Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presiding over the "golden era" of the British Film Industry from the mid to late 1940s, J. Arthur Rank financed movies such as Oliver Twist, The Red Shoes, Brief Encounter, Caesar and Cleopatra and Black Narcissus. Never before, and never since, has the industry risen to such heights. J. Arthur Rank charts every aspect of the robust film culture that Rank helped to create. Having started out with relatively little knowledge of the cinema, Rank's sponsorship was to bring about astounding progress within the industry, and by establishing an organization comparable in size to any of the major Hollywood studios, Rank briefly managed to reconcile and consolidate the competing demands of "art" and "business" - an achievement very much absent from today's diminished and fragmented film industry. Macnab goes on to explain the eventual collapse of the Rank experiment amidst the economic and political maelstrom of post-war Britain, highlighting the problems still facing the industry today. By meshing archival research with interviews with Rank's contemporaries and members of his family, this definitive study firmly restores Rank to his rightful place at the hub of British film history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SPECTATOR BOOKS OF THE YEAR 2015 Britain's empire has gone. Our manufacturing base is a shadow of its former self; the Royal Navy has been reduced to a skeleton. In military, diplomatic and economic terms, we no longer matter as we once did. And yet there is still one area in which we can legitimately claim superpower status: our popular culture. It is extraordinary to think that one British writer, J. K. Rowling, has sold more than 400 million books; that Doctor Who is watched in almost every developed country in the world; that James Bond has been the central character in the longest-running film series in history; that The Lord of the Rings is the second best-selling novel ever written (behind only A Tale of Two Cities); that the Beatles are still the best-selling musical group of all time; and that only Shakespeare and the Bible have sold more books than Agatha Christie. To put it simply, no country on earth, relative to its size, has contributed more to the modern imagination. This is a book about the success and the meaning of Britain's modern popular culture, from Bond and the Beatles to heavy metal and Coronation Street, from the Angry Young Men to Harry Potter, from Damien Hirst toThe X Factor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J. Arthur Rank was the biggest and perhaps the most unlikely of film moguls. The staunch Methodist, and blunt Yorkshire miller, maintained he only became involved in movies after discovering the popularity of some religious films he ran at his local Sunday school; after exhausting their supply he decided to fund the production of more himself to help spread 'the word of god'. Many mocked him, many didn't understand him, some even tried to rip him off, but all - ultimately - were in awe of him as he moved into more mainstream entertainment and went on to preside over Britain's largest ever film empire with studios, laboratories, distribution, and exhibition, along with a stable of contract directors, producers, and artistes under his control. The Rank Organisation's film division was unrivaled - before or since - and all of their movies were graced by a man hitting a large golden gong. Films ranging from the definitive Titanic disaster A Night To Remember, to the hugely successful Doctor, Norman Wisdom, Carry On comedy film series, the enchantingly delightful Genevieve, Hitchcock thrillers The Lady Vanishes and The Thirty Nine Steps, Powell and Pressburger masterpieces such as The Red Shoes, Black Narcissus and The Tales Of Hoffman, David Lean's Oliver Twist and Great Expectations, through to British modern-classics Defence Of The Realm, The Fourth Protocol, Four Weddings And A Funeral and Circle Of Friends all came out of the company. Separately its studios, Pinewood, housed blockbusters ranging from most of the James Bond films, Superman, Aliens, Batman, Harry Potter, the more recent Star Wars films and is now a long-term base for Disney's many big-budget productions; and it's distribution arm Rank Film Distributors oversaw the release of 700-plus productions. Through interviews conducted by the author from 1999 onwards with stars, producers, directors, technicians, and executives this book charts Rank's initial involvement in film, through to the many experiments and initiatives he backed, the crises he carried the British film industry through, to the company's ultimate downfall and disposal - with all film divisions being sold in the late 1990s and early 2000s. This is the definitive history of one of the film world's biggest players. Gareth Owen has written 20 books and has been based at Pinewood Studios since 1994.

Book excerpt: The famous problems of squaring the circle, doubling the cube and trisecting an angle captured the imagination of both professional and amateur mathematicians for over two thousand years. Despite the enormous effort and ingenious attempts by these men and women, the problems would not yield to purely geometrical methods. It was only the development. of abstract algebra in the nineteenth century which enabled mathematicians to arrive at the surprising conclusion that these constructions are not possible. In this book we develop enough abstract algebra to prove that these constructions are impossible. Our approach introduces all the relevant concepts about fields in a way which is more concrete than usual and which avoids the use of quotient structures (and even of the Euclidean algorithm for finding the greatest common divisor of two polynomials). Having the geometrical questions as a specific goal provides motivation for the introduction of the algebraic concepts and we have found that students respond very favourably. We have used this text to teach second-year students at La Trobe University over a period of many years, each time refining the material in the light of student performance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A satirical mash-up of Catch-22 by Joseph Heller and Up the Down Staircase by Bel Kaufman, the author (a former teacher) attempts to lay bare the dystopian bureaucratic nightmare enveloping the public school system in the US in an at-times humorous and at-times poignant fashion. Niles is a idealistic new teacher entering into a system that seems made to wreck him. He meets many intriguing people along the way, but he finds that not everyone seems to have the best interests of the students in mind. "Best practice" when misapplied breaks down and becomes "worst practice" when the future is at stake. It has been called "captivating" by readers. Another said, "I didn't want to put it down." The US Secretary of Education wanted to take its funding and redirect it into vouchers for private faith-based education. The real question it poses beyond asking if we're going to allow certain people to pervert the system to advance their own selfish ends, is whether or not satire is dead in the modern age.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arthur Penn: American Director is the comprehensive biography of one of the twentieth century's most influential filmmakers. Thematic chapters lucidly convey the story of Penn's life and career, as well as pertinent events in the history of American film, theater, and television. In the process of tracing the full spectrum of his career, Arthur Penn reveals the enormous scope of Penn's talent and his profound impact on the entertainment industry in an accessible, engaging account of the well-known director's life. Born in 1922 to a family of Philadelphia immigrants, the young Penn was bright but aimless -- especially compared to his talented older brother Irving, who would later become a world-renowned photographer. Penn drifted into directing, but he soon mastered the craft in three mediums: television, Broadway, and motion pictures. By the time he made Bonnie and Clyde (1967), Penn was already a Tony-winning Broadway director and one of the prodigies of the golden age of television. His innovative handling of the story of two Depression-era outlaws not only challenged Hollywood's strict censorship code, it shook the foundation of studio system itself and ushered in the film revolution. His next films -- Alice's Restaurant (1969), Little Big Man (1970), and Night Moves (1975) -- became instant classics, summoning emotions from shock to sensuality and from confusion to horror, all of which reflected the complexity of the man behind the camera. The personal and creative odyssey captured in these pages includes memorable adventures in World War II; the chaotic days of live television; the emergence of Method acting in Hollywood; and experiences with Marlon Brando, Anne Bancroft, Warren Beatty, William Gibson, Lillian Hellman, and a host of other show business legends.
