Book Synopsis The Sacred Table by : Mary L. Zamore
Download or read book The Sacred Table written by Mary L. Zamore and published by CCAR Press. This book was released on 2011-02-28 with total page 701 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sacred Table: Creating a Jewish Food Ethic is an anthology of diverse essays on Jewish dietary practices. This volume presents the challenge of navigating through choices about eating, while seeking to create a rich dialogue about the intersection of Judaism and food. The definition of Kashrut, the historic Jewish approach to eating, is explored, broadened and in some cases, argued with, in these essays. Kashrut is viewed not only as a ritual practice, but also as a multifaceted Jewish relationship with food and its production, integrating values such as ethics, community, and spirituality into our dietary practice. The questions considered in The Sacred Table are broad reaching. Does Kashrut represent a facade of religiosity, hiding immorality and abuse, or is it, in its purest form, a summons to raise the ethical standards of food production? How does Kashrut enrich spiritual practice by teaching intentionality and gratitude? Can paying attention to our own eating practices raise our awareness of the hungry? Can Kashrut inspire us to eat healthfully? Can these laws draw us around the same table, thus creating community? In exploring the complexities of these questions, this book includes topics such as agricultural workers' rights, animal rights, food production, the environment, personal health, the spirituality of eating and fasting, and the challenges of eating together. The Sacred Table celebrates the ideology of educated choice. The essays present a diverse range of voices, opinions, and options, highlighting the Jewish values that shape our food ethics. Whether for the individual, family, or community, this book supplies the basic how-tos of creating a meaningful Jewish food ethic and incorporating these choices into our personal and communal religious practices. These resources will be helpful if we are new to these ideas or if we are teaching or counseling others. Picture a beautiful buffet of choices from which you can shape your personal Kashrut. Read, educate yourself, build on those practices that you already follow, and eat well. Published by CCAR Press, a division of the Central Conference of American Rabbis
Book Synopsis A Jew to the Jews by : David J. Rudolph
Download or read book A Jew to the Jews written by David J. Rudolph and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2011 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Rudolph's primary aim is to demonstrate that scholars overstate their case when they maintain that 1 Cor 9:19-23 is incompatible with a Torah-observant Paul. A secondary aim is to show how one might understand 1 Cor 9:19-23 as the discourse of a Jew who remained within the bounds of pluriform Second Temple Judaism. Part I addresses the intertextual, contextual and textual case for the traditional reading of 1 Cor 9:19-23. Weaknesses are pointed out and alternative approaches are considered. The exegetical case in Part II centres on interpreting 1 Cor 9:19-23 in light of Paul's recapitulation in 1 Cor 10:32-11:1, which concludes with the statement, Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ. Given the food-related and hospitality context of 1 Cor 8-10, and Paul's reference to dominical sayings that point back to Jesus' example and rule of adaptation, it is argued that 1 Cor 9:19-23 reflects Paul's imitation of Jesus' accommodation-oriented table-fellowship with all. As Jesus became all things to all people through eating with ordinary Jews, Pharisees and sinners, Paul became all things to all people through eating with ordinary Jews, strict Jews (those under the law) and Gentile sinners. This Cambridge University dissertation won the 2007 Franz Delitzsch Prize from the Freie Theologische Akademie.

You will learn about the three principles of lust, and how to tap into them to keep the flames burning in the family hearth. Finally, you will discover the incredible emotional and spiritual potential of the intimate marital bond. Book Synopsis The Rabbi's Cholent by : Norbert Weinberg
Download or read book The Rabbi's Cholent written by Norbert Weinberg and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-08-27 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An old maxim states that a rabbi delivers three sermons every Shabbat morning. The first is the one he prepares. The second is the one he delivers, followed by the third which is the one he wishes he would have delivered. The bulk of this book is inspired by the third part of this adage. There are so many ideas, concepts and even proverbs which the author was eager to share with his congregants, students and friends. However, people’s lives are busy and few opportunities present themselves to express favorite and cherished perceptions and ideas. Since Rabbi Weinberg’s hobby is to cook, bake and putter in the kitchen, the thought struck him that an in-tellectual/spiritual “cholent recipe” encapsulated in the pages of a book might give him and his readers an enriching experience. The themes are eclectic and run a free course. They are culled from study, experience and much of what has been heard and observed. The reader is invited to enter this charming world of thought, hypo-thesis and speculation. Each essay will doubtless trigger many personal thoughts and experiences in its wake.

Book Synopsis Bloody Foreigners by : Robert Winder
Download or read book Bloody Foreigners written by Robert Winder and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2010-11-04 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immigration is one of the most important stories of modern British life, yet it has been happening since Caesar first landed in 53 BC. Ever since the first Roman, Saxon, Jute and Dane leaped off a boat we have been a mongrel nation. Our roots are a tangled web. From Huguenot weavers fleeing French Catholic persecution in the 18th century to South African dentists to Indian shopkeepers; from Jews in York in the 12th century (who had to wear a yellow star to distinguish them and who were shamefully expelled by Edward I in 1272) to the Jamaican who came on board the Windrush in 1947. The first Indian MP was elected in 1892, Walter Tull, the first black football player played (for Spurs and Northampton) before WW1 (and died heroically fighting for the allies in the last months of the war); in 1768 there were 20,000 black people in London (out of a population of 600,000 - a similar percentage to today). The 19th century brought huge numbers of Italians, Irish, Jews (from Russia and Poland mainly), Germans and Poles. This book draws all their stories together in a compelling narrative.
