Book excerpt: These are letters by Simon Buckner Lott to his family during the 1914 meeting of the Kentucky General Assembly. His letters to his wife, Nancy, and family generally concern personal news but also include information about bills before the legislature and the agenda for their discussion. One letter, written on a copy of House Bill 308, introduced by another representative, would make it unlawful for women over the age of eighteen to wear skirts less than thirty-three inches in width in public. Fines levied against offenders were to go to the Orphan Home in Louisville. Lott wanted his wife to obtain opinions of Hancock County women on this measure. Another letter describes a final tribute to former governor Simon Bolivar Buckner (Lott's namesake), who died in January, 1914. The collection also includes one letter by Lott's wife and a family photograph.

Book Synopsis Archaeology of Identity and Dissonance by : Diane F. George
Download or read book Archaeology of Identity and Dissonance written by Diane F. George and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2019-01-21 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume demonstrates how humans adapt to new and challenging environments by building and adjusting their identities. By gathering a diverse set of case studies that draw on popular themes in contemporary historical archaeology and current trends in archaeological method and theory, it shows the many ways identity formation can be seen in the material world that humans create. The essays focus on situations across the globe where humans have experienced dissonance in the form of colonization, migration, conflict, marginalization, and other cultural encounters. Featuring a wide time span that reaches to the ancient past, examples include Roman soldiers in Britain, Vikings in Iceland and the Orkney Islands, sex workers in French colonial Algeria, Irish immigrants to the United States, an African American community in nineteenth-century New York City, and the Taino people of contemporary Puerto Rico. These studies draw on a variety of data, from excavated artifacts to landscape and architecture to archival materials. In their analyses, contributors explore multiple aspects of identity such as class, gender, race, and ethnicity, showing how these factors intersect for many of the individuals and groups studied. The questions of identity formation explored in this volume are critical to understanding the world today as humans continue to grapple with the legacies of colonialism and the realities of globalized and divided societies.

Book excerpt: When two brothers take a road trip to visit their ill father, their journey reveals, not only an unexpected friendship, but also some surprising truth It is late summer 2008 and forty-year-old Salinger Nash, who has been plagued since adolescence by a mercurial depression, leaves the north-west London house he shares with girlfriend for his older brother, Carson's home in New Orleans. It is Carson who has persuaded Salinger that they should visit their estranged father on his deathbed in Las Cruces, and use it as an opportunity to heal old wounds. However it is with a sense of foreboding that Salinger sets off with his brother on a road trip from New Orleans in Carson's prized brand new Lexus, as their relationship is far from amicable. Tender, funny, unflinching, this is a road trip story in the great American literary tradition and an exploration of sibling rivalry that harks back to Cain and Abel. It is a vivid glimpse of a country through the eyes of an outsider, a profound exploration of brotherhood and a gripping journey of the soul. 'With its tender, funny, unflinchingly exploration of sibling rivalry, this is a vivid glimpse of a country through the eyes of an outsider, a profound exploration of brotherhood and a gripping journey of the soul' - GQ 'There is a tragic rejection at the heart of the story. Lott is attempting to solve what he sees as a deep-rooted crime against humanity, excavating the blank spaces beneath the rawness of everyday life' - Independent 'Under the Same Stars, a tender-hearted novel of sibling rivalries, is no less memorable than his family memoir The Scent of Dried Roses' - Spectator

In ten intimate essays based on his own experiences and on the seasoned wisdom of writers including Eudora Welty, E. B. White, Henry David Thoreau, Henry James, and John Gardner, Lott explores such topics as • why write? why keep writing? • the importance of simple words • the finer points of character detail • narrative and the passage of time • the pitfalls of technique • making a plan–and letting it go • risking failure–and reaping the benefits • Accepting rejection Writers travel alone, but Bret Lott’s book makes the journey less lonely and infinitely more rewarding. Before We Get Started will help you make your work as good as it can be: “Pay attention recklessly. Strain to see through the window of your own artistic consciousness in the exhilarating knowledge that there is no path to the waterfall, and there are a million paths to the waterfall, and there is, too, only one path: yours.”
