Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Code-division multiple access (CDMA) technology has been widely adopted in cell phones. Its astonishing success has led many to evaluate the promise of this technology for optical networks. This field has come to be known as Optical CDMA (OCDMA). Surveying the field from its infancy to the current state, Optical Code Division Multiple Access: Fundamentals and Applications offers the first comprehensive treatment of OCDMA from technology to systems. The book opens with a historical perspective, demonstrating the growth and development of the technologies that would eventually evolve into today's optical networks. Building on this background, the discussion moves to coherent and incoherent optical CDMA coding techniques and performance analysis of these codes in fiber optic transmission systems. Individual chapters provide detailed examinations of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) technology including theory, design, and applications; coherent OCDMA systems; and incoherent OCDMA systems. Turning to implementation, the book includes hybrid multiplexing techniques along with system examples and conversion techniques to connect networks that use different multiplexing platforms, state-of-the-art integration technologies, OCDMA network security issues, and OCDMA network architectures and applications, including a look at possible future directions. Featuring contributions from a team of international experts led by a pioneer in optical technology, Optical Code Division Multiple Access: Fundamentals and Applications places the concepts, techniques, and technologies in clear focus for anyone working to build next-generation optical networks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern, current, and future communications/processing aspects motivate basic information-theoretic research for a wide variety of systems for which we do not have the ultimate theoretical solutions (for example, a variety of problems in network information theory as the broadcast/interference and relay channels, which mostly remain unsolved in terms of determining capacity regions and the like). Technologies such as 5/6G cellular communications, Internet of Things (IoT), and mobile edge networks, among others, not only require reliable rates of information measured by the relevant capacity and capacity regions, but are also subject to issues such as latency vs. reliability, availability of system state information, priority of information, secrecy demands, energy consumption per mobile equipment, sharing of communications resources (time/frequency/space), etc. This book, composed of a collection of papers that have appeared in the Special Issue of the Entropy journal dedicated to “Information Theory for Data Communications and Processing”, reflects, in its eleven chapters, novel contributions based on the firm basic grounds of information theory. The book chapters address timely theoretical and practical aspects that constitute both interesting and relevant theoretical contributions, as well as direct implications for modern current and future communications systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perfectly-secure cryptography is a branch of information-theoretic cryptography. A perfectly-secure cryptosystem guarantees that the malicious third party cannot guess anything regarding the plain text or the key, even in the case of full access to the cipher text. Despite this advantage, there are only a few real-world implementations of perfect secrecy due to some well-known limitations. Any simple, straightforward modeling can pave the way for further advancements in the implementation, especially in environments with time and resource constraints such as IoT. This book takes one step towards this goal via presenting a hybrid combinatorial-Boolean model for perfectly-secure cryptography in IoT. In this book, we first present an introduction to information-theoretic cryptography as well as perfect secrecy and its real-world implementations. Then we take a systematic approach to highlight information-theoretic cryptography as a convergence point for existing trends in research on cryptography in IoT. Then we investigate combinatorial and Boolean cryptography and show how they are seen almost everywhere in the ecosystem and the life cycle of information-theoretic IoT cryptography. We finally model perfect secrecy in IoT using Boolean functions, and map the Boolean functions to simple, well-studied combinatorial designs like Latin squares. This book is organized in two parts. The first part studie s information-theoretic cryptography and the promise it holds for cryptography in IoT. The second part separately discusses combinatorial and Boolean cryptography, and then presents the hybrid combinatorial-Boolean model for perfect secrecy in IoT.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James A. Storer Computer Science Dept. Brandeis University Waltham, MA 02254 Data compression is the process of encoding a body of data to reduce stor age requirements. With Lossless compression, data can be decompressed to be identical to the original, whereas with lossy compression, decompressed data may be an acceptable approximation (according to some fidelity criterion) to the original. For example, with digitized video, it may only be necessary that the decompressed video look as good as the original to the human eye. The two primary functions of data compression are: Storage: The capacity of a storage device can be effectively increased with data compression software or hardware that compresses a body of data on its way to the storage device and decompress it when it is retrieved. Communications: The bandwidth of a digital communication link can be effectively increased by compressing data at the sending end and decom pressing data at the receiving end. Here it can be crucial that compression and decompression can be performed in real time.

Book excerpt: This book constitutes the strictly refereed post-workshop proceedings of the First International Workshop on Information Hiding, held in Cambridge, UK, in May/June 1996, within the research programme in computer security, cryptology and coding theory organized by the volume editor at the Isaac Newton Institute in Cambridge. Work on information hiding has been carried out over the last few years within different research communities, mostly unaware of each other's existence. The 26 papers presented define the state of the art and lay the foundation for a common terminology. This workshop is very likely to be seen at some point as one of those landmark events that mark the birth of a new scientific discipline.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a mathematical foundation for modern cryptography. It is primarily intended as an introduction for graduate students. Readers should have basic knowledge of probability theory, but familiarity with computational complexity is not required. Starting from Shannon's classic result on secret key cryptography, fundamental topics of cryptography, such as secret key agreement, authentication, secret sharing, and secure computation, are covered. Particular attention is drawn to how correlated randomness can be used to construct cryptographic primitives. To evaluate the efficiency of such constructions, information-theoretic tools, such as smooth min/max entropies and information spectrum, are developed. The broad coverage means the book will also be useful to experts as well as students in cryptography as a reference for information-theoretic concepts and tools.

Book excerpt: Artificial neural networks are nonlinear mapping systems whose structure is loosely based on principles observed in the nervous systems of humans and animals. The basic idea is that massive systems of simple units linked together in appropriate ways can generate many complex and interesting behaviors. This book focuses on the subset of feedforward artificial neural networks called multilayer perceptrons (MLP). These are the mostly widely used neural networks, with applications as diverse as finance (forecasting), manufacturing (process control), and science (speech and image recognition). This book presents an extensive and practical overview of almost every aspect of MLP methodology, progressing from an initial discussion of what MLPs are and how they might be used to an in-depth examination of technical factors affecting performance. The book can be used as a tool kit by readers interested in applying networks to specific problems, yet it also presents theory and references outlining the last ten years of MLP research.
