Book excerpt: Sprinter, long jumper, and Paralympian Scout Bassett shares the lessons she’s learned battling the toughest challenges facing young women today. As an infant in China, Scout Bassett survived a fire that took her right leg. She spent the next seven years in an orphanage before being adopted and whisked away to the United States, where she felt foreign in every way. Though she defied the odds and became a gold medalist and world-record holder, Scout fought against adversity her entire life—and mostly off the track. As a person with a disability, a minority, and a woman in America, she’s struggled in a culture that can make anyone—no matter who you are—feel like an outsider—an other. In Lucky Girl Scout shares ten lessons she’s learned to help readers overcome some of the most difficult challenges in life today. With vulnerability, humor, and warmth, she addresses issues of identity, loneliness, image, purpose, and high expectations, among others, and offers advice for how to face them. Scout began her journey to embrace who she is—past and all—by never forgetting where she comes from or who she is. With this guidebook on adversity and life, learn how to make peace with your past, own your identity, and create your own luck.

Book excerpt: Longing for independence, a young sheltered Kenyan woman flees the expectations of her mother for a life in New York City that challenges all her beliefs about race, love, and family. “Readers will find a poignant, memorable voice they’ll feel lucky to have met.”—Harper’s Bazaar (Best Summer Beach Reads of 2023) Soila is a lucky girl by anyone’s estimation. Raised by her stern, conservative mother and a chorus of aunts, she has lived a protected life in Nairobi. Soila is headstrong and outspoken, and she chafes against her mother’s strict rules. After a harrowing assault by a trusted family friend, she flees to New York for college, vowing never to return home. New York in the 1990s is not what Soila imagined it would be. Instead of finding a golden land of opportunity, Soila is shocked by the entitlement of her wealthy American classmates and the poverty she sees in the streets. She befriends a Black American girl at school and witnesses the insidious racism her friend endures, forcing Soila to begin to acknowledge the legacy of slavery and the blind spots afforded by her Kenyan upbringing. When she falls in love with a free-spirited artist, a man her mother would never approve of, she must decide whether to honor her Kenyan identity and what she owes to her family, or to follow her heart and forge a life of her own design. Lucky Girl is a fierce and tender debut about the lives and loves we choose—what it meant to be an African immigrant in America at the turn of the millennium, and how a young woman finds a place for herself in the world.

Book excerpt: A hilarious and poignant reflection on what money can and cannot fix 58,642,129. That’s how many dollars seventeen-year-old Fortuna Jane Belleweather just won in the lotto jackpot. It’s also about how many reasons she has for not coming forward to claim her prize. Problem #1: Jane is still a minor, and if anyone discovers she bought the ticket underage, she’ll either have to forfeit the ticket, or worse . . . Problem #2: Let her hoarder mother cash it. The last thing Jane’s mom needs is millions of dollars to buy more junk. Then . . . Problem #3: Jane’s best friend, aspiring journalist Brandon Kim, declares on the news that he’s going to find the lucky winner. It’s one thing to keep her secret from the town — it’s another thing entirely to lie to her best friend. Especially when . . . Problem #4: Jane’s ex-boyfriend, Holden, is suddenly back in her life, and he has big ideas about what he’d do with the prize money. As suspicion and jealousy turn neighbor against neighbor, and no good options for cashing the ticket come forward, Jane begins to wonder: Could this much money actually be a bad thing?

Book excerpt: Lucky Girl, How I Became A Horror Writer is a story told across Christmases, rooted in loneliness, horror, and the ever-lurking presence of Krampus written by World Fantasy and Shirley Jackson Award-winning author M. Rickert. “Smooth and ruthless, Lucky Girl is M. Rickert at her ice-cold best.”—Laird Barron Ro, a struggling writer, knows all too well the pain and solitude that holiday festivities can awaken. When she meets four people at the local diner—all of them strangers and as lonely as Ro is—she invites them to an impromptu Christmas dinner. And when that party seems in danger of an early end, she suggests they each tell a ghost story. One that’s seasonally appropriate. But Ro will come to learn that the horrors hidden in a Christmas tale—or one’s past—can never be tamed once unleashed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Business people who succeed seem to do things their own way. The ones who come up short all seem to keep doing things the same way. But where does the impulse for business innovation originate? How can we create the magic link between our personal instincts and a path to entrepreneurial success? Susan Meitner, founder and CEO of the fast-growing Centennial Lending Group, answers that question in a perceptive, entertaining manner. Along with her talents for business-building and personnel management, Meitner is also a natural storyteller. In this vivid, first-hand account, she reveals how a businesswoman’s entrepreneurial path can flow naturally from her upbringing and early life experience. In other words, the person you are is the foundation for the business person you will become. Your job is to understand the quirky interplay between your strengths and weaknesses, then chart a course accordingly. The setting for Crazy Lucky Girl: Do YOU Have the Keys to Success? is the mortgage business. It’s a familiar and yet suspect sector of the U.S. economy, where the American Dream meets competitive, even sharp-elbowed market practices. Readers who have been sent into pioneer sales territory will relate to Meitner’s story of “going out on the street” after starting in the safety of the back-office processing department. Those who have seen loyalties fray and friendships crack under the pressure of human ambition and marketplace rivalry will nod at many of the stories in these pages. And certainly, anyone who has bought a home, gone through a refinance, been approved for a mortgage — or been rejected for one—will gain insight from Meitner’s explanation of what truly goes on behind the facade of the home-loan process. Looking to connect your personal style and story to a tale not yet written of entrepreneurial success? The surprising and inspiring story of Crazy Lucky Girl can be your key to making that connection.

Book excerpt: “Love and lust can arrive at the same time and often do. Things can get super confusing. As a teen, I was driven largely by lust, but I was trying to focus on true love.” Riya and Rehan didn’t care for anyone after falling in love. They were on a rollercoaster without the seatbelt. They didn’t care for highs and lows. They knew that they could be thrown out, trampled beneath the wheels or thrown up into the heavens. They loved and married against their parents’ wishes. But the real problem began after two years when Rehan admitted himself in a hospital. Riya lost Rehan and struggled a lot. But that made her know the importance of parents and the difference between love and marriage.

Book excerpt: An invaluable resource for general readers investigating climate change, this book examines the impact of climate change on popular culture and analyzes how writers and directors treat the disasters caused by climate change in their novels and films. Climate Change in Popular Culture: A Warming World in the American Imagination is the first study that includes analyses of both fiction and popular nonfiction works devoted to climate change. In addition, the book examines a number of classic works from the perspective of the growing field of climate change literature and includes a brief history of climate change science as well basic scientific definitions, all intended for general readers. The text provides an introduction to the science, politics, and economics of climate change. It also includes both historical overviews and potential probable futures projected by leading climate scientists and environmental writers. In addition, the text looks at how such creative writers and directors as Margaret Atwood, John Steinbeck, Paulo Bacigalupi, Kim Stanley Robinson, T. C. Boyle, Michael Crichton, and Octavia Butler, among others, have used the disasters caused by climate change in their work.

Book excerpt: Step one of burning a book is finding a disagreeable premise within its interior to justify the act. In order to simplify this process for the reader, each short story in this collection is followed by a precise reason the short story should be immolated, opined by the author’s many critics. "Lucky Girl Noir" is about a hard-boiled cop solving the murder of a ‘Lucky Girl’, one of many powered women born with probability consistenly in their favor. Burning this story would be a much needed win in the war against plagiarism. "Three Days West" is an acid-Western about a pair of turophile cowboys exploiting their otherworldly connection in frontier Colorado. This story deserves burning for stealing the modesty of American pulp heroes. "Zantar" is Tarzan but with aliens and raccoons. Burning seems appropriate, as it acts as a continuation of the author’s insatiable hunger for theriocide. "Sea Creatures" is a sapphic love story between a siren and a mermaid. The story deserves to be burned for suggesting bras are a form of art. "Lizard People Take Orlando" tells the story of Zaffre Davis, a young grad student running for mayor of Orlando while keeping his double life as a scalie a secret. Burning should be considered due to its depictions of the furry fandom as solely affiliating with Democrats. "The Spirit Realm" is about the survivor of a mass party poisoning who wakes up to find he can talk to and interrogate bottles of alcohol. Not a single character is represented by a bottle of absinthe; a crime best punished by burning. "The Pimp That Slapped the Ripper" is about the fall of Jack the Ripper at the hands of a violent, young procurer who will protect her property at all costs. The author’s new softness has robbed the story of certain graphic, historical details; their omission begets burning. "Washed" is the story of a man who loses all his memories when he takes a shower. Burn this one to effectively eliminate the author’s ugly, stinky past. "An American Weekend" is about a boy’s considerably awful week, and his preceding visitation by the embodiments of Friday, Saturday and Sunday; who guide him out of his funk. Turn it to ashes; this interpretation of the weekend reeks of upper-class privilege. "Roadwork" is about the daily struggles of a lemurtologist, an exorcist working for the DMV whose job is to remove ghosts from the road after a horrific accident. Tossing this story into the fire could fracture the ego of a hate-filled author obsessed with smudging the good name of the DMV.
