Viele denken, dass es in Deutschland, einem Sozialstaat, nicht zu Problemen mit Armut kommen kann. Jeder kann schließlich Hilfe vom Staat in Anspruch nehmen, hat Anspruch auf eine Wohnung und vor allem auf Sozialhilfe. Auch durch weitere staatliche Unterstützungsleistungen, wie z.B. das Bafög sollten theoretisch für jeden die gleichen Entwicklungschancen bestehen. Doch unter den Begriff der Armut fällt nicht nur die absolute Armut, sondern auch die relative Armut, die auch in Deutschland zu finden ist. An der ungleichen Einkommensverteilung leiden besonders Kinder und Jugendliche aus weniger privilegierten Familien. Diese Form der Armut hat unmittelbare Auswirkungen auf ihre Bildungschancen. Wie aktuell dieses Thema ist, zeigen nicht nur der Armuts- und Reichtumsbericht der Bundesregierung, sondern auch die aktuellen Berichterstattungen über die Probleme in den sozialen Brennpunkten, über die Ergebnisse der Pisastudie oder auch über den Protest gegen die Studiengebühren. In der Forschung der letzten Jahrzehnte zu Armut und Unterversorgung standen Kinder und Jugendliche als Angehörige von Haushalten eher am Rande als im Zentrum der Forschung. In den letzten Jahren dagegen wurde ihr Status als Subjekt berücksichtigt und das Ausmaß des Problems der Kinder und Jugendarmut wurde in den Vordergrund gestellt. Auch das Forschungsprojekt der Arbeiterwohlfahrt (AWO) befasste sich intensiv mit diesem Thema und lieferte interessante und alarmierende Ergebnisse. Auch die Armutsberichte aus den einzelnen Städten, Gemeinden und Bundesländern belegen inzwischen, dass sich Armut und Reichtum in unserem Land weiter polarisieren. In dieser Arbeit soll geprüft werden, inwieweit Kinder und Jugendlich aus ärmeren Familien bezüglich ihrer Bildungschancen benachteiligt sind und wo die Gründe dafür liegen könnten. Dazu wird zunächst der Begriff der Armut geklärt und der Frage nachgegangen welche Form der Armut in der Bundesrepublik ein Problem darstellt. Um mich dem Thema weiter anzunähern, folgt darauf eine Analyse der Gruppen, die von dem Risiko der Armut am stärksten betroffen sind. An dieser Stelle wird sich zeigen, wie groß das Ausmaß der Kinder- und Jugendarmut in der Bundesrepublik tatsächlich ist. Daran anschließend werden die eingeschränkten Bildungsmöglichkeiten der von Armut betroffenen Kinder und Jugendlichen analysiert.
