Book Synopsis With Sighs Too Deep for Words by : A. Robert Hirschfeld
Download or read book With Sighs Too Deep for Words written by A. Robert Hirschfeld and published by Church Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-06-17 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A meditation and prayer companion for Christians who struggle with depression. The stigma around mental illness in our culture has had a damaging effect on those who suffer from its grip. As a priest and bishop, Hirschfeld has quietly and secretly been in treatment for depression for decades but now shares his own experience publicly. In this book, he offers short meditations, prayers, and suggestions of how one can follow and call upon Jesus for strength and peace during times of emotional upheaval. Christians often feel that their experience of depression or mental illness is a reflection of a deficit in their faith. As a result of seeing depression as a moral shortcoming or spiritual failure, we risk more damage to ourselves and even hurt those around us by denying what is really going on. This book, with its prayers and practical suggestions for spiritual and creative practices and resilience, can be a companion for those who suffer so that they may know more deeply the resilient love of Jesus.

Book Synopsis The Suppression of Depression by : Marion Wright Jr MD
Download or read book The Suppression of Depression written by Marion Wright Jr MD and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some Christians experience a degree of internal conflict when it comes to seeking help for medical issues. On one hand, they believe in God for their healing. On the other, they acknowledge that they are dealing with symptoms and conditions that could be treated by medical professionals. The challenge then becomes reconciling their faith with their efforts to be well and healthy. From my observations, there have been great strides in Christian thinking regarding seeking help for physical health problems. However, this does not seem to be the case when it comes to mental health issues including depression. From my professional experiences as a psychiatrist and in my personal walk as a Christian, I have observed what appears to be a stigma when it comes to depression. Some Christians may believe that they should never be depressed, and if they are, it indicates some failure of their faith or weakness thereof. Some feel embarrassed about having depression and, therefore, are reluctant to seek help for it, if they do at all. They may feel that the very act of seeking professional help also indicates weakness in their faith. Therefore, they resolve to deal with depression strictly by spiritual means e.g. prayer and Bible reading. In this book, I address this stigma that exists among Christians when it comes to depression. My intention is to dispel myths about depression and to get people to understand that it is a condition to which we are all vulnerable. I also hope to increase people's understanding of God's will that we have healthy minds as well as healthy bodies. Depression need not be a condition that people deal with in silence given that there is help available for it.
Book Synopsis This Side of Darkness by : Lynn Vanderdasson
Download or read book This Side of Darkness written by Lynn Vanderdasson and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2019-08-29 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, This Side of Darkness, illuminates and exposes the horrific stigma associated with depression and anxiety. Many Christians look down upon the depressed and anxious Christian because they wrongly believe that it is caused from a lack of faith. After all, real Christians don’t get down in a constant mood of profound sadness for an extended length of time! Real Christians aren’t anxious about anything to the point of sickness. Real Christians don’t get ulcers from stress, real Christians don’t ..........real Christians don’t.......... This book reveals what Depression really is and what it is not. It is important for the one suffering with such depth of hopelessness and despair to realize that this “thing” called depression is NOT a spiritual matter but a bio/chemical disease. The depressant (that is what I call us) that is told to “snap out of it” and “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” cannot cure themselves any more than a cancer patient or diabetic can cure themselves without professional help! So, with this erroneous ideation that this is a spiritual problem, they, not only have the depression and anxiety to deal with but are pushed deeper into the dark pit with the shame and guilt of thinking that it is a lack of faith and spiritual maturity. Have you ever heard that depression and anxiety for a Christian is a lack of faith? Please note that it is not a spiritual weakness but a bio/chemical disorder causing the brain to malfunction.

Book excerpt: n this unflinching look at depression and the human struggle to find hope in its midst, acclaimed author Tim Farrington writes with heartrending honesty of his lifelong struggle with the condition he calls "a hell of mercy." With both wry humor and poignancy, he unravels the profound connection between depression and the spiritual path, the infamous dark night of the soul made popular by mystic John of the Cross. While depression can be a heartbreaking time of isolation and lethargy, it can also provide powerful spiritual insights and healing times of surrender. When doctors prescribe medication, patients are often left feeling as if part of their very selves has been numbed in order to become what some might call "normal." Farrington wrestles with profound questions, such as: When is depression a part of your identity, and when does it hold you back from realizing your potential? In the tradition of Darkness Visible and An Unquiet Mind, A Hell of Mercy is both a much needed companion for those walking this difficult terrain as well as a guide for anyone who has watched a loved one grapple with this inner emotional darkness.
