Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian literature is not a corpus of texts or literary concepts from India, argues Preetha Mani, but a provocation that seeks to resolve the relationship between language and literature, written in as well as against English. Examining canonical Hindi and Tamil short stories from the crucial decades surrounding decolonization, Mani contends that Indian literature must be understood as indeterminate, propositional, and reflective of changing dynamics between local, regional, national, and global readerships. In The Idea of Indian Literature, she explores the paradox that a single canon can be written in multiple languages, each with their own evolving relationships to one another and to English. Hindi, representing national aspirations, and Tamil, epitomizing the secessionist propensities of the region, are conventionally viewed as poles of the multilingual continuum within Indian literature. Mani shows, however, that during the twentieth century, these literatures were coconstitutive of one another and of the idea of Indian literature itself. The writers discussed here—from short-story forefathers Premchand and Pudumaippittan to women trailblazers Mannu Bhandari and R. Chudamani—imagined a pan-Indian literature based on literary, rather than linguistic, norms, even as their aims were profoundly shaped by discussions of belonging unique to regional identity. Tracing representations of gender and the uses of genre in the shifting thematic and aesthetic practices of short vernacular prose writing, the book offers a view of the Indian literary landscape as itself a field for comparative literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Making of Indian English Literature brings together seventeen well-researched essays of Subhendu Mund with a long introduction by the author historicising the development of the Indian writing in English while exploring its identity among the many appellations tagged to it. The volume demonstrates, contrary to popular perceptions, that before the official introduction of English education in India, Indians had already tried their hands in nearly all forms of literature: poetry, fiction, drama, essay, biography, autobiography, book review, literary criticism and travel writing. Besides translation activities, Indians had also started editing and publishing periodicals in English before 1835. Through archival research the author brings to discussion a number of unknown and less discussed texts which contributed to the development of the genre. The work includes exclusive essays on such early poets and writers as Kylas Chunder Dutt, Shoshee Chunder Dutt, Toru Dutt, Mirza Moorad Alee Beg, Krupabai Satthianadhan, Swami Vivekananda, H. Dutt, and Sita Chatterjee; and historiographical studies on the various aspects of the genre. The author also examines the strategies used by the early writers to indianise the western language and the form of the novel. The present volume also demonstrates how from the very beginning Indian writing in English had a subtle nationalist agenda and created a space for protest literature. The Making of Indian English Literature will prove an invaluable addition to the studies in Indian writing in English as a source of reference and motivation for further research. Please note: Taylor & Francis does not sell or distribute the Hardback in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Criticism is an exercise of judgment and literary criticism is an exercise of judgment on a work of literature. Literary criticism interprets and evaluates a work of literature in a given context. As it is said, literary criticism is not every body’s cup of tea, it is rather difficult task. This book presents the glimpses of critical theories down from Longinus to Derrida. It also provides an account of modern trends in literary criticism. It presents the theoretical concepts of literary criticism and creative process in brief. The book covers major trends and their approaches in brief to convince the reader about the elementary aspects of existed critical theories and creativity. Here, an attempt has been made to simplify the critical theories, keeping in mind the conceptual ability of the students’ community at graduate level. No doubt the book will meet out the basic needs and urge of the students who aspire to understand literature and literary criticism. This is the result of my several years of teaching experience, particularly, the literary criticism, critical theories and creative literature. Many students of literature feel difficult to understand these critical theories at graduate level. The complexities of the students in understanding instigated me to simplify these concepts to their level of understanding. In writing this short discourse I have had the guidance of many senior teachers who are well acquainted with critical theories. Besides, I have leaned more or less heavily on ‘Contemporary Literary Theory; A Students Companion’ by N.Krishnaswamy, ‘Modern Theories of Poetic Criticism’ by R.S.Tiwary, Berely, Long’s ‘Marxism and Art; Writings in Aesthetics and Criticism’, Literary Criticism: An Introduction’ by Prof.G.B.Sajjan, I acknowledge all these writers and publishers for their explicit reference in the body of the book. I am indebted to Shri. R.V Prabhu for his DTP Work. I am grateful to my entire dear and near friends, my parents and family members, my wife Akkamahadevi and my daughter Trupti for their constant support and encouragement. -Dr.Prakash B. Teggihalli

Book excerpt: The Most Brilliant Contribution To Postcolonial Criticism Since Edward Said S Orientalism & A Masterpiece Of Calm, Well-Thought-Out, Cogent And Inspiring Analysis Jane Marcus, Cuny Graduate Center And The City University Of New York Sara Suleri S The Rhetoric Of English India Is A Powerful Challenge To The Obsession With Otherness That Is A Trademark Of Colonial Studies. Where Other Scholars Tend To Observe A Strict Separation Between Works By Western And Non-Western Writers And Between Ruling And Subject Races, Suleri Reconstructs A Narrative In Which English And Indian Idioms Play With, And Against, Each Other. By Studying A Wide Range Of Materials, From The Writings Of Burke To The Travel Logs Of Nineteenth-Century Women Such As Fanny Parkes And Harriet Tytler To The Fiction Of Kipling, Forster, Naipaul And Rushdie, Suleri Deftly Reveals The Complicity That Always Operates In Colonial Literature. In Doing So, Suleri Succeeds Not Only In Challenging The Standard Chronology Of Imperial History, But Also In Fundamentally Recasting Contemporary Discourse On The Theories Of Cultural Empowerment.

Book excerpt: Although cross-cultural encounter is often considered an economic or political matter, beauty, taste, and artistry were central to cultural exchange and political negotiation in early and nineteenth-century America. Part of a new wave of scholarship in early American studies that contextualizes American writing in Indigenous space, Literary Indians highlights the significance of Indigenous aesthetic practices to American literary production. Countering the prevailing notion of the "literary Indian" as a construct of the white American literary imagination, Angela Calcaterra reveals how Native people's pre-existing and evolving aesthetic practices influenced Anglo-American writing in precise ways. Indigenous aesthetics helped to establish borders and foster alliances that pushed against Anglo-American settlement practices and contributed to the discursive, divided, unfinished aspects of American letters. Focusing on tribal histories and Indigenous artistry, Calcaterra locates surprising connections and important distinctions between Native and Anglo-American literary aesthetics in a new history of early American encounter, identity, literature, and culture.

Book excerpt: This volume on the twelfth and thirteenth centuries starts with Vidyakara`s retrospect over anonymous poets (named ones having mostly found their places in earlier volumes). After some smaller anthologies a few novels and Mankhaka`s mythological epic we come to a historical epic. History is the most substantial source of matter for literature in the volume. That might seem to contrast with Vol. Vi, but as literature its aim is always are, not facts which narrows the gap.
