1656, none of which have been reprinted until now. This book, with its intriguing title about making a speedy use of Christ in every situation, is based on Colossians 2:9–10, “For in him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power.” Grosse first sets forth Christ’s fullness as above all created fullness and shows us the emptiness of everything compared to Christ. He contrasts the folly of not cleaving to and contenting ourselves with Christ to the wisdom of valuing Christ above all else. He then expounds how sinners come to Christ and obtain a saving interest in Him. Next, Grosse stresses how to make use of Christ and how to constantly submit to Him. He stresses the joy of those who are partakers of Christ and shows how believers mature spiritually by communion with Him. Their fullness flows out of apprehending the fullness of Christ. Finally, he expounds four marks that evidence the fullness of believers and provides four motives to labor for more mature fullness in personal spiritual life in and through Christ. Two appendices are added to this excellent, experiential Christ-exalting book—the first on the danger of neglecting Christ and the opportunity of grace and the second on the Lord Jesus as the soul’s sure and last refuge.

And what about enabling trapped airline passengers to escape safely in an emergency? Product designers and engineers face myriad such questions every day. Failure to answer them correctly can result in product designs that lead to injury or even death due to use error. Historically, designers and engineers have searched for answers by sifting through complicated safety standards or obscure industry guidance documents. Designing for Safe Use is the first comprehensive source of safety-focused design principles for product developers working in any industry. Inside you’ll find 100 principles that help ensure safe interactions with products as varied as baby strollers, stepladders, chainsaws, automobiles, apps, medication packaging, and even airliners. You’ll discover how protective features such as blade guards, roll bars, confirmation screens, antimicrobial coatings, and functional groupings can protect against a wide range of dangerous hazards, including sharp edges that can lacerate, top-heavy items that can roll over and crush, fumes that can poison, and small parts that can pose a choking hazard. Special book features include: Concise, illustrated descriptions of design principles Sample product designs that illustrate the book’s guidelines and exemplify best practices Literature references for readers interested in learning more about specific hazards and protective measures Statistics on the number of injuries that have arisen in the past due to causes that might be eliminated by applying the principles in the book Despite its serious subject matter, the book’s friendly tone, surprising anecdotes, bold visuals, and occasional attempts at dry humor will keep you interested in the art and science of making products safer. Whether you read the book cover-to-cover or jump around, the book’s relatable and practical approach will help you learn a lot about making products safe.
