Book excerpt: Ideal Suggestion Through Mental Photography, A Restorative System For Home and Private Use Ideal suggestion through mental photography, a restorative system for home and private use, preceded by a study of the laws of mental healing by Henry Wood. This book is a reproduction of the original book published in 1890 and may have some imperfections such as marks or hand-written notes.SUGGESTION of some kind is the great mental motor; It may enter the human mind either in thought-waves projected by another mind or through the avenue of an outer sense. Hypnotic suggestion stirs the mind on the sensuous plane by the dominant imposition of the force of another personality. IDEAL SUGGESTION is the photographing of pure and perfect ideals directly upon the mind through the medium of the sense of sight. It is voluntary and free from any admixture of personality or imperfection. By the cultivated vigor of thought-concentration, it develops wonderful power and utility. The principles presented are unconventional and often misapprehended, but the dawn of their general recognition is at hand. If the author can add even a small contribution to the influences which will hasten their acceptance, he will find abundant recompense for this attempt at their popular interpretation. While they involve laws and forces which extend above and beyond the domain of the pure intellect, they are orderly and have scientific adaptability. The molding influence of the spiritual and internal man upon his external counterpart will soon receive merited appreciation. Causative forces lie hidden below the surface, and if common observation fails to cognize them it is due to the color-blindness of materialism. If the principles set forth embody living realities they should be sought for their own sake; if otherwise, they will soon come to naught. Knowledge of Truth is the highest human attainment. That part of this work which is devoted to Ideal Suggestion is naturally preceded by an outline of the general laws of mental healing. The attempt is made to present them in a simple manner, free from technicality and occult terminology. The author, though having had some unusual opportunities for gaining an understanding of this subject, is not a professional “healer," and does not practice nor give advice concerning the disease. His position is that of an independent conservative investigator and student of Truth. The conclusions formed are the result of careful and extended observation of the experiences of scores of persons, together with a study of the literature and philosophy of the subject, in addition to a personal experience of depth and intensity. It is not for a moment expected that Ideal Suggestion will, in all cases, displace regular mental treatment. But the better the whole subject is generally understood, the broader will be the field of activity for every good living teacher and healer. This system, though now presented as a formulated course of personal development for the first time (so far as the author is aware), has amazing possibilities. It points out in plain terms the road which if earnestly followed will lead to the quiet but effectual relief of many chronic ailments and nervous inharmonies which are so much in evidence in modern life. If one, to a great degree, can do this for himself and in his own home, by wholesome effort, the advantages are obvious. Book Synopsis The Ethics of Oneness by : Jeremy David Engels
Download or read book The Ethics of Oneness written by Jeremy David Engels and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2021-04-05 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in an era defined by a sense of separation, even in the midst of networked connectivity. As cultural climates sour and divisive political structures spread, we are left wondering about our ties to each other. Consequently, there is no better time than now to reconsider ideas of unity. In The Ethics of Oneness, Jeremy David Engels reads the Bhagavad Gita alongside the works of American thinkers Ralph Waldo Emerson and Walt Whitman. Drawing on this rich combination of traditions, Engels presents the notion that individuals are fundamentally interconnected in their shared divinity. In other words, everything is one. If the lessons of oneness are taken to heart, particularly as they were expressed and celebrated by Whitman, and the ethical challenges of oneness considered seriously, Engels thinks it is possible to counter the pervasive and problematic American ideals of hierarchy, exclusion, violence, and domination.
Book Synopsis Transforming Consciousness by : John Makeham
Download or read book Transforming Consciousness written by John Makeham and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-03-03 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yogacara is one of the most influential philosophical systems of Indian Buddhism. Competing traditions of Yogacara thought were first introduced into China during the sixth century. By the Yuan dynasty (1271-1368), however, key commentaries of this school had ceased being transmitted in China, and it was not until the end of the nineteenth century that a number of them were re-introduced from Japan where their transmission had been uninterrupted. Within a few short years Yogacara was being touted as a rival to the New Learning from the West, boasting not only organized, systematized thought and concepts, but also a superior means to establish verification. This book accomplishes three goals. The first is to explain why this Indian philosophical system proved to be so attractive to influential Chinese intellectuals at a particular moment in history. The second is to demonstrate how the revival of Yogacara thought informed Chinese responses to the challenges of modernity, in particular modern science and logic. The third goal is to highlight how Yogacara thought shaped a major current in modern Chinese philosophy: New Confucianism. Transforming Consciousness illustrates that an adequate understanding of New Confucian philosophy must include a proper grasp of Yogacara thought.

Book excerpt: Yoga classes and Zen meditation, New-Age retreats and nature mysticism—all are part of an ongoing religious experimentation that has surprisingly deep roots in American history. Tracing out the country’s Transcendentalist and cosmopolitan religious impulses over the last two centuries, Restless Souls explores America’s abiding romance with spirituality as religion’s better half. Now in its second edition, including a new preface, Leigh Eric Schmidt's fascinating book provides a rich account of how this open-road spirituality developed in American culture in the first place as well as a sweeping survey of the liberal religious movements that touted it and ensured its continued vitality.

Book Synopsis Biomedicine as a Contested Site by : Poonam Bala
Download or read book Biomedicine as a Contested Site written by Poonam Bala and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2008-10-16 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While literature on medicine and colonialism has increased rapidly in the past nearly two decades, this volume presents yet another way of looking at ideas of medicine, health, and disease. It portrays the role played by power in various ways in which biomedicine became a site of contested ventures_a site which saw an interplay of medicine, ruling ideologies, and resistance by indigenous populations. Ideas of disease and health range from control of infectious diseases and epidemics, medications and indigenous therapeutics, clinical medicine and surgery, to reproductive health, with the added dimension of medical pluralism and elites as enabling these interactions and processes. This book will be of interest to undergraduate and graduate students of history, sociology, anthropology, medicine, and public health. With essays on different regions around the world, it will serve as a guide to scholars and students in colonial studies, history of medicine, and world history.
