Book Synopsis Proceedings in Echo-Encephalography by : E. Kazner
Download or read book Proceedings in Echo-Encephalography written by E. Kazner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The investigation of the brain by means of ultrasound has acquired increasing importance in the last years because it permits insight into the spatial relationships within the intact human skull in a short time without endangering the patient. The road from the first ultra sonic investigations on the exposed brain to the detection of intracranial midline shifts on the intact skull, the registration of echo pulsations and recently, to ultrasonotomography has been a long one already. However, this development is by no means at an end. Following the suggestion of numerous colleagues concerned with echo-encephalography in this country and abroad, the Neurosurgical Clinic of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg organized an "International Symposium on Echo-Encephalography" on April 14th and 15th, 1967. Here there was an open exchange of experience on the results obtained up to the present. The limitations of the method and sources of error as well as the directions of future development of the ultrasonic echo procedure were discussed.
Download or read book Japan written by Lucien Ellington and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-03-30 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A valuable addition to ABC-CLIO's Global Studies series, this resource covers Japan in two main sections—a narrative history and an extensive general reference section. Japan: A Global Studies Handbook offers a friendly introduction to this vital, ancient country. In a series of practical, readable essays, this title explores Japan's island geography and its influence on the nation's history. Japan traces the "economic miracle" that was born in the ashes of World War II and grew into an economy seven times the size of China's—but at considerable social cost. It examines Japan's vibrant cultural traditions—from the 11th century's The Tale of Genji to karaoke, sushi, and the "salary man." Japan entices readers to continue their exploration by offering an inviting collection of jumping-off points: a timeline of Japanese history; a mini-encyclopedia of significant people, places, and events; and an annotated bibliography covering all aspects of Japanese society.

Download or read book Japan's Asia Policy written by Wolf Mendl and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a timely and expert analysis of Japan's Asia policy as the country continues to address the future through trying to cope with the burden of a chequered past. Dr Mendl locates his expostion of Japan's policy towards both North-East and South-East Asia in a full historical and cultural context and importantly takes due account of the underlying and potent factor of national identity in shaping international outlook. He begins his study with a discussion of the enigma of Japanese policy expressed in debate over whether or not that policy expresses a calculated grand design. A corresponding enigma emerges in Dr Mendl's exposition of Japan's policy towards a part of the world with which it shares a geographical location and a measure of identity but one which, he maintains, cannot be separated from its engagement at the global level. In exploring the theme of how Japan is confronted by the problem of reconcling its relations with Asia with pursuing a global role in unchartered post-Cold War waters, Dr.Mendl makes a lucid and scholarly contribution to the debate about Japan's place in a world which it has helped to shape through its economic performance and example.
Book Synopsis Languages and Identities in a Transitional Japan by : Ikuko Nakane
Download or read book Languages and Identities in a Transitional Japan written by Ikuko Nakane and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-20 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the transition from the era of internationalization into the era of globalization of Japan by focusing on language and identity as its central themes. By taking an interdisciplinary approach covering education, cultural studies, linguistics and policy-making, the chapters in this book raise certain questions of what constitutes contemporary Japanese culture, Japanese identity and multilingualism and what they mean to local people, including those who do not reside in Japan but are engaged with Japan in some way within the global community. Topics include the role of technology in the spread of Japanese language and culture, hybrid language use in an urban context, the Japanese language as a lingua franca in China, and the identity construction of heritage Japanese language speakers in Australia. The authors do not limit themselves to examining only the Japanese language or the Japanese national/cultural identity, but also explore multilingual practices and multiple/fluid identities in "a transitional Japan." Overall, the book responds to the basic need for better accounts of language and identity of Japan, particularly in the context of increased migration and mobility.

Book Synopsis Historical Dictionary of Tokyo by : Roman Cybriwsky
Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Tokyo written by Roman Cybriwsky and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2011-02-18 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tokyo is Japan's largest city and its capital. It is also one of the largest cities in the world and a major center of global economic influence. The origins of human settlement in what is today Tokyo are lost in prehistory. The city started out quite modestly as a small castle town of Edo in 1457, then the center of the Tokugawa shogunate from 1603-1868, the rapidly modernizing and Westernizing capital of the nation during the Meiji Period (1868-1912), and the capital of a prosperous nation and growing empire thereafter. Tokyo was utterly devastated during World War II, but this was not the first time Tokyo had to start seemingly from new. Due to many fires and earthquakes, the city has constantly rebuilt itself and today it outdoes all its previous emanations by far. The second edition of the Historical Dictionary of Tokyo is a much-needed reference source on the city. This is done through a chronology, an introductory essay, an extensive bibliography, and over 600 cross-referenced dictionary entries on people, places, events, and other terminology about the city of Tokyo. This book is a must for anyone interested in Japan and Tokyo.

Book Synopsis Japan - Restless Competitor by : Malcolm Trevor
Download or read book Japan - Restless Competitor written by Malcolm Trevor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this important new and controversial study about the nature and focus of the Japanese economic agenda, the author argues forcefully that the official mind-set of leading bureaucrats, top politicians and big business, makes it virtually impossible for the western industrialized world to do business on an equal footing. Put simply, it is a question of western free-market economics facing Japanese economic nationalism, which is, by its very nature, both an expansive and a protectionist ideology. International observers continue to ask is Japan changing?' or more forcefully, is Japan capable of change?'. Notions of reform' and restructuring' are today part of the Japanese lexicon, but appear to hold little substance. Trevor argues that any western notion of Japan changing fundamentally (i.e. adopting western, or Anglo-Saxon, philosophies) is facile completely unrealistic. This book is for everyone who wonders what motivates Japan's politico-economic system, and whether it is changing.
