Book Synopsis Campus Unions by : Timothy Reese Cain
Download or read book Campus Unions written by Timothy Reese Cain and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With roughly 25% of those teaching college classes belonging to a union, higher education is one of the most heavily organized industries in the United States. Substantial research-based literature exists as scholars have been studying the topic for a half of a century. Following an overview of its history and context, this monograph synthesizes and analyzes the existing research on faculty and graduate student unionization. It points to evolving understandings of faculty attitudes regarding collective bargaining and the findings on the relationships between unionization and compensation, satisfaction, procedural protections, organizational effectiveness, and related issues for tenure-line faculty. Additional chapters consider the more limited research on non-tenure-line faculty and graduate student instructors. As such, this monograph illuminates the accepted understandings, contested arguments, and the substantial gaps in understandings that remain. This is the third issue of the 43rd volume of the Jossey-Bass series ASHE Higher Education Report. Each monograph is the definitive analysis of a tough higher education issue, based on thorough research of pertinent literature and institutional experiences. Topics are identified by a national survey. Noted practitioners and scholars are then commissioned to write the reports, with experts providing critical reviews of each manuscript before publication.

Book Synopsis Workplace Democracy by : Donald V. Nightingale
Download or read book Workplace Democracy written by Donald V. Nightingale and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1982-12-15 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book begins with a historical review of how authority in the Canadian workplace has changed over the past century. It proceeds to outline a theory of organization which provides a broad conceptual framework for the empirical analysis which follows. This theory is based on five concepts: the values of organizational members; the administrative structure of the organization; the interpersonal and intergroup processes; the reactions and adjustments of organization members; the social, political, economic, and cultural environments of the organization. A sample of 20 industrial organizations was selected to examine the effects of significant employee participation and to test the theory. They are matched pairs: ten permit some form of participation, and ten—similar in size, location, industry, union/non-union status, and work technology—follow conventional hierarchical design. The resulting data demonstrate that greater productivity results from employee participation in decisions relating to their work, in productivity bonuses, and in profit sharing and employee share-ownership plans.

Book Synopsis Boundaryless Careers and Occupational Wellbeing by : M. Cortini
Download or read book Boundaryless Careers and Occupational Wellbeing written by M. Cortini and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-12-14 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between the so called boundaryless careers and the occupational wellbeing is a fascinating issue. The themes of boundaryless and protean careers are noteworthy if we consider the challenges posed by a transition to more temporary employment arrangements from an industrial to a knowledge-based economy we are facing today. The book is enriched by empirical data analysis and case studies, which on one hand allow an in-depth view of the relation between new careers and wellbeing for specialists and, on the other one, become a fertile benchmark for professionals to look at. The novelty is represented by the effort of giving such construct an interdisciplinary approach, moving from law to organizational psychology, to economy, and to occupational health.
