Book Synopsis Development of Thermal Envelope Design Guidelines for Federal Office Buildings by : Andrew K. Persily
Download or read book Development of Thermal Envelope Design Guidelines for Federal Office Buildings written by Andrew K. Persily and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Office building envelopes are generally successful in meeting a range of structural, aesthetic and thermal requirements. However, poor thermal envelope performance will occur when there are discontinuities in the envelope insulation and air barrier systems, such as thermal bridges and air leakage sites. These discontinuities result from designs that do not adequately account for heat, air and moisture transmission, with many thermal defects being associated with inappropriate or inadequate detailing of the connections of envelope components. Despite the existence of these thermal envelope performance problems, information is available to design and construct envelopes that do perform well. In order to close the gap between available knowledge and current practice, the Public Buildings Service of the General Services Administration has entered into an interagency agreement with the Center for Building Technology of the National Institute of Standards and Technology to develop thermal envelope design guidelines for federal office buildings. The goal of this project is to transfer the knowledge on thermal envelope design and performance from the building research, design and construction communities into a form that will be used by building design professionals. This report describes the NIST/GSA envelope design guidelines development at the end of the first year of effort on the project. The effort to this point has consisted of a literature review of research results and technical information on thermal envelope performance and design, an assessment of existing design guidelines as they relate to the thermal envelope, and the development of a format and outline for the design guidelines.
Book Synopsis Research in Building Physics and Building Engineering by : Paul Fazio
Download or read book Research in Building Physics and Building Engineering written by Paul Fazio and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-11-25 with total page 1009 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buildings influence people. They account for one third of energy consumption across the globe and represent an annual capital expenditure of 7%-10% of GNP in industrialized countries. Their lifetime operation costs can exceed capital investment. Building Engineering aims to make buildings more efficient, safe and economical. One branch of this discipline, Building Physics/Science, has gained prominence, with a heightened awareness of such phenomena as sick buildings, the energy crisis and sustainability, and considering the performance of buildings in terms of climatic loads and indoor conditions. The book reflects the advanced level and high quality of research which Building Engineering, and Building Physics/Science in particular, have reached at the beginning of the twenty-first century. It will be a valuable resource to: engineers, architects, building scientists, consultants on the building envelope, researchers and graduate students.

Book Synopsis Environmental Aspects of Housing for Animal Production by : J. A. Clark
Download or read book Environmental Aspects of Housing for Animal Production written by J. A. Clark and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Aspects of Housing for Animal Production is concerned with environmental aspects of housing farm animals. The discussions are organized around physical and physiological principles; environmental influences on reproduction; environmental influences on the productivity of farm animals; optimal housing environments for temperate and cool climates; housing environments for hot climates; engineering and control of the house environment; and the constraints of welfare and disease. This text consists of 32 chapters divided into nine sections. The first chapter explores the physiological mechanisms whereby the food- or fiber-producing animals maintain a constant body temperature under climatic extremes and the possible impact that these physiological processes may have on productive systems. This discussion is followed by chapters on the influence of climate on the decision to house livestock; the effect of the environment on animal reproduction; thermal influences on poultry; and the importance of ventilation and temperature control. This text also considers the poultry housing problems in tropical and subtropical climates; insulation of animal houses; and the interaction between feathering and egg production in laying hens. This book will appeal to those working in the field of housing for animal production, both in research and development and at a practical level.
