To satisfy the scientific curiosity, as well as to push our civilization forward by investigating new physics phenomena, we need to continue improving the devices at our disposal, including high energy particle accelerators. To pave a road for a new accelerator development, beam characterization needs to be undertaken including studies of the properties of low emittance electron beams produced by laser pulses incident onto an rf gun photocathode such as described in this book. The experimental results discussed here were carried out at the A0 photoinjector at Fermilab. Such beam studies are especially important for fixing the design of new linear colliders as well as for the development of free electron lasers.

Book excerpt: The capability of making very low-emittance electron beams of temporally short, high charge bunches has opened up exciting new possibilities in basic and applied science. Two notable applications are high energy electron-positron linear colliders for particle physics, and fourth-generation light sources consisting of linac-driven Free-Electron Lasers (FEL), both of which represent significant programmatic potential for the Laboratory in the future. The technologies contributing to low-emittance electron beams and their applications, namely precision fabrication, ultra-short pulse lasers, and RF photocathode injectors, are all areas of Lab expertise, and the work carried out under this LDRD project further expanded our core-competency in advanced concept accelerators. Furthermore, high energy accelerators have become a cornerstone of the SBSS program, as illustrated by the recent development of proton radiography as a prime technology candidate for the Advanced Hydrotest Facility (AHF), which enhanced the significance of this project all the more. This was a one-year project to both advance the technology of, and participate in the science enabled by very low-emittance electron beams. The work centered around the two themes above, namely electron-positron linear colliders, and the new fourth-generation light sources. This work built upon previous LDRD investments, and was intended to emphasize accelerator physics experiments.

Book excerpt: An electron cooler, based on an Energy Recovery Linac (ERL) is under development for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RMIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory. This will be the first electron cooler operating at high energy with bunched beams. In order to achieve sufficient cooling of the ion beams the electron have to have a charge of 5 nC and a normalized emittance less than 4 [mu]. This paper presents the progress in optimizing the injector and the emittance improvements from shaping the charge distribution in the bunch.

Book excerpt: Radiation damping and quantum excitation in an electron storage ring with a laser-electron interaction region are analyzed. Two interesting regimes and their perspectives to the generation of intense x-rays and low-emittance electron beams are investigated. In the first regime, a high-average-power laser beam inside a high-finesse resonator intersects with the electron beam every pass to produce very intense, hard x-rays. Although the transverse laser cooling effect is still weak compared with the normal synchrotron radiation damping, the increased energy spread induced by the Compton scattering stabilizes the electron beam against intrabeam scattering in a compact, low-energy ring. In the second regime, a high-peak-power laser pulse confined in the optical resonator is proposed to cool the electron beam transversely for the generation of low-emittance electron beams. The authors consider some basic optical system and storage ring requirements and discuss potential demonstration experiments at the existing accelerator facilities.

Even higher brightness could be achieved with a higher electron beam energy of 2 MeV; however, RF breakdown in the tested structures limited the beam energy to about 1 MeV. Results were also obtained for the 2.4 cell RF gun. While this gun provided a modest increase in beam energy to 1.25 MeV, the presence of undesirable quadrupole modes in the structure led to a lower beam brightness. Techniques for further improvement of the RF gun are described.

Book excerpt: The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) is an x-ray Free-Electron Laser (FEL) project presently in a commissioning phase at SLAC. We report here on very low emittance measurements made at low bunch charge, and a few femtosecond bunch length produced by the LCLS bunch compressors. Start-to-end simulations associated with these beam parameters show the possibilities of generating hundreds of GW at 1.5 Å x-ray wavelength and nearly a single longitudinally spike at 1.5 nm with 2-fs duration.

Techniques based on diffraction radiation can be used to measure the beam transverse momentum distribution and to measure the transverse spatial distribution. The radiation is intense and can be in the visible spectral region where optical diagnostic techniques can be used to maximum advantage. 4 refs. 3 figs.

Book excerpt: One component of the experimental program at the Brookhaven Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) consists of a class of experiments which will study the acceleration of electrons through micron-size structures which are exposed in coincidence to a 100 GW CO2 laser beam. These experiments require the development and control of an electron beam with geometric emittances on the order of 10−1° m-rad and intensities on the order of 106 electrons. In this paper, we describe the strategies for producing such beams and the effects of high-order aberrations. Particle tracking results are presented for the final-focus system. 9 refs., 6 figs., 2 tabs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High quality electron beams are a key tool in much of modern physics, forming the backbone of electron diffraction and microscopy, free electron lasers, and several proposed particle colliders. The quality of an electron beam in the transverse dimensions, such as its size and divergence, can be summarized in a single quantity, the emittance, which sets, among other things, the resolution of electron microscopes, the limiting power of free electron lasers, and the luminosity of colliders. The emittance of the beam is limited by the emittance at the source, thus rendering high quality electron sources critical to modern accelerators. This dissertation discusses the characterization of the quality of a specific class of electron sources, the photocathode, which utilizes laser illumination to produce the electrons, and their use in two applications: ultrafast electron diffraction and free electron lasers. In particular, this dissertation describes the successful commissioning of the first ultrafast electron diffraction apparatus to utilize low emittance photocathodes at threshold, resulting in a combination of sub-10 micron probe sizes, sub-200 fs bunch lengths, and state-of-the-art spatial resolution. Finally, this dissertation reports the benefits that low emittance photocathodes could provide to a proposed new free electron laser and shows a novel method for ensuring that low emittances at the cathode are preserved throughout the beamline.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of the 1999 ICFA workshop on the physics of high brightness beams. The workshop took a snapshot in time of a fast moving, interdisciplinary field driven by advanced applications such as high gradient, high energy physics linear colliders, high gain free electron lasers, heavy ion fusion, and transmutation of nuclear materials. While the field of high brightness beam physics has traditionally been divided into disparate electron and heavy ion communities, the workshop brought the two types of researchers together, so that a sharing of insights and methods could be achieved. Thus, this book represents a unifying step in the development of the diverse fascinating discipline of high brightness beam physics, with its challenges rooted in collective, nonlinear particle motion and ultra-high electromagnetic energy density.
