Despite its ancient roots, virtue ethics has only recently been fully appreciated as a resource for environmental philosophy. Other approaches dominated by utilitarian and duty-based appeals for sacrifice and restraint have had little success in changing behavior, even to the extent that ecological concerns have been embraced. Our actions often do not align with our beliefs. Fundamental to virtue ethics is an acknowledgment that neither good ethical rules nor good intentions are effective absent the character required to bring them to fulfillment. Brian Treanor builds on recent work on virtue ethics in environmental philosophy, finding an important grounding in the narrative theory of philosophers like Paul Ricoeur and Richard Kearney. Character and ethical formation, Treanor argues, are intimately tied to our relationship with the narratives through which we view the human place in the natural world. By reframing environmental questions in terms of individual, social, and environmental narratives about flourishing, Emplotting Virtue offers a powerful vision of how we might remake our character so as to live more happily, more sustainably, and more virtuously in a diverse, beautiful, wondrous, and fragile world.

To advance the development of these machines, specialised research in custom-built hardware designed for specific types of computation, which mirrors the structure of powerful biological nervous systems, is especially important. This dissertation is driven by the quest to harness biological and artificial neural principles to enhance the efficiency, adaptability, and intelligence of electronic neurosynaptic and neuromorphic hardware systems. It investigates the hardware design of bio-inspired neural components and their integration into more extensive scale and efficient chip architectures suitable for edge processing and near-sensor environments. Exploring all steps to the creation of a custom chip, this work selectively surveys and advances the state-of-the-art in bio-inspired mixed-signal subthreshold integrated design for neurosynaptic systems in a practical fashion. Further, it presents a novel asynchronous digital convolutional neuronal network processing pipeline integrated with a vision sensor for smart sensing. In conclusion, it sets forth a series of open challenges and future directions for the field, emphasizing the need for a robust, future-proof base for bio-inspired design and the potential of asynchronous stream processor architectures.

Apiqoros: The Last Essays of Salomon Maimon draws attention to works written during the final years of Maimon's life. These essays are of particular interest: they show that even though Maimon was a self-proclaimed apiqoros grappling with the implications of Kantian philosophy, his thinking remained deeply influenced by his Jewish intellectual inheritance, especially by Maimonides. The volume is divided into two parts. The first is a general account of Maimon's intellectual biography, along with commentary on his final essays. The second part provides translations of those essays, the principal themes of which concern moral psychology. The reader is thus able to see the degree to which Maimon, at the end of his life, became skeptical of his effort to unite Kant and Maimonides, and remained a thinker caught "between two worlds." The book concludes with a translation of an account of Maimon's final hours, penned by one of his friends.
