Book excerpt: Arthur Laurents's career as a playwright, screenwriter, book writer for musicals and director spanned over half a century. His first Broadway play, Home of the Brave, was produced in 1945; his last play, Come Back, Come Back, Wherever You Are, was produced in 2009 when he was ninety-one. Although he is best known for his work on the classic musicals Gypsy and West Side Story and for his screenplays for Rope, The Way We Were, and The Turning Point, Laurents is the author of seventeen full-length plays, numerous screenplays and three volumes of memoirs. Despite the length and distinction of Laurents's career, until now no one has written a full-length critical study of his work. Laurentss' name was associated with a few hit musicals and films, but his best work, the plays he wrote since 1975, are not as well known. One reason is that the economics of the American theatre have changed during the writer's lifetime and Laurents's serious plays were performed Off-Broadway or at regional theatres. Few were published, except in acting editions, until a volume of Selected Plays was assembled in 2005. Moreover, Laurents's highly controversial volumes of memoirs, filled with attacks on people who he felt betrayed him over the years, overshadowed his later work. Ignoring most his own plays in the memoirs did not help to maintain his reputation as a serious playwright This book rectifies the absence of a serious examination of all of Laurents's major work. This first comprehensive study of Laurents's work focuses on the subjects and themes that recur in his work, particularly the interrelated topics of gender politics, homosexuality and the dynamics of marriage. The position of women and gay men changed greatly over the sixty-plus years of Laurents's career and we see those changes reflected in his work, particularly in the shifting power dynamics within a marriage. Laurents was fascinated by the dynamics of marriage. In his plays there is always a tension between love and the difficulty, if not impossibility, of monogamy. In works like The Enclave, we also see a variety of ways in which gay men try to live proud lives in a heteronormative society. In that play and in Two Lives, Laurents examines how gay men negotiate something like a marriage before gay marriages were legally sanctioned. The book also covers the ways in which Laurents's plays reflect his interest in leftist politics from the 1940s through the various liberations of the late 1960s and 1970s. Above all, the study argues that if there is any common theme running through the plays, films and memoirs, it is betrayal-betrayal of marriage partner, friend, artistic collaborator and, most important, betrayal of one's own ideals. The Works of Arthur Laurents will be of particular interest to students and scholarsof American drama, musical theatre, American film, gender studies, gay studies, and Jewish studies.

Book excerpt: Love, Resistance, Betrayal is a mixture of fact and fiction, based on the true story of Gavino Luna (stage name Gavino De Lunas), a famous Sardinian poet and singer who became a war hero, fought against the regime that ruined his country and was ultimately betrayed. His heart broken, Gavino decides to enlist in the Italian army, persuading his two friends, Nigola and Martine to do the same. Although it’s 1914, and a violent war rages across Europe, Italy has chosen not to become involved. But Benito Mussolini has other ideas, plans that will change Italy forever and draw her into not one, but two World Wars. A patriotic Sardinian, Gavino decides the only way to save his country is to fight against those responsible for dragging them all into hell. As a Slovenian citizen under Austro-Hungarian control Anej has no choice but to defend the Empire from the Italians, but his fight is only just beginning. Determined his own children will grow up free and never be used in other people’s wars Anej joins the struggle for an independent country, a decision that leads to love and heartbreak. Delighted to renew his friendship with ex-lover Margherita Sarfatti, Jewish businessman Moise Pace is happy to provide financial support to her latest prodigy, Benito Mussolini, until he begins to have doubts about the direction the country is heading. As the danger from their German ally increases Moise wishes he’d made different choices. Father Ben Lawrence has no idea why God has chosen him to serve on the Western Front, but he is determined to go wherever he is needed. His faith leads him to the Vatican where he realises his purpose is to save as many people as possible from the scourge of fascism, beginning with Slovenia. Through the Great War, the turbulent decades of the 1920s and 1930s, the occupation of Slovenia and the massacre in the Ardeatine Caves on 24 March 1944, Love, Resistance, Betrayal follows the lives of several people in Sardinia, Italy, Slovenia and the Vatican. ***Contains adult content***

She loved him so intensely; now and again it seemed to injure her core to have a sinuous love as this. Being a worldly wise woman, she did not understand how she could love any man. He was an extraordinary man whose beauty comes within the center of his soul. Beautiful as could be he was the angel whom she loves so deeply. Although no one except she and he knows this to be. He was her secret mystery, her morning sun, her luminous star in twilight. He was a quiet tempest she could not resist. Dark passionate desires for him haunted her in the worst way, each and every day. Emotions stirred within her as she allowed her mind to wonder and linger. Within her private world he was her treasure, her ultimate pleasure. The love she held in her heart for him was unreasonable and complicated. Within her mind her wanton love for him was by design. A love so strong whether right or wrong, it would stay with her, waiting for the time for her to ascend. In the midst of the stars where love endlessly flows, she looks forward to the day when he will know. That the love she feels for him will last after everything else in this world has passed

Sample Book Insights: #1 The pain of intimate betrayal is real and comes from a primitive part of the brain that developed to protect us from leaving the tribe. It is highly irrational, but it is nonetheless powerful. #2 Intimate betrayal is defined as a sudden revelation or a gradual realization of your partner having lied, manipulated, stolen, or cheated. It can be difficult to deal with, as it can strike suddenly and unexpectedly, or it can be a gradual realization of your life never being the same after your partner’s betrayal. #3 betrayal and anger are typically inseparable, for a while. The reasons are more biological than psychological. Anger temporarily numb pain and provide a surge of energy to overcome perceived threat. #4 The cycle of anger and resentment that typically follows intimate betrayal is: you think about the betrayal and get angry. The anger increases your energy, confidence, and sense of power. Then the amphetamine crash happens. The loss of energy and power create a void that is soon filled by self-doubt, depressed mood, or numbness.

Book excerpt: What happens when you discover that the person you admire, love and trust most of all has secretly discredited your integrity for most of your life—even on their deathbed? Rebecca Painter’s frank, far-flung and often funny exploration of a painful mother-daughter relationship is for anyone challenged by hidden as well as open assaults on their character. To understand and heal her deep-rooted/lifelong trauma, the author transports readers across the Pacific to her mother’s youth in the outback of 1920s New Zealand, and Rachel’s fateful voyage to the Pacific Northwest in 1939. Did a telegraph error ruin her engagement to the man she called the love of her life? Why would she quickly marry an American cult leader, Rebecca’s father, whose paranormal influence lingers after his untimely death? We witness the family’s survival struggles, and Rebecca’s challenges as an outsider attending an elite women’s college—which resemble the barriers her mother faced in the British class system. Rebecca’s dream of a scholarly career is deferred, but her prayers are answered by the chance to care for and be reconciled with her dying mother. [LOVE] RACHEL speaks of believable miracles, and—despite decades of soul-wrenching negative judgments—how personal integrity can be defended and empowered from within. “A gripping, haunting journey of forgiveness. Despite her mother’s harsh judgments, Rebecca learns to love herself, have compassion for her mother...and comes to terms with their demons. Her memoir is a lyrical and intelligent page-turner and an inspiration.” —Carole Mallory, actress, supermodel, author of Picasso’s Ghost, Loving Mailer, and Flash "Rebecca Painter’s wonderful memoir examines the compelling, dramatic and puzzling events of her mother’s life, in her struggle to understand their fraught relationship.... As a daughter, I consider this to be more than just a great story. It is a truly important read about human relations.” —Miriam Katin, artist, author of award-winning illustrated memoir We Are on Our Own and Letting It Go "A daringly honest, amazing account of a complex, always fascinating relationship.” — Lee J. Strauss, author of The First Language and Toward a Biology of Culture

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Betrayal in all its forms has been and is an ever present reality in every area of life--politics, business, and human relationships to name a few. Recent publications have chronicled the unethical actions of mental health and other human service professionals, yet the psychology of betrayal has received little public interest and attention. This book explores the many issues relating to psychotherapy and betrayal. The contributing authors of Betrayal in Psychotherapy and its Antidotes present the various faces of betrayal as may be encountered by therapists in the office or in the profession. They challenge therapists to understand the violations of trust that can occur within the therapeutic relationship. Readers are reminded that the trauma of betrayal manifests itself within all patients, regardless of of the nature and expression of psychopathology. More importantly, the authors define betrayal as experienced with specific cases and they attempt to bring out underlying principles that are useful to therapists and the larger professional community. Readers will find their understanding of the concept of betrayal much expanded from the chapters in Betrayal in Psychotherapy and its Antidotes. For example, betrayal is discussed as a failure in the interpersonal or inter-subjective relationship between therapist and client in one chapter as opposed to the concept of betrayal as an act calculated to lead another person astray, an act of deception or treachery, and a breach of confidence and trust as considered in another chapter. Other approaches to betrayal and psychotherapy include: how to determine what is betrayal in psychotherapy the use of case examples to establish the importance of the therapist striving to remain true to the genuine potentiality of a patient how to avoid colluding with the patient’s rejection of life the work of Alice Miller, a psychoanalyst by training, and the betrayal of children by abuse the paradoxical nature of psychiatric practice and its necessary reliance upon moral reasoning an investigation on the link between therapists’personal maturity and the success of therapy how traditional humanistic and analytic therapies can entrap both therapist and patient into a betrayal of self and the relationship implications of the “betrayal of the feminine” in males and their work with clients in a psychotherapy setting a case portrayal of “Teddy”--the betrayal of the betrayed
