Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insect Miscellanies IT was well said by the distinguished Danish natu ralist, Fabricius, that nothing in natural history is more abstruse and difficult than an accurate descrip tion of the senses of animals This inherent complexity of the subject appears to have induced Lehmann to undertake the investigation of the senses Of insects He collected into a focus all that was known previous to his time, though he has added very little from his own observation; but since that period much has been done by Marcel de Serres, Wollaston, Muller, and others. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insect Transformation So many great names are enshrined in the literature of Insect Transformation, that the publication of a new book on the familiar theme may appear hazardous if not presumptuous. And as with lapse of time the literature accumulates, a well-balanced treatment of the subject becomes increasingly difficult. In this - volume designed to serve as an introduction to the study of growth and change in the life of insects - the author has sought, while re-telling many well-known stories, to call attention to some structural details that have hitherto escaped mention in text-books, and to discuss the relation of such details to the wider problems of insect life-histories. He ventures, therefore, to hope that the book may be of some service to serious workers in entomology as well as to beginners. Descriptions of the form of adult insects are given only in so far as is necessary to elucidate the structure of larvae, pupae, and immature stages generally. No attempt has been made to compile a bibliography, but references are given to books and papers to which the writer is indebted, and full lists of titles are to be found in many of these. Especial acknowledgment is due to the writings of A. S. Packard, L. C. Miall, L. F. Henneguy, J. H. Comstock and R. J. Tillyard. The source of every borrowed illustration is indicated in its title, and the thanks of the author and publishers are rendered to the United States Department of Agriculture, the Cambridge University Press, and the Royal Dublin Society, for the loan of blocks. The Cambridge Press has generously allowed the use of several figures from the author's "Lifestory of Insects," and from Dr. Tillyard's "Biology of Dragon-flies," while Prof. J. H. Comstock has kindly granted the use of illustrations from "The Wings of Insects," and from his lately-published "Introduction to Entomology." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insects: Their Life-Histories and Habits IN the following pages an attempt is made to set forth, in simple terms, the salient facts of entomology - that branch of science which treats of insects. It has been said truly that a man might devote his whole life to the study of only one insect without exhausting the possibilities of his subject. Consequently, a work such as the present must be in great measure a compilation, and I freely acknowledge my indebtedness to a large body of workers who have placed on record their observations concerning the structure and habits of insects. I believe that I am especially beholden to the writings of Lord Avebury, Professor G. H. Carpenter, Sir E. Bay Lankester, Professor E. B. Poulton, and Dr. David Sharp, but in almost every instance where an important fact or conclusion is re-stated, the name of the authority is given in the context. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Injurious and Beneficial, Insects of California Insect devastation costs the United States millions of dollars annu ally. California bears her full share, two millions being a reasonable estimate. Wise and timely application of well-known remedies would save much of this constant loss. Mr. E. O. Essig's signal success in the discovery and practice of control measures pointed him out as one fit to instruct the public as to the life histories of insects and the best methods to control their attacks. This led to the publication by the State Commission of Horticulture two years ago of Injurious and Beneficial Insects of California. Anticipating a great demand for the book, a very large edition was issued. These anticipa tions were greatly exceeded, and very soon, the edition was wholly exhausted. Commendation of the work was most hearty and reached the Commission from all countries, far and near. The call for another edition was loud and general. The Commission is greatly pleased to heed this request in the present enlarged and improved edition, which it feels sure will be very heartily welcomed.
