She was excited about another summertime visit by train to her grandparents' home in Suffolk, Virginia. She was filled with peacefulness of seeing her Mom's parents once again for June, July and August. But at this visit, she was weighted down with heavy images on her mind. She was confused and perplexed and didn't know what to do, Her heart was unfeeling. She wondered if Eva and Pervis Tazell, her Mom's parents, should know the truth about Jasper Bailey, her father. She knew her grandparents were aware most of Jasper's unsavory extracurricular activities but there was something she longed desperately to tell them but was warned to keep her mouth shut. Jasper couldn't stand Eva and Pervis but kept his distance. There was a quiver in his gut to not challenge the old timer. Then the unspeakable. Joy's Mom died and she was left to the whim's of an evil father and a cruel aunt.

Book excerpt: My memoir is laced with nostalgia and at the same time it is my sincere intention to portray the true essence of the Guyanese culture without offence. Keep in mind that this is not based on the experience of every Guyanese. This was the way I saw and experienced things back then. The use of colloquialism is of utmost importance; it is the vernacular we understand. It may sound like another language so unless you were born and bred in Guyana you will need to refer to the glossary provided. Folklore and mothers preaching life lessons through proverbs played a large part in Guyanese life. This is not only an account of the first twenty-one years of my life in Guyana; it also contains anecdotes of visits back to my homeland. You will also find a sprinkling of information pertaining to my new life in Australia. Before immigrating to Australia I believed the sun only rose and set in Guyana; I never imagined another paradise existed on the planet. There is a saying that most Guyanese use to identify their roots after they have voluntarily immigrated or simply fled to another country. When we say, My navel string is buried in Guyana, we simply mean: My roots are there. Its a place where true and enduring friendships were formed forever. We will meet one another decades later and feel as if it was yesterday, reminiscing about our beloved land; lapsing into the language only a fellow Guyanese can understand. A famous Australian crooner said I still call Australia home, and I can assure you that saying applies to Guyanese who have immigrated to every corner of the globe. Navigating the labyrinth of family secrets was my one mission in life; I just had to know.

Book excerpt: Contemporary Caribbean Women's Poetry provides detailed readings of individual poems by women poets whose work has not yet received the sustained critical attention it deserves. These readings are contextualized both within Caribbean cultural debates and postcolonial and feminist critical discourses in a lively and engaged way; revisiting nationalist debates as well as topical issues about the performance of gendered and raced identities within poetic discourse. Newly available in paperback, this book is groundbreaking reading for all those interested in postcolonialism, Gender Studies, Caribbean Studies and contemporary poetry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first collection on Indo-Caribbean women's writing and the first work to offer a sustained analysis of the literature from a range of theoretical and critical perspectives, such as ecocriticism, feminist, queer, post-colonial and Caribbean cultural theories. The essays not only lay the framework of an emerging and growing field, but also critically situate internationally acclaimed writers such as Shani Mootoo, Lakshmi Persaud and Ramabai Espinet within this emerging tradition. Indo-Caribbean women writers provide a fresh new perspective in Caribbean literature, be it in their unique representations of plantation history, anti-colonial movements, diasporic identities, feminisms, ethnicity and race, or contemporary Caribbean societies and culture. The book offers a theoretical reading of the poetics, politics and cultural traditions that inform Indo-Caribbean women's writing, arguing that while women writers work with and through postcolonial and Caribbean cultural theories, they also respond to a distinctive set of influences and realities specific to their positioning within the Indo-Caribbean community and the wider national, regional and global imaginary. Contributors visit the overlap between national and transnational engagements in Indo-Caribbean women's literature, considering the writers' response to local or nationally specific contexts, and the writers' response to the diasporic and transnational modalities of Caribbean and Indo-Caribbean communities.

Book excerpt: In this sequel to “In Quest of the Rainbow,” Isabella Hamilton’s search for her estate and her parents takes her across the length of India and beyond, relentlessly pursued by her unknown enemies. But a group from her estate is always by her side, guiding her, advising her and protecting her. Joe McLeod, who has been tasked by the Court of Directors of the East India Company to convey her to her estate, joins her in her search, thereby lending her valuable support. But are the ones she believes to be her enemies, really so, or are they, unknown to her, actually her friends and protectors? And are Baldev Singh and his group, claiming to be from her estate, really her protectors, or are they, in fact, the enemy? And then there is the unseen, awesome, mysterious and all-powerful presence of the thing they had taken to be a mere amulet. Does Isabella locate her past? Does she find the estate? Does she discover who her enemies and who her true friends are? Why does the tiger roar whenever Isabella is in distress or in danger? And does she discover the secret of the amulet, the unearthing of which would unfurl all the mysteries and puzzles, and lead her to her ultimate goal? And how does Joe McLeod fit into all this?
