Book excerpt: This book introduces key concepts in graph theory, which is considered to be a crucial analytical tool in computer science and mathematics. Due to the built-in simplicity of graph theory, it can be employed to model several distinct physical and abstract systems like transportation and communication networks, models for business administration, psychology, and political science and so on. The aim of this book is not just to describe the present state and development tendencies of this theory, but to educate the reader enough to enable him/her to embark on the research complications of their own. Taking into consideration the huge amount of knowledge regarding graph theory and its practice, this book focuses on the applications of graph theory in future electric networks, power systems, algorithms and communication networks. This book intends to serve as a valuable source of reference for students associated with various fields like system sciences, engineering, social sciences, mathematics, computer sciences, etc. as well as for practitioners and software professionals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is for math and computer science majors, for students and representatives of many other disciplines (like bioinformatics, for example) taking courses in graph theory, discrete mathematics, data structures, algorithms. It is also for anyone who wants to understand the basics of graph theory, or just is curious. No previous knowledge in graph theory or any other significant mathematics is required. The very basic facts from set theory, proof techniques and algorithms are sufficient to understand it; but even those are explained in the text. Structurally, the text is divided into two parts where Part II is the generalisation of Part I. The first part discusses the key concepts of graph theory with emphasis on trees, bipartite graphs, cycles, chordal graphs, planar graphs and graph colouring. The second part considers generalisations of Part I and discusses hypertrees, bipartite hypergraphs, hypercycles, chordal hypergraphs, planar hypergraphs and hypergraph colouring. There is an interaction between the parts and within the parts to show how ideas of generalisations work. The main point is to exhibit the ways of generalisations and interactions of mathematical concepts from the very simple to the most advanced. One of the features of this text is the duality of hypergraphs. This fundamental concept is missing in graph theory (and in its introductory teaching) because dual graphs are not properly graphs, they are hypergraphs. However, as Part II shows, the duality is a very powerful tool in understanding, simplifying and unifying many combinatorial relations; it is basically a look at the same structure from the opposite (vertices versus edges) point of view.

Book excerpt: Graph Theory is an important area of contemporary mathematics with many applications in computer science, genetics, chemistry, engineering, industry, business and in social sciences. It is a young science invented and developing for solving challenging problems of 'computerised' society for which traditional areas of mathematics such as algebra or calculus are powerless. This book is for math and computer science majors, for students and representatives of many other disciplines (like bioinformatics, for example) taking the courses in graph theory, discrete mathematics, data structures, algorithms. It is also for anyone who wants to understand the basics of graph theory, or just is curious. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of its wide applicability, graph theory is one of the fast-growing areas of modern mathematics. Graphs arise as mathematical models in areas as diverse as management science, chemistry, resource planning, and computing. Moreover, the theory of graphs provides a spectrum of methods of proof and is a good train ing ground for pure mathematics. Thus, many colleges and universities provide a first course in graph theory that is intended primarily for mathematics majors but accessible to other students at the senior Ievel. This text is intended for such a course. I have presented this course many times. Over the years classes have included mainly mathematics and computer science majors, but there have been several engineers and occasional psychologists as weil. Often undergraduate and graduate students are in the same dass. Many instructors will no doubt find themselves with similar mixed groups. lt is to be expected that anyone enrolling in a senior Ievel mathematics course will be comfortable with mathematical ideas and notation. In particular, I assume the reader is familiar with the basic concepts of set theory, has seen mathematical induction, and has a passing acquaintance with matrices and algebra. However, one cannot assume that the students in a first graph theory course will have a good knowledge of any specific advanced area. My reaction to this is to avoid too many specific prerequisites. The main requirement, namely a little mathematical maturity, may have been acquired in a variety of ways.

How does gossip spread so quickly? Are we all related through six degrees of separation? There is a growing awareness of the complex networks that pervade modern society. We see them in the rapid growth of the internet, the ease of global communication, the swift spread of news and information, and in the way epidemics and financial crises develop with startling speed and intensity. This introductory book on the new science of networks takes an interdisciplinary approach, using economics, sociology, computing, information science and applied mathematics to address fundamental questions about the links that connect us, and the ways that our decisions can have consequences for others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is designed to be an in-depth introduction to domination in graphs. It focuses on three core concepts: domination, total domination, and independent domination. It contains major results on these foundational domination numbers, including a wide variety of in-depth proofs of selected results providing the reader with a toolbox of proof techniques used in domination theory. Additionally, the book is intended as an invaluable reference resource for a variety of readerships, namely, established researchers in the field of domination who want an updated, comprehensive coverage of domination theory; next, researchers in graph theory who wish to become acquainted with newer topics in domination, along with major developments in the field and some of the proof techniques used; and, graduate students with interests in graph theory, who might find the theory and many real-world applications of domination of interest for masters and doctoral thesis topics. The focused coverage also provides a good basis for seminars in domination theory or domination algorithms and complexity. The authors set out to provide the community with an updated and comprehensive treatment on the major topics in domination in graphs. And by Jove, they’ve done it! In recent years, the authors have curated and published two contributed volumes: Topics in Domination in Graphs, © 2020 and Structures of Domination in Graphs, © 2021. This book rounds out the coverage entirely. The reader is assumed to be acquainted with the basic concepts of graph theory and has had some exposure to graph theory at an introductory level. As graph theory terminology sometimes varies, a glossary of terms and notation is provided at the end of the book.

Book excerpt: For junior- to senior-level courses in Graph Theory taken by majors in Mathematics, Computer Science, or Engineering or for beginning-level graduate courses. Once considered an "unimportant" branch of topology, graph theory has come into its own through many important contributions to a wide range of fields -- and is now one of the fastest-growing areas in discrete mathematics and computer science. This new text introduces basic concepts, definitions, theorems, and examples from graph theory. The authors present a collection of interesting results from mathematics that involve key concepts and proof techniques; cover design and analysis of computer algorithms for solving problems in graph theory; and discuss applications of graph theory to the sciences. It is mathematically rigorous, but also practical, intuitive, and algorithmic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graph-structured data is ubiquitous throughout the natural and social sciences, from telecommunication networks to quantum chemistry. Building relational inductive biases into deep learning architectures is crucial for creating systems that can learn, reason, and generalize from this kind of data. Recent years have seen a surge in research on graph representation learning, including techniques for deep graph embeddings, generalizations of convolutional neural networks to graph-structured data, and neural message-passing approaches inspired by belief propagation. These advances in graph representation learning have led to new state-of-the-art results in numerous domains, including chemical synthesis, 3D vision, recommender systems, question answering, and social network analysis. This book provides a synthesis and overview of graph representation learning. It begins with a discussion of the goals of graph representation learning as well as key methodological foundations in graph theory and network analysis. Following this, the book introduces and reviews methods for learning node embeddings, including random-walk-based methods and applications to knowledge graphs. It then provides a technical synthesis and introduction to the highly successful graph neural network (GNN) formalism, which has become a dominant and fast-growing paradigm for deep learning with graph data. The book concludes with a synthesis of recent advancements in deep generative models for graphs—a nascent but quickly growing subset of graph representation learning.
