Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American architect Hugh Stubbins (1912-2006), who began his career as Walter Gropius's assistant at Harvard, saw his field as all-encompassing and his work as modest within it: "I think of architecture not as individual buildings but as the whole fabric of our physical environment. Architecture is the man-made world in its totality...It is seldom, if ever, that one can design the whole fabric." Any disappointment Stubbins felt with the human inability to oversee "the man-made world in its totality," he channeled into becoming one of the most important international architects of post-war Modernism. His soaring high-rises brought him fame worldwide. The angle-topped Citicorp building in New York remains a signature element of the city's skyline, and as late as the 1990s, (when he was in his eighties), Stubbins was working on the Landmark Tower in Yokohama--Japan's highest building. This monograph centers on another triumph, the swooping 1957 Kongresshalle in Berlin, which engaged the gears of architecture with those of history, bringing Modernism back to Germany. Fifties American Modernism in Berlin is the first detailed publication dedicated to Stubbins and his oeuvre.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boston's financial district is considered the heart of New England's banking and finance. It is a veritable overlay of sleek modern office buildings and elegant high-rise structures of the early twentieth century. In the center of this contemporary skyline is evidence of the financial district's long history. Boston's first skyscraper, the Boston Custom House tower, stands high from where it was built in 1915 on top of the original 1849 custom house building. Boston's Financial District chronicles the steady change from a romantic neighborhood to numerous banking and business houses. It was originally known as Old South End and was a residential site of elegant mansions designed by Charles Bulfinch and located on tree-lined squares and streets that emulated the aristocratic boroughs of London. The photographs in Boston's Financial District show evidence of the destruction wreaked by the Great Boston Fire of 1872 and the rebuilding of Boston's center of commerce. With its well-known banks and businesses, the financial district has witnessed some of the most monumental and influential historical changes in the city of Boston.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making Disability Modern: Design Histories brings together leading scholars from a range of disciplinary and national perspectives to examine how designed objects and spaces contributes to the meanings of ability and disability from the late 18th century to the present day, and in homes, offices, and schools to realms of national and international politics. The contributors reveal the social role of objects - particularly those designed for use by people with disabilities, such as walking sticks, wheelchairs, and prosthetic limbs - and consider the active role that makers, users and designers take to reshape the material environment into a usable world. But it also aims to make clear that definitions of disability-and ability-are often shaped by design.

Book excerpt: This history of skyscrapers examines how these tall buildings affected the cityscape and the people who worked in, lived in, and visited them. Much of the focus is rightly on the architects who had the vision to design and build America's skyscrapers, but attention is also given to the steelworkers who built them, the financiers who put up the money, and the daredevils who attempt to "conquer" them in some inexplicable pursuit of fame. The impact of the skyscraper on popular culture, particularly film and literature, is also explored.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "When you're in New York" the sculptor Louise Nevelson once said, "you're in perpetual resurrection." She might have said the same thing about St. Peter's Lutheran Church, set in the heart of midtown Manhattan. In the 1970s the church made a radical move, scrapping its neo-gothic building for a sleek modern structure in the shadow of a skyscraper. The transformation was not just architectural. Inside, Nevelson created a shimmering chapel, while over the years artists and designers such as Willem de Kooning, Kiki Smith, and Massimo and Lella Vignelli produced works for the sanctuary. This fusion of modern art, architecture, and design was complemented by an innovative jazz ministry, including funerals for Billy Strayhorn and John Coltrane, and performances by Duke Ellington and other jazz legends. For the first time, this volume examines the astounding cultural output of this single church. Just as importantly, the story of St. Peter's serves as a springboard for wider reflections on the challenges and possibilities which arise when religion and art intersect in the modern city. Working from a wide range of disciplines, including art history, theology, musicology, and cultural studies, a distinguished group of scholars demonstrate that this church at the center of New York City deserves an equally central place in contemporary scholarship.
