Book Synopsis Church-State Relations in Africa in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries by : Jairzinho Lopes Pereira
Download or read book Church-State Relations in Africa in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries written by Jairzinho Lopes Pereira and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-08-26 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection examines church-state relations in the European colonies in Africa during the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The chapters focus on the period stretching from the most agitated stages of the ‘scramble for Africa’ during the 1870s and 1880s, to the great wave of independence of African colonies in the 1950s and 60s, and culminates in a discussion of colonial legacies during its aftermath. The Church and the State, although often having conflicting goals and agendas, walked hand-in-hand throughout the entire colonial period, with ‘imperialism of the spirit’ being inconceivable without the groundwork of Catholic missionaries. Exploring the major domains that determined the course of church-state relations in the colonies, the authors analyse relations between the Holy See and the colonial powers, and between national Catholic authorities and secular authorities, as well as the international order and socio-political developments in the metropoles. They argue that interactions between state and church in Africa’s European colonies were contingent upon the complex dynamics of interests that both secular and ecclesiastical entities endeavoured to preserve or promote. With a particular focus on the Belgian and Portuguese colonies in Africa, this book provides useful reading for scholars of European imperial history and ecclesiastical history.

Book Synopsis L'église catholique comme instance critique du régime mobutu by : Clément Makiobo-Ma-Lelo
Download or read book L'église catholique comme instance critique du régime mobutu written by Clément Makiobo-Ma-Lelo and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Earthly Mission by : Robert Calderisi
Download or read book Earthly Mission written by Robert Calderisi and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With 1.2 billion members, the Catholic Church is the world's largest organization and perhaps its most controversial. The Church's obstinacy on matters like clerical celibacy, the role of women, birth control, and the child abuse scandal has alienated many Catholics, especially in the West. Yet in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, the Church is highly esteemed for its support of education, health, and social justice. In this deeply informed book, Robert Calderisi unravels the paradoxes of the Catholic Church's role in the developing world over the past 60 years. Has the Catholic Church on balance been a force for good? Calderisi weighs the Church's various missteps and poor decisions against its positive contributions, looking back as far as the Spanish Conquest in Latin America and the arrival of missionaries in Africa and Asia. He also looks forward, highlighting difficult issues that threaten to disrupt the Church's future social role. The author's answer to the question he poses will fascinate Catholic and non-Catholic readers alike, providing a wealth of insights into international affairs, development economics, humanitarian concerns, history, and theology.

Download or read book Culture et foi dans la théologie africaine written by Marco Moerschbacher and published by KARTHALA Editions. This book was released on 2014 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
