Book excerpt: Guyana Legends—Folk Tales of the Indigenous Amerindians By Odeen Ishmael G uyana Legends—Folk Tales of the Indigenous Amerindians is a collection of fifty folk tales of the first people to inhabit Guyana and the contiguous regions of the north coast of the South American continent. Very little is known of Amerindian history in Guyana before the arrival of European settlers in the early seventeenth century and, actually, no written form of their languages existed until about seventy years ago. Indeed, much of the history of the Amerindians people is based on oral traditions which are not quite clear because the periods when important events occurred are difficult to place. Still, native oral traditions are very rich in folk stories of the ancestral heroes and heroines of these indigenous people. Some of these folk stories have varying versions among the nine different language groups—or tribes— that comprise the Amerindian population of Guyana. Such a difference is illustrated in this book which presents two different tales of how fire was acquired and various versions of the legend of two immortal folk heroes, the bothers Makonaima and Pia. This present collection of Amerindian legends was compiled over a lengthy period of many years during which I listened to and collected versions of these tales from elderly Amerindians in various regions of Guyana, and more recently from Amerindian residents of the Delta Amacuro region of Venezuela, on the frontier with Guyana. Significantly, most of these legends were also summarised since the late nineteenth century by a succession of writers, including Everard F. im Thurn, W.H. Brett, Walter Roth and Leonard Lambert. But it is significant to note that those versions—by no means original—which were related by those writers of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries have undergone some changes with the passing years, and new characters have been added to them. Since Amerindians of the North West District of Guyana are ethnologically and culturally related to those in the eastern regions of Venezuela, particularly the Delta Amacuro region, it is noteworthy that the myths and legends of those Venezuelan Amerindians bear close similarities to those of their Guyanese counterparts. Interestingly, the Guajiro people—Amerindians of Arawak background living in north-west Venezuela near to Lake Maracaibo—also have some folk-tales that closely resemble those of their “relatives” living in the North-West District of Guyana and the Delta Amacuro region of Venezuela. For further information, the writings of Venezuelan researchers, Cesaréo de Armellada, Maria Manuela de Cora and Michel Perrin are recommended. It is essential to note too that an important character in Amerindian legend is “Tiger”. While there are a number of tigers in the stories—and generally they are all villains—these animals, however, are not part of the fauna in Guyana or the entire American continent. What is generally referred to as a “tiger” is the large spotted jaguar. And the “black tiger”, mentioned in one of the stories in this book, is the large South American puma. Twenty of the folk tales included in this collection appear in my earlier book, Amerindian Legends of Guyana, published in 1995. However, they have now been revised and, in some cases, retitled. Among the thirty other stories are those of two clever tricksters in Amerindian folklore, the lazy but sly Konehu and the wily rabbit, Koneso. Readers will find these legends of the original inhabitants of Guyana informative in the anthropological sense, in addition to being interesting and entertaining at the same time.

Book excerpt: Saicho (767-822), the founder of the Tendai School, is one of the great masters of Japanese Buddhism. This edition, which includes a new preface by the author, makes available again a classic work on this important figure’s life and accomplishments. Groner’s study focuses on Saicho’s founding of the great monastic center on Mount Hiei, the leading religious institution of medieval Japan, and his radical move to adopt for purposes of ordination the Mahayana bodhisattva precepts--a decision that had far-reaching consequences for the future of Japanese Buddhist ethical thought, monastic training and organization, lay-clerical relations, philosophical developments, and Buddhism-state relations.

She drank in his powers and became the Queen of the Vrykolakes, known by the ancient Greeks as the bloodless vampires. She and Severin have settled into some semblance of a normal life, living in rural North America with their two kids, Connor and Kaie. Their neighbors would never suspect that they are anything more than a typical family. Aside from keeping their true identity a secret, everything seems to be going well. Until, their twelve year old daughter, Kaie, goes missing. Are monsters ever afraid of the dark? When Kaie finally awakens, she is no longer a child, and she is no longer in familiar surroundings. The Forbidding awaits. Echoes of madness surround her. The Belows warn of doom. Legend holds that whatever is born or brought into the Belows must remain there. Kaie vows to find a way to return to her family, but first she must learn to face her darkest fear, if she is ever to escape from the darkness below.

Book excerpt: Praise for To Conquer a Highlander: "Not to be missed." —Lora Leigh, New York Times bestselling author of Lion's Heat Ruined, Betrayed, and banished... As brave as she is impulsive, Deirdre Chattan's tendency to follow her heart and not her head has finally tarnished her reputation beyond repair. But when powerful Highland Laird Quinton Cameron finds her, he doesn't care about her past—it's her future he's about to change... But it's never too late for redemption... From the moment Quinton sets eyes on Deirdre Chattan, rational thought vanishes. For in her eyes he sees a fiery spirit that matches his own, and he'll be damned if he'll let such a wild Scottish rose wither under the weight of a nun's habit... With nothing to lose, Deirdre and Quinton band together to protect king and country. But what they can accomplish alone is nothing compared to what they can build with their passion for each other... What readers say about Mary Wine's Scottish romance: "Simply extraordinary." "Scottish Highlands, rugged and virile warriors—there is nothing like it." "Plenty of romance, action, intrigue, and danger."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the Indigenous people, enslaved Africans, indentured Portuguese, Chinese, and Indian laborers provides an in-depth view of the evolution of the Guyanese people. It provides evidence of their strong cultural identity and reveals their ambitions, sense of direction, and perseverance to strive for well-being and happiness in the best possible life. A chain of events began in 1953 when British Guiana elected its first native-born leader, Dr. Cheddi Jagan. The British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, suspended British Guiana’s Constitution, ordered the dissolution of the Government, and imprisonment of the elected leader, his wife, and members of his cabinet as they were not compatible to Churchill’s taste. The United States of America had difficulty appreciating how different forms of government and economic systems are applied in different countries. In 1961, President John F Kennedy ordered his Central Intelligence Agency to subvert the elected leader of British Guiana. The leader fell and the CIA’s men, accomplishing their task, moved on to another. Thirty years later, the fallen leader was again democratically elected to lead his country. President Kennedy’s ruthless subversion of democracy became the policy for subsequent elections of using the divisive concept of racial and ethnic segregations. The racial and ethnic prejudices have affected the distribution of power, opportunity, and wealth and creating enduring social stratifications. The children became adults with a poor understanding of how imperialism, the ancestral slaves and indentured laborers influenced their lives and their country, and the powerful and lasting effects they have.

Book excerpt: An original, inventive--and visually stunning--exploration of place, identity, language, and experience from the acclaimed poet, novelist, and sound performer. GRIFFIN POETRY PRIZE WINNER QWF A.M. KLEIN PRIZE FOR POETRY FINALIST The poems in Kaie Kellough's third collection drift between South and North America. They seek their ancestry in Georgetown, Guyana, in the Amazon Rainforest, and in the Atlantic Ocean. They haunt the Canadian Prairie. They recall the 1980s in the suburbs of Calgary, and they reflect on the snowed-in, bricked-in boroughs of post-referendum Montréal. They puzzle their language together from the natural world and from the works of Caribbean and Canadian writers. They reassemble passages about seed catalogues, about origins, about finding a way in the world, about black ships sailing across to land. They struggle to explain a state of being hemisphered, of being present here while carrying a heartbeat from elsewhere, and they map the distances travelled.

This book was released on 2015-08-01 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been a pain- staking study of collecting information and various interpretations from different sources. The preoccupation of Harris is to explore and discover “the buried truth” in the Individual psyche. I have attempted to show the “wholeness” of Man which is the major concern of Harris. His creative insights into the ‘The unknown modes of being’ are profound. He tries to suggest an alternative vision of Reality’ to the upheavlls and raging conflicts of the twentienth century. I have drawn parallels and comparisons to the Indian tradition of The Upanishads to argue that Man strives after the ‘indivisible whole’. I have not included his recent novels such as Carnival (1985), The Four Banks of the River of Space (1990), The Carnival Trilogy (1993), Jonestown (1996), The Dark Jester (2001) and The Mask of the Beggar (2003).
