This timely and relevant resource provides an opportunity for educators to facilitate young adults exploring values while developing intrapersonal and interpersonal skills. Engage students cognitively and emotionally to empower them to understand the effect of values and anti-values in relationship to the self, others, the community and the world. Eight values units take up peace, respect, love and caring, tolerance, simplicity and caring for the Earth and her oceans, honesty, happiness and responsibility, with an additional unit on substance abuse. Activities also explore the affect of values on SDGs, and teach assertive and proactive methods to deal with bullying, reflect on and create their own guidelines for involvement in social media, learn how to encourage themselves in positive ways and manage their emotions, and develop a voice and positive social skills to create inclusion and respect. Other current concerns addressed in the values lessons are depression, dealing with anxiety, helping those who are suicidal, dating violence and substance abuse. Growing from strength to strength, Living Values Education has enriched the lives and educational experience of educators and millions of young people around the world since its initial pilot in February 1997. Book excerpt: As pervasive violence shatters our nation, the call for values echoes through headlines and school hallways as educators, parents and children become increasingly concerned and affected. The Living Values series offers a variety of experiential activities for teachers and parents to help them teach children and young adults to develop twelve critical social values: cooperation, freedom, happiness, honesty, humility, love, peace, respect, responsibility, simplicity, tolerance and unity. In each book, these twelve values are explored using age-appropriate lessons that incorporate group discussions, reading, quiet reflection time, songs, artwork and action-oriented activities. These lessons are already in use in more than 1,000 locations in sixty-two countries. Pilot results indicate that students are enthusiastic and teachers report a decrease in aggressive behavior and more motivated students. The Living Values Educational Program was born when twenty educators from around the world gathered at UNICEF Headquarters in New York in 1996 to discuss the needs of children and how to better prepare students for lifelong success. These global educators identified the curriculum and the program was ready for piloting in February of 1997.

Book excerpt: "Living Values Education Activities for Children Ages 3-7, Book 1" is an updated and expanded edition of the original "Living Values Activities for Children Ages 3-7" resource. Book 1 offers a rich variety of values activities to help children explore and develop values. The eight values units of Book 1 are Peace I, Respect 1, Love and Caring, Tolerance, Honesty, Happiness, Responsibility, and Simplicity and Caring for our Earth and Her Oceans. The Living Values Education Activities in this book incorporate a variety of ways to introduce, explore and teach values. The Peace Unit begins with a commentary which encourages children to imagine what a peaceful world would be like. Art activities, playing with peace puppets and the making of a peace tent help them bring some of their ideas into life. Reflection points explain values in simple ways. Stories, songs, sharing, and teaching skills are combined with playing, art, movement and role playing. Quietly Being exercises help children learn to self-regulate and fill themselves with peace, love and respect. In this peaceful, nurturing and enjoyable approach, personal social and emotional skills develop as well as positive, constructive social skills. These values activities can be used by elementary school teachers, nursery and pre-school teachers, parents, caregivers and day-care center staff. This book reflects the experience of Living Values Education educators ... that children love to explore. They are naturally receptive, enthusiastic about learning, and spontaneously caring and creative. They thrive in a positive, nurturing, values-based atmosphere where they feel safe, and easily assimilate learning about peace, conflict resolution and the giving of respect and love. Consciously modeling peace, respect, caring and honesty, and teaching about values is increasingly important as children in today's world are exposed to violence and inappropriate models of behavior at younger and younger ages. The Living Values Education Activities books are part of the curricular resources offered by the Association of Living Values Education International. Growing from strength to strength, Living Values Education (LVE) has enriched the lives and educational experience of young people and educators around the world since its initial pilot in February 1997. A global endeavor dedicated to nurturing and educating hearts as well as minds, LVE provides an approach and tools to help people connect with their own values and "live" them. A values-based learning community fosters positive relationships, quality learning and quality education. With Living Values Education, educators and students become co-creators of a culture of peace and respect. Educators are welcome to participate in Living Values Education professional development workshops. Creating a values-based atmosphere in which young people are loved, valued, respected, understood and safe helps students "catch" the values being shared.

Book excerpt: "Living Values Education Activities for Children Ages 8-14, Book 1" is an updated and expanded edition of the original "Living Values Activities for Children Ages 8-14" resource. Book 1, and its companion volume, Book 2, offer a rich variety of values activities to help young people explore and develop values. The eight values units of Book 1 are Peace I, Respect 1, Love and Caring, Tolerance, Honesty, Happiness, Responsibility, and Simplicity and Caring for our Earth and Her Oceans. Book 2 contains an additional eight values units: Peace II, Respect II, Cooperation, Humility, Compassion, Another Value We Love, Freedom and Unity. The Living Values Activities books are part of the curricular resources offered by the Association of Living Values Education International. Educators and facilitators engage students in exploring and choosing their own personal values while developing intrapersonal and interpersonal skills to "live" those values. A values-based learning community fosters positive relationships, quality learning and quality education. With Living Values Education, educators and students become co-creators of a culture of peace and respect. A wide range of modalities and activities are utilized in the lessons. Reflection points share the importance of valuing all people, discussions help students grow in empathy, role playing builds conflict resolution skills, and a myriad of facilitated cognitive and experiential activities increase positive social and emotional skills. Reflective, imagining and artistic activities encourage students to explore their own ideas, creativity and inner gifts. Mind mapping values and anti-values builds cognitive understanding of the practical effect of values and encourages a values-based perspective for analyzing events and creating solutions. Other activities stimulate awareness of personal and social responsibility and awareness of social justice. Students are invited to fill themselves with peace, respect and love and increase their ability to focus through relaxation/focusing exercises. Educators are encouraged to utilize their own rich heritage while integrating values into everyday activities and the curriculum. Given the increasing negative influences young people are exposed and subjected to, the updated books include activities to help them understand the influences, stay safe, and increase their motivation and capacity to be a positive force for good. A few of the areas addressed are dealing with bullying in assertive and proactive ways, reflecting on and creating their own guidelines for involvement in social media, learning how to encourage themselves in positive ways and manage their emotions, be safe from being entrapped, and develop a voice and positive social skills to create inclusion and respect. Educators are welcome to participate in LVE professional development workshops. Creating a values-based atmosphere in which young people are loved, valued, respected, understood and safe helps students "catch" the values being shared. The sixteen values units in the two updated Living Values Activities books include other related universal values such as kindness, fairness, determination, integrity, appreciation, diversity, gratitude, inclusion and social justice.

Helping your children develop values such as honesty, self-reliance, and dependability is as important a part of their education as teaching them to read or how to cross the street safely. The values you teach your children are their best protection from the influences of peer pressure and the temptations of consumer culture. With their own values clearly defined, your children can make their own decisions -- rather than imitate their friends or the latest fashions. In Teaching Your Children Values Linda and Richard Eyre present a practical, proven, month-by-month program of games, family ctivities, and value-building ecercises for kids of all ages.

Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A special 25th anniversary edition of the beloved book that has changed millions of lives with the story of an unforgettable friendship, the timeless wisdom of older generations, and healing lessons on loss and grief—featuring a new afterword by the author “A wonderful book, a story of the heart told by a writer with soul.”—Los Angeles Times “The most important thing in life is to learn how to give out love, and to let it come in.” Maybe it was a grandparent, or a teacher, or a colleague. Someone older, patient and wise, who understood you when you were young and searching, helped you see the world as a more profound place, gave you sound advice to help you make your way through it. For Mitch Albom, that person was his college professor Morrie Schwartz. Maybe, like Mitch, you lost track of this mentor as you made your way, and the insights faded, and the world seemed colder. Wouldn’t you like to see that person again, ask the bigger questions that still haunt you, receive wisdom for your busy life today the way you once did when you were younger? Mitch Albom had that second chance. He rediscovered Morrie in the last months of the older man’s life. Knowing he was dying, Morrie visited with Mitch in his study every Tuesday, just as they used to back in college. Their rekindled relationship turned into one final “class”: lessons in how to live. “The truth is, Mitch,” he said, “once you learn how to die, you learn how to live.” Tuesdays with Morrie is a magical chronicle of their time together, through which Mitch shares Morrie’s lasting gift with the world.

Book excerpt: SPECIAL QUESTIONS (FOR GRADE 11, THE AGE OF DEEPENING) The book series is all about education in human sexuality, based on the nourishment and cultivation of the natural gift of a person’s character. The series is based on the premise that SEXUALITY EDUCATION is, basically, CHARACTER EDUCATION, which in turn is founded on human dignity and encompasses formation in moral standards and human conduct; hence, covering the key elements of “life and love, and everything in between”. Comprising an introductory volume for parents and teachers; a volume for classroom use of teachers; a volume for parents; and eight volumes for Grades 5 to 12, respectively, this current volume is specifically addressed to Grade 6 pupils, about 17 to 18 year olds in their late adolescence. It talks about SPECIAL QUESTIONS: on issues concerning life; sex; marriage; and human identity. Since men and women have been gifted with intellect and will, one becomes highly capable of using well or abusing these powers for the good or damage of self and fellowmen. It is thus extremely important that students at this age have a deep appreciation of the issues confronting the modern world, especially in the realm of sexuality and the channels of its development. The book series is characterized by sound, perennial concepts and by teaching and learning tools geared towards the age group being addressed.

It explores issues such as the kinds of values that are communicated between educators and children and the kind of future citizens we foster in early childhood settings. It illustrates by way of cases involving many participants, including children, educators, and researchers, who have their roots in diverse contexts, and reside in different parts of the world, including Australia, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Slovenia, and Sweden. The book carefully considers the contextualized character of the cases presented, yet argues that the questions, theories, and methodologies emphasized do inform the international debate in manifold ways. Communication of values in a broad and diverse sense is central in any pedagogy, especially for the youngest children in the educational system. Still, values education has been neglected as a research field, in education in general and particularly in the early years. This book addresses this lack of knowledge by scrutinizing various questions about values education in ECEC settings.

Book excerpt: An amazing resource, the qualities of love, peace, respect and wisdom are embedded in this book, in guidelines on encouragement, listening, peace time, Us Time, building positive behavior, developing responsibility and discipline while dealing with practical realities such as homework and how to get the kids to handle squabbles respectfully and independently. Suggestions and activities are shared to help parents help children, from toddlers to teens, use values to handle their challenges as well as to deal with bullying and prevent drug use and sexual abuse. This book is unusual not only for the variety of important topics addressed, but for its mindful approach in building healthy emotional and social skills while strengthening loving family relationships. An enjoyable read that parents will return to as a resource again and again, Diane brings guiding principles to life with stories about children, parents and educators. Eight Sections - 34 Chapters Section One: The Importance of Values Two chapters offer a brief look at the effect of values and why teaching values is not as easy as it was decades ago when being a role model and sharing stories was often sufficient. Section Two: Nurturing with Love and Wisdom Seven chapters explore the importance of enjoying play and Us Time with children of all ages, the role of love, affection and attention, the uniqueness of each child, and practical guidelines for encouragement and building positive behaviors. Stories and examples of active listening give parents a wonderful way to help children accept and process their own emotions. Creating opportunities for children to be responsible is also addressed. Section Three: Disciplining with Peace and Respect Eight chapters explore values-based methods of guiding children, beginning with a discussion of "to cane or not to cane" and the dynamics of punishment. Practical steps are offered to implement peaceful effective timeouts, help children create positive alternatives, speak so children will listen, model desired behaviors, give choices, and use logical consequences to help children accept responsibility. A discussion of values is part of a four-step correction process when young people engage in wrong behavior. Section Four: Healthy Food for the Body and Mind Two chapters offer information on simple ways to provide a healthier diet and explore the use of humanizing versus dehumanizing video games and films. Section Five: Taking Care of You - the Parent Four chapters offer suggestions and research information to parents on nourishing the body, increasing happiness and nourishing the spirit, transforming negative mental habits, and mindful ways to keep love flowing with your partner and family. Section Six: Practicalities in Everyday Life Five chapters explore situations parents may encounter, such as when a child says "I Hate You" or is disrespectful, when there is resistance to doing homework, when there's change and children feel insecure, and steps to begin repairing a relationship. The chapter on when siblings squabble and fight includes how to teach conflict resolution while incorporating peace, respect and love in the process. Section Seven: Prevention and Intervention Five chapters include suggestions and practical activities to help parents help children learn to calm down, prevent drug use, and deal with bullying and social media. A chapter on preventing sexual abuse offers suggestions to parents as well as scripted conversations to help build children's awareness and protective social skills. The last chapter in this section is a step-by-step guide for families that have had a lot of anger in the home and wish to create more peace and harmony. Section Eight: Building Blocks of Values This chapter on the process of helping children explore and develop values, ties together information from previous sections while clarifying the process of how we can help each young person move toward his or her potential.

Book excerpt: Some revision of public schooling history is necessary to challenge the dominant mythology that public schools were established on the grounds of values-neutrality. In fact, those responsible for the foundations of public education in Australia were sufficiently pragmatic to know that its success relied on its charter being in accord with public sentiment. Part of the pragmatism was in convincing those whose main experience of education had been through some form of church-based education that state-based education was capable of meeting the same ends. Hence, the documents of the 1870s and 1880s that contained the charters of the various state and territory systems witness to a breadth of vision about the scope of education. Beyond the standard goals of literacy and numeracy, education was said to be capable of assuring personal morality for each individual and a suitable citizenry for the soon-to-be new nation. As an instance, the NSW Public Instr- tion Act of 1880 (cf. NSW, 1912), under the rubric of “religious teaching”, stressed the need for students to be inculcated into the values of their society, including understanding the role that religious values had played in forming that society’s legal codes and social ethics. The notion, therefore, that public education is part of a deep and ancient heritage around values neutrality is mistaken and in need of se- ous revision. The evidence suggests that public education’s initial conception was of being the complete educator, not only of young people’s minds but of their inner character as well.
