Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Limnological Aspects of Recreational Lakes" considers the many problems associated with the recreational use of lakes, reservoirs, and ponds. These standing-water bodies receive the most concentrated and varied recreational use of any waters, and provide enjoyment to the greatest number of people. Individuals using such areas soon become aware of associated biological problems and often demand remedial measures to alleviate developing nuisances or the prevention of them before they arise. This book is written for the person faced with problems of interpretation and management in dealing with the phenomena of recreational lakes. In most States, a permit or permission must be obtained from an appropriate agency prior to the institution of controls. Then controls are instituted, the recommended controlling agent and its field application must be tempered with a scientist's astute knowledge of both the problem and the ecological ramifications of a control program.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuing concern about water supply and quality, ecosystem sustainability and restoration demands that the modern approach to the management of lakes and reservoirs should be based on a sound understanding of the application of the scientific and ecological principles that underlie freshwater processes. The Lakes Handbook provides an up-to-date overview of the application of ecologically sound approaches, methods and tools using experience gained around the world for an understanding of lakes and their management. Volume one of the Handbook addresses the physical and biological aspects of lakes pertinent to lake management, emphasising those aspects particularly relevant to large, still bodies of water. Volume two then considers lake management, with particular emphasis on sustainability, restoration and rehabilitation. This handbook will be invaluable to ecologists, environmental scientists, physical geographers and hydrologists involved in limnological research, as well as advanced undergraduate and graduate students looking for authoritative reviews of the key areas of limnological study. Brings together basic science and management issues. International coverage and international authors. Reviews management issues at a level suitable for the non-expert.

Book excerpt: Lakes are among the most extensive freshwater aquatic ecosystems in the world. Their evolution results from the interactions of numerous natural and anthropogenic factors. This book includes 12 chapters and presents case studies on the impacts of changes and tectonic movements on the evolution of lake water levels (Section 1), the interactions between anthropogenic activities and the physicochemical characteristics of lakes (Section 2), and the limnological characteristics and their interactions with other components of the environment (Section 3).

Book excerpt: Lakes of New York State, Volume II: Ecology of the Lakes of Western New York intensively studies four lakes in the New York State—Chautauqua Lake, Onondaga Lake, Oneida Lake, and Irondequoit Bay. This book is divided into four chapters. Chapter 1 reviews the historical data of Oneida Lake that has a large base of 206.7 km2 and relatively shallow depth of 16.8 m. Irondequoit Bay is described in Chapter 2 as a lake with great recreational potential despite large inputs of municipal wastes to its tributary streams. Chapter 3 categorizes Chautauqua Lake as a productive fishery and recreational resource. Onondaga Lake is recognized in the last chapter as a receptacle for waste products due to man’s abusive activities on its shores. This volume provides interesting case studies for students or professionals interested in the impact of the activities of mankind on lakes.

Book excerpt: This volume contains papers presented either in oral or poster form at the international symposium `Limnology of Mountain Lakes', held at Stará Lesná (Slovakia) between 1 and 7 July 1991. Several papers covered contributions from the fields of physical and chemical limnology, palaeolimnology, zooplankton, phytoplankton and phytobenthos, and bacteria. Acidification, a process affecting water chemistry and biota of many mountain lakes in Europe was dealt with also. A series of papers on the lakes in Sumava has highlighted different aspects of these lakes, which are in the last stage of acidification. Other geographical areas covered extensively were the Tatras and the Alps.

Book excerpt: The Second International Symposium on the East African Lakes was held from 10-15 January 2000 at Club Makokola on the southern shore of Lake Malawi. The symposium was organized by the International Decade for the East African Lakes (IDEAL), a research consortium of African, European and North American scientists interested in promoting the investigations of African Great Lakes as archives of environmental and climatic dynamics. Over one hundred African, European and North American scientists with special expertise in the tropical lakes participated in the symposium which featured compelling presentations on the limnology, climatology, palaeoclimatology and biodiversity of the East African Lakes. It is their papers that comprise this book. The large lakes of East Africa are important natural resources that are heavily utilized by their bordering countries for transportation, water supply, fisheries, waste disposal, recreation and tourism. The lakes are unique in many ways: they are sensitive to climatic change and their circulation dynamics, water-column chemistry and biological complexity differ significantly from large lakes at higher latitudes; they have long, continuous, high resolution records of past climatic change; and they have rich and diverse populations of endemic organisms. These unique properties and the significance of the palaeolimnological records demand and attract research interest from around the world.
