Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I was growing up, Sesame Street had only made it to the letter, "C." There were no purple dinosaurs on television either. The only prehistoric creatures we got to watch on the two channels we received were the ones that were chasing Raquel Welch around while she was dressed in that skimpy animal-hide costume of hers. Don't think that I'm complaining about this. Trust me, watching Raquel was far more educational. Our television choices were limited, and there were no personal computers or video games back then either. For years, I thought a joy stick was the switch that brought a big smile to my mother's face every time she used it to wear out my rear-end. Like Farts in a Whirlwindis a humorous look back at some of the things that made my mother have to grab that switch. This book is not a nostalgic walk down memory lane. It's more like trampling through the flower beds of my mind. Every time I tell someone about the things we did in Vienna, I always receive the same three responses. First, I get a look of total bewilderment, which is followed by three or four vigorous head shakes, and then I hear, "You should write a book about that " Well, that's what I've done, and I hope you have as much fun reading these stories as I had living and writing them. Tony Farley is a life-long resident of the Vienna area. He is a graduate of Louisiana Tech University, and the owner of Vienna Motors, which sits at the epicenter of most of the stories in his book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you ever feel like you’re missing out on your ideal life? You know, the perfect life we all envision for ourselves? Let’s face it: life is not for sissies. It seems we are always striving for the perfect, ideal life, but missing the mark (sometimes by a mile). I contend that our lives are overcomplicated by our own expectations. Relax! Take the wins and forget about the times things didn’t go perfectly. Look for the humor in those times when things didn’t quite make an “A” rating. I was never an “A” student anyway; how am I gonna start now? We don’t all have the time or desire to grow organic orange trees, freshly squeeze the juice in non-plastic bottles, and make granola bars from scratch from nuts you foraged in the woods, and wheat grown in your backyard to take for soccer snacks. Grab that forty pack of water bottles, hack up those store-bought oranges, grab boxes of granola bars (one without nuts of course), and hand them out proudly. If little Johnny’s mom snubs you because little Johnny can’t eat or drink anything that contains gluten, sugar, artificial—anything and certainly not oranges that come in a bag from Walmart as anything that has touched plastic might irritate his precious skin—then let Johnny’s mom bring the snacks for the rest of the season. You’re off the hook and the problem is no longer on your plate. Your “failure” to provide the correct snacks is actually a win for you. You deserve a sticker! I have complied some short stories from my own life that seemed like epic failures, and sometimes were, and yet the earth still turned. Looking back, I can laugh at all the bumps in road, failed attempts at perfection, and botched or forgotten plans. I know you will be able to relate in one story or another, so feel free to laugh at my mistakes. Really, it won’t hurt my feelings at all. Laugh it up! Oh, and one last thing, tell that unattainable ideal life to take a flying leap, and enjoy your real life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 New York Times Bestseller Over 10 million copies sold In this generation-defining self-help guide, a superstar blogger cuts through the crap to show us how to stop trying to be "positive" all the time so that we can truly become better, happier people. For decades, we’ve been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F**k positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let’s be honest, shit is f**ked and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn’t sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is—a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k is his antidote to the coddling, let’s-all-feel-good mindset that has infected American society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up. Manson makes the argument, backed both by academic research and well-timed poop jokes, that improving our lives hinges not on our ability to turn lemons into lemonade, but on learning to stomach lemons better. Human beings are flawed and limited—"not everybody can be extraordinary, there are winners and losers in society, and some of it is not fair or your fault." Manson advises us to get to know our limitations and accept them. Once we embrace our fears, faults, and uncertainties, once we stop running and avoiding and start confronting painful truths, we can begin to find the courage, perseverance, honesty, responsibility, curiosity, and forgiveness we seek. There are only so many things we can give a f**k about so we need to figure out which ones really matter, Manson makes clear. While money is nice, caring about what you do with your life is better, because true wealth is about experience. A much-needed grab-you-by-the-shoulders-and-look-you-in-the-eye moment of real-talk, filled with entertaining stories and profane, ruthless humor, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k is a refreshing slap for a generation to help them lead contented, grounded lives.

The book is an introduction to a five year on-going research on the African Women and Psychology of Oppression. The contents are mostly stories, beliefs and philosophies of African women. They are true experiences. Some of them are breathtaking; some are heartbreaking.

Book excerpt: Hiroshima is the story of six people—a clerk, a widowed seamstress, a physician, a Methodist minister, a young surgeon, and a German Catholic priest—who lived through the greatest single manmade disaster in history. In vivid and indelible prose, Pulitzer Prize–winner John Hersey traces the stories of these half-dozen individuals from 8:15 a.m. on August 6, 1945, when Hiroshima was destroyed by the first atomic bomb ever dropped on a city, through the hours and days that followed. Almost four decades after the original publication of this celebrated book, Hersey went back to Hiroshima in search of the people whose stories he had told, and his account of what he discovered is now the eloquent and moving final chapter of Hiroshima.

Book excerpt: From the creator of the popular website Ask a Manager and New York’s work-advice columnist comes a witty, practical guide to 200 difficult professional conversations—featuring all-new advice! There’s a reason Alison Green has been called “the Dear Abby of the work world.” Ten years as a workplace-advice columnist have taught her that people avoid awkward conversations in the office because they simply don’t know what to say. Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . [Alison Green’s] advice boils down to the idea that you should be professional (even when others are not) and that communicating in a straightforward manner with candor and kindness will get you far, no matter where you work.”—Booklist (starred review) “The author’s friendly, warm, no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read, and her advice can be widely applied to relationships in all areas of readers’ lives. Ideal for anyone new to the job market or new to management, or anyone hoping to improve their work experience.”—Library Journal (starred review) “I am a huge fan of Alison Green’s Ask a Manager column. This book is even better. It teaches us how to deal with many of the most vexing big and little problems in our workplaces—and to do so with grace, confidence, and a sense of humor.”—Robert Sutton, Stanford professor and author of The No Asshole Rule and The Asshole Survival Guide “Ask a Manager is the ultimate playbook for navigating the traditional workforce in a diplomatic but firm way.”—Erin Lowry, author of Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping By and Get Your Financial Life Together
