Download or read book Women Workers, Migration and Family in Sarawak written by Cheng Sim Hew and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-08-27 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many parts of South-East Asia, women's lifestyles are going through enormous changes as women move from traditional rural, agricultural lifestyles to modern, urban lifestyles, which often involve migration to cities, taking on paid work, and having a quite different relationship with their families. This book, based on intensive research among the women of the Bidayuh people in Sarawak, all of them first generation migrant wage workers, explores the extent to which women's lifestyles are changing, and the reasons which prompt women to make the changes. How far are such women driven by economic considerations, how far by dissatisfaction with traditional lifestyles, and how far by the appeal of a glamorous urban lifestyle? The author's research includes detailed interviews in the field, and much of this interview material is included in the book, thereby enabling the Bidayuh women to tell their own stories as they grapple with the rapid changes swirling around them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection contributes to key theoretical debates about women workers in Asia and breaks new ground by focussing on issues that have been little documented in other studies in the area. It provides new information and insights into labour systems associated with labour intensive export manufactures and state-labour relations in a comparative context. The contributors present a range of unique and varied perspectives from which they consider aspects of the increasing integration of Asian economies, exploring implications for their labour markets.
Book Synopsis The Malay Labourer by : Zawawi Ibrahim
Download or read book The Malay Labourer written by Zawawi Ibrahim and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 1998 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the ethnography of the emerging proletarian social consciousness and resistance as Malay peasants from east coast peninsular Malaysia find themselves reconstituted as a "class" not only as an economic category but also as a "community" in plantation society. The plantation, as a "window" to capitalism, serves as an excellent small-scale empirical ambience and testing-ground to probe how Malays respond to both industrial class-status authority and wage labouring work. The author subsequently analyses how the nuances of Malay proletarian moral economy and dignity are articulated with their notions of class, culture, ethnicity, and humanism.
Book Synopsis Different Places, Different Voices by : Vivian Kinnaird
Download or read book Different Places, Different Voices written by Vivian Kinnaird and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-03-11 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Different Places, Different Voices challenges Western feminist and post-colonial approaches in its analysis of the changing lives of women of Asia, Africa, Latin America and Oceania. Recognising the significance of place, this is a book informed by the voices of female geographers from the developing world. Twenty case studies present regional perspectives on urban and rural development, household reproduction and production and community organisation. The theoretical and contextual approach and the emphasis on location and positionality highlight the differences created by place to suggest other ways of seeing.

Book Synopsis Economic Development and Women in the World Community by : Hans C. Blomqvist
Download or read book Economic Development and Women in the World Community written by Hans C. Blomqvist and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1996-02-16 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After reviewing theories about how women are likely to fare as a result of economic development, the editors and their contributors focus on the socioeconomic status of women and changes in it as a result of processes of economic development in individual countries in five continents. Economic development is supposed to remove impediments to the improvement in women's status. In some developing countries researchers have found that instead of lessening the forces of restrictions, economic development may, in fact, have strengthened them. The editors call for a greater involvement of women as active participants in the process of dismantling social, legal, and institutional barriers to women's development.
