Book excerpt: A kaleidoscopic, fast-paced tour of Latin America from one of the Spanish-speaking world’s most outstanding writers. Lamenting not having more time to get to know each of the nineteen countries he visits after winning the prestigious Premio Alfaguara, Andrés Neuman begins to suspect that world travel consists mostly of “not seeing.” But then he realizes that the fleeting nature of his trip provides him with a unique opportunity: touring and comparing every country of Latin America in a single stroke. Neuman writes on the move, generating a kinetic work that is at once puckish and poetic, aphoristic and brimming with curiosity. Even so-called non-places—airports, hotels, taxis—are turned into powerful symbols full of meaning. A dual Argentine-Spanish citizen, he incisively explores cultural identity and nationality, immigration and globalization, history and language, and turbulent current events. Above all, Neuman investigates the artistic lifeblood of Latin America, tackling with gusto not only literary heavyweights such as Bolaño, Vargas Llosa, Lorca, and Galeano, but also an emerging generation of authors and filmmakers whose impact is now making ripples worldwide. Eye-opening and charmingly offbeat, How to Travel without Seeing: Dispatches from the New Latin America is essential reading for anyone interested in the past, present, and future of the Americas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air Travel Fiction and Film: Cloud People explores how, over the past four decades, fiction and film have transformed our perceptions and representations of contemporary air travel. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, the book provides a comprehensive analysis of a wide range of international cultural productions, and elucidates the paradigms and narratives that constitute our current imaginary of air mobility. Erica Durante advances the hypothesis that fiction and film have converted the Airworld—the world of airplanes and airport infrastructures—into a pivotal anthropological place that is endowed with social significance and identity, suggesting that the assimilation of the sky into our cultural imaginary and lifestyle has metamorphosed human society into “Cloud People.” In its examination of the representations of air travel as an epicenter of today’s world, the book not only illustrates a novel perspective on contemporary fiction, but fills an important gap in the study of globalization within literary and film studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a not-so-brief absence from South America, I returned and picked-up exactly where I had left off, exactly where I’d begun originally: in smoggy Lima. Only this second time, I angled north: for the equator. The north of Peru is strikingly different from the south and yet again, like once before, I struck-up the most interesting acquaintanceships in a Plaza de Armas. Ecuador came next: there I discovered the whole continent in miniature, but nothing except tourist gimmicks to delay me. I crossed the next border with rare trepidation because the land of coffee, cartels, and cocaine -Colombia- was enjoying such an unsavory reputation. But it proved one of the most extraordinary countries that I've ever set-foot-in. My heart had never felt so heavy as when I took the first step into Venezuela. There I could have lingered longer, visited more places, but a strike paralyzed the cities and it had seemed prudent to leave while I could. Panama: getting in was a lot more exciting than being in. Nicaragua: tiny islands half-lost far-off at sea. Honduras: good roads and donuts. El Salvador: a tragic country whose people have suffered through everything yet refuse to give-in to despair. Guatemala, everybody’s favorite corner of Latin American: Antigua, Chichicastenango and El Mirador. Big Mama on Caye Culker, Belize. Mexico: too many kilometers on too many buses in too few days. Travelogue02 swings through every country south of the Rio Grande, eighteen in all, except the Guianas.    The author is nobody special — he’s just of a new breed of travel writers. And his Travelogues are for a new breed of readers — normal contemporary sorts of people like and my neighbor Tom, feeding their curiosity for curiosity’s sake, taking armchair voyages through countries that until a few years ago were virtually unknown to the outside word. While bookshop shelves tend to sag under the weight of stories about places, not journeys, the latter are far more fascinating. Few books today capture the essence of what it is like to travel. Having established himself with the original bold “what’s it really like Out There” anthology, the author does exactly that. Each Travelogue offers its reader more than the old tired travel diary. Just like each one of the author’s trips turned out most unusual, these books —too— are out of the ordinary. They’re collections of short stories, each capturing a particular moment: some are funny, some emotional, some suspenseful, some downright silly... and each one is very different from every other. They are snapshots of people and places and adventures that had been recorded in words rather than by multicolored pixels of a digital point-and-shoot. What makes them unreal is that all these stories are 100% true... Seriously, you couldn't make this stuff up even if you wanted to. None of it is this normal cut-and-dry stuff. Every story offers a fresh insight, a totally different perspective. On the beaten path... and off of it, against the backdrop of the exotic, anything can happen: and it usually does. More often than not, these stories are set in villages kilometers apart, but there’s never telling what might happen next. The author doesn't care where the journey might take him — it’s all about the experience of being Out There. He’s simply following his passion for discovering and exploring. For Travelogues’ readers, the books are a jaunt into the unknown. It’s the journey and not the destination that matters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is Latin America, after all? While histories of the "other" Americas often link disparate histories through revolutionary or tragic narratives, Latin America since Independence begins with the assumption that our efforts to imagine a common past for nearly thirty countries are deeply problematic. Without losing sight of chronology or regional trends, this text offers glimpses of the Latin American past through carefully selected stories. Each chapter introduces students to a specific historical issue, which in turn raises questions about the history of the Americas as a whole. Key themes include: Race and Citizenship Inequality and Economic Development Politics and Rights Social and Cultural Movements Globalization Violence and Civil Society The short, thematic chapters are bolstered by the inclusion of relevant primary documents – many translated for the first time – including advertisements and posters, song lyrics, political speeches, government documents, and more. Each chapter also includes timelines highlighting important dates and suggestions for further reading. Richly informative and highly readable, Latin America since Independence provides compelling accounts of this region’s past and present. This second edition brings the story up to the present, with revised chapters, new primary documents and images, and a new ‘At A Glance’ feature that uses a selection of maps and tables to illuminate key issues like the economy, the environment, and demographics. Book excerpt: This fascinating collection of essays and articles shows how Latin Americans travels and residency abroad helped them re-examine their own origins and perceptions of their homeland. Latin Americans traveled both purposefully and frequently in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Strange Pilgrimages reveals their experiences in Europe and the United States, and explores their power to shape opinions and bring outside influence back to Latin America. This new book analyzes Latin Americans; longstanding attraction to and interest in other cultures as barometers of their own progress. In addition, Strange Pilgrimages examines the invention of tradition, cultural practice, and identity formation among nation-states. A combination of articles and primary sources provides readers with both informed analysis of the experiences of Latin American travellers and entertaining first-hand accounts from the travellers and exiles themselves. These travellers were a diverse group that included artists, diplomats, political exiles, athletes, dilettantes, and more. Readers will learn that Latin Americans came to understand their homelands better and in fact helped to define their own countries; identities through their experiences traveling and living abroad.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is divided in three sections, which the author considered very important to improve future relations with Latin-American countries and the large Latino community in the United States. The first one is how the two cultures view each other. The second one is an analysis of the Latino community in the USA. And finally, he offers some advice for Americans traveling to the Latin countries. Not less important is the standing of the Latino community inside the USA, their concerns and their sensitivities to social and political matters. This is a book for everyone from the common person, to the ambassador going to serve in a Latin country, to the businessperson serving Latin-American communities, to travelers to these countries, and politicians trying to understand where they have failed to connect with the growing Latino groups.
