Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This contributed volume is the first in-depth analysis of the health policies of populist radical right (PRR) parties worldwide and their actual involvement in health care. The prominence of authoritarian, nationalistic, and populist parties is expanding steadily. However, it is often difficult to discern what kind of policies they really stand for, particularly with regard to the welfare state and public health, where research remains sparse. This book fills this critical gap. The text connects PRR parties and leaders with actual health and social policy effects in Eastern and Western Europe as well as in the United States, Brazil, and the Philippines. The chapters highlight ten individual country case studies authored by young scholars and professors with political science and health experts: The Austrian Freedom Party in Government: A Threat to Public Health? The Alternative for Germany (AfD) and Health Policy: Normalization or Containment of Populist Radical Right Tendencies? Populist Radical Right Influence on Health Policy in the Netherlands: The Case of the Party for Freedom (PVV) The Evolution of the Populist Radical Right and Their Impact on Health in Italy The Populist Radical Right and Health in Hungary Is the Polish 'Law and Justice' (PiS) a Typical Populist Radical Right Party? A Health Policy Perspective The Case of the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) Rhetoric and Reality in the United States of America: Trump, Populism, and Health Policy Ruling Through Chaos in Brazil: Bolsonaro's Authoritarian Agenda for Public Health An Authoritarian Reaction to COVID-19 in the Philippines: A Strong Commitment to Universal Health Care Combined with Violent Securitization The Populist Radical Right and Health is exceptionally timely and essential reading for political science and health colleagues researching and writing about PRR parties and leaders; students and faculty in public health, health and social policy, and political science; and anyone interested in learning more about this topic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many African countries are caught up in perennial or recurrent political conflicts that often culminate in devastating wars. These flaring conflicts and wars create harrowing economic hardships, dire refugee problems, and sustain a sense of despair in such countries. By their nature, these conflicts and wars affect writers in profound and sometimes paradoxical ways. On the one hand, literature-whether fiction, poetry, drama, or even memoirs-is animated by conflict. On the other hand, the sense of dislocation as well as the humanitarian crises unleashed by wars and other kinds of conflicts also constitute grave impediments to artistic exploration and literary expression. Writers and artists are frequently in the frontline of resistance to the kinds of injustices and abuses that precipitate wars and conflicts. Consequently, they are often detained, exiled, and even killed either by agents of state terror or by one faction or another in the tussle for state control. Writers, Writing Conflicts and Wars in Africa is a collection of testimonies by various writers and scholars who have experienced, or explored, the continent's conflicts and woes, including how the disruptions shape artistic and literary production. The book is divided into two broad categories: in one, several writers speak directly, and with rich anecdotal details about the impact wars and conflicts have had in the formation of their experience and work; in the second, a number of scholars articulate how particular writers have assimilated the horrors of wars and conflicts in their literary creations. The result is an invaluable harvest of reflections and perspectives that open the window into an essential, but until now sadly unexplored, facet of the cultural and political experience of African writers. The broad scope of this collection-covering Darfur, the Congolese crisis, Biafra, Zimbabwe, South Africa, among others-is complemented by a certain buoyancy of spirit that runs through most of the essays and anecdotes. _______________________ * Okey Ndibe teaches fiction and literature at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. He has also taught at Connecticut College in New London, Connecticut as well as Simon's Rock College in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. He was for one year on the editorial board of the Hartford Courant and, from 2001-2002, was a Fulbright professor at the University of Lagos, Nigeria. * Chenjerai Hove is an award-winning Zimbabwean novelist, poet, essayist and journalist whose work has been translated into numerous languages. Educated in Zimbabwe and South Africa, Hove's publications include the novels Bones (winner of the prestigious Noma Award, Baobab Books, Harare, and Heinemann, England, 1988), Shadows (Baobab and Heinemann, 1988), and Ancestors (Macmillan/Picador, England, 1996); such poetry collections as Up In Arms (Zimbabwe Publishing House, 1982), Blind Moon (Weaver Press, Harare, 2003), and Red Hills of Home (Mambo Press, Gweru, 1984). He is also the author of the collection of essays Shebeen Tales (Baobab Books, Harare, and Serif, London, 1994). Hove, who has published several volumes in his indigenous language of Shona, has worked as a columnist, translator, editor and lecturer in Zimbabwe and numerous other countries. Currently on exile in Norway, he has lived and taught in Kenya, the Netherlands, Germany, England, Switzerland, France, and the United States. He recently completed the translation of Shakespeare's King Lear into Shona.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does Israel want from Europe and why? How does Israel pursue its goals? And, who are the relevant actors? This dissertation establishes what has been governing Israel's attitudes and behavior towards the EC/EU since the late 1980s. The end of the Cold War, the reversal of Israel's peace process policy under Rabin, and changes of government certainly have had an impact on Israel's behavior. But could the changes in behavior be due to the changes in circumstances and not to a change in the substance of Israel's attitude? As the analysis shows, Israel's European policy is astonishingly autonomous. It is also, almost exclusively, day-to-day politics. This study offers an insight into the workings of low politics of second or third priority, a view that is far from rare, but rarely taken. It also sheds light on the behavior of a state at the inferior end of an asymmetry of power: How does Israel cope when dealing with a vastly larger and more powerful actor, like the EU? Special attention is paid to Israel's self-perception and its understanding of Europe and of the EU's positions. The book also looks at misperceptions and policy failures that may result from these. Dissertation.
