Book Synopsis Elemental Discourses by : John Sallis
Download or read book Elemental Discourses written by John Sallis and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-28 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A remarkable collection of essays that serve as a rewarding introduction to the more mature thought of Sallis . . . a feast of discourse.” —Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews John Sallis’s thought is oriented to two overarching tasks: to bring to light the elemental in nature and to show how the imagination operates at the very center of human experience. He undertakes these tasks by analyzing a broad range of phenomena, including perception, the body, the natural world, art, space, and the cosmos. In every case, Sallis develops an original form of discourse attuned to the specific phenomenon and enacts a thorough reflection on discourse itself in its relation to voice, dialogue, poetry, and translation. Sallis’s systematic investigations are complemented by his extensive interpretations of canonical figures in the history of philosophy such as Plato, Aristotle, Kant, Schelling, and Hegel and by his engagement with the most original thinkers in the areas of phenomenology, hermeneutics, and deconstruction.

Book Synopsis Discourse and Truth and Parresia by : Michel Foucault
Download or read book Discourse and Truth and Parresia written by Michel Foucault and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2019-07-19 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An invaluable book” of late-career lectures that reveal Foucault’s perspective on truth, truth-telling, and the nature of discourse (Choice). This volume collects a series of lectures given by the renowned French thinker Michel Foucault. The first part presents a talk, Parresia, delivered at the University of Grenoble in 1982. The second presents a series of lectures entitled “Discourse and Truth,” given at the University of California, Berkeley in 1983, which appears here for the first time in its full and correct form. Together, these lectures provide an unprecedented account of Foucault’s reading of the Greek concept of parresia, often translated as “truth-telling” or “frank speech.” The lectures trace the transformation of this concept across Greek, Roman, and early Christian thought, from its origins in pre-Socratic Greece to its role as a central element of the relationship between teacher and student. In mapping the concept’s history, Foucault’s concern is not to advocate for free speech; rather, his aim is to explore the moral and political position one must occupy in order to take the risk to speak truthfully. These lectures—carefully edited and including notes and introductory material to fully illuminate Foucault’s insights—are a major addition to Foucault’s English language corpus.

Book Synopsis Discourses in Action by : Klaus Krippendorff
Download or read book Discourses in Action written by Klaus Krippendorff and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-01-20 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary collection brings together leading and emerging scholars of discourse, conceptualizing how discursive practices shape social, political, and even material realities today. Discourses in Action presents a wide range of essays that explore fundamental concerns for the social consequences of text, talk, and discursively informed actions and possibilities of discursive engagement. It opens new perspectives on what language does and the differences that scholarly and practical contributions can make. Chapters cover diverse topics, ranging from political struggles, climate change, social revolutions, ethnicity, violence and other often unexpected patterns of discursive consequences. Its essays also explore the cultural contingencies that underlie discourse practices which are usually ignored when analysed from within a taken-for-granted culture. Providing a useful examination of current discourse studies, this interdisciplinary volume is ideal for students and researchers within media, communication, discourse analysis, linguistics, cultural studies, and the sociology of knowledge.

Book Synopsis Patterns, Meaningful Units and Specialized Discourses by : Ute Römer
Download or read book Patterns, Meaningful Units and Specialized Discourses written by Ute Römer and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2010-06-30 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of papers explores some facets in the areas of Corpus Linguistics and Phraseology which have gone unnoticed so far. With the aid of a range of different corpora and new-generation software tools, the authors tackle specialized domains and discourse in specialized settings, utilizing some innovative approaches to the study of recurrent features and patterns in the languages of economics, history, linguistics, politics, and other fields. The papers critically examine contemporary discourses in which experts and laypersons are equally involved, showing that the spoken and written texts, selected from various specialized corpora, can be seen as collective memory banks. The series of reflections and specialized meanings uncovered in these texts are closely tied to particular sequences of patterned chunks in language and offer exciting insights into the inseparability of lexis and grammar. The contributions to this volume were previously published in International Journal of Corpus Linguistics 13:3 (2008).

Book Synopsis Discourse Pragmatics and the Verb by : Suzanne Fleischman
Download or read book Discourse Pragmatics and the Verb written by Suzanne Fleischman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-11-18 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1990, this collection investigates grammatical categories associated with the verb as they are used by speakers and writers in real discourses and texts. Focusing on tense, aspect, mood, and voice in French, Spanish, and Italian, each chapter underscores the importance of context in our understanding of how grammatical categories work. Above and beyond their basic ‘grammatical functions’, categories of the verb are shown to operate in such capacities as structuring information in discourse, establishing point of view in a text, and creating textual cohesion. Importantly, this volume reflects the crucial role discourse-pragmatics factors play in our interpretation of the meanings of categories of grammar.

Book Synopsis The Function of Discourse Particles by : Maj-Britt Mosegaard Hansen
Download or read book The Function of Discourse Particles written by Maj-Britt Mosegaard Hansen and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1998 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph aims to contribute to linguistic knowledge about the distribution and function of discourse particles, particularly with respect to a small group of particles which are highly frequent in contemporary spoken standard French. The book is divided into two parts. Part 1 (Theory) defines discourse particles as such, and gives a dynamic global approach to their description. Matters such as previous research on discourse particles, related categories of particles, instructional semantics, the difference between speech and writing, the delimitation of discourse units, competing approaches to discourse structure and to coherence, and methodology are discussed extensively. Part 2 (Description) offers in-depth corpus-based analyses of six French discourse particles, namely bon, ben, eh bien, puis, donc, and alors, as used in non-elicted native-speaker interaction. The book is of interest to linguists doing research in semantics, pragmatics and discourse studies.
