Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the Cork Historical Archological Society, Vol. 10: Second Series; 1904 These latter documents, it will be noticed, refer to a time later than the Tudor period; but they represent a settlement made'at the close of that period, and are especially valuable as illustrating the process by which an Irish country was transformed into part of an English shire, and an independent native chief into a great landowner, much restricted as to his old prerogatives, but fully secured in those rights that Were left to him. For the actual Tudor period the note in the Carew Calendar will suffice. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis British Supporters of the American Revolution, 1775-1783 by : Sheldon Samuel Cohen
Download or read book British Supporters of the American Revolution, 1775-1783 written by Sheldon Samuel Cohen and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's Declaration of Independence, while endeavouring to justify a break with Great Britain, simultaneously proclaimed that the colonists had not been `wanting in attention to our British brethren', but that they had `been deaf to the voice of justice and consanguinity'. This overstatement has since been modified in comprehensive histories of the American Revolution. Gradually a more balanced portrait of British attitudes towards the conflict has emerged. In particular, studies of pro-American Britons have exemplified this fact by concentrating on only a small upper-class minority. In contrast, this work focuses on five unrenowned men of Britain's `middling orders'. These individuals actively endeavoured to aid the American cause. Their efforts, often unlawful, brought them into contact with Benjamin Franklin, for whom they befriended rebel seamen confined in British gaols. Their stories - rendered here - open up new areas for study of the American War on this middling segment of Britain's social structure.
Book Synopsis The Post Office in Ireland by : Stephen Ferguson
Download or read book The Post Office in Ireland written by Stephen Ferguson and published by Merrion Press. This book was released on 2018-07-26 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first complete history of the Irish Post Office, an institution which has been at the heart of Irish life for over 300 years. It tells the story of how a small letter office grew into one of the greatest departments of State, influencing developments in areas of life which ranged from transport and communications to economics, technology and national identity. From the early days of postboys and packet ships to the introduction of the telegraph and telephone, the Post Office has played a vital role in communications, delivering mail to all parts of the island, maintaining precious links between Ireland and its emigrants, and representing, through the friendly face of a local postman or postmistress, an approachable facet of Government. Always a commercial enterprise as well as a public service, the Post Office has had to deal with the tensions that arise in that relationship and which today pose particularly serious challenges. At the heart of the book are the men and women whose fascinating stories and sympathetic characters have moulded the shape of the department and ensured its survival in the face of personal turmoil, rebellion and political intrigue. Drawing on much unpublished material, The Post Office in Ireland: An Illustrated History reveals an organisation that has been quietly influential in the development of Irish society and pays tribute to those who have faithfully served it. From letters and telegrams, to railways, radio and the GPO itself – this history of the Irish Post Office tells the story of our nation and its people in a unique and accessible way.
