Book excerpt: This thesis compares the various distribution channels available to the industrial manufacturer to bring a product to market. The problem that was solved was to find the best method of distributing Programmable Controllers in the Connecticut Area for the Square D Company. I examined the present method of distributing this product and compared the pro's and con's of using a Direct Sales Force vs. Manufacturer's Representatives vs. Distributors or Systems Integrators. The present dilemma is that the computer product described is not achieving the market share it should and various distribution methods have been unsuccessful. The methods used to solve this problem were: 1. Research the available types of distribution channels. 2. Compare the advantages and disadvantages of these channels. 3. Review where our products fit on the product life cycle curves. 4. Analyze the present method of distribution and other alternatives available. What was accomplished in this paper was finding the best method of distributing programmable controllers in Connecticut. The conclusion divides the programmable controller product line into two distinct stages in their product life cycle with appropriate marketing channels selected depending upon the value added by that channel and the market growth rate that could be expected. The recommendation for management section on pages 72 through 77 details a plan to increase the market share by utilizing more marketing channels to increase the breadth of distribution and to consider selling these new channels on a direct basis to decrease the length of our distribution channel making Square D more competitive.

Book excerpt: Getting Multi-Channel Distribution Right provides a comprehensive treatment of modern distribution strategy that is analytically solid, clearly written, and relevant for managers as well as MBA and executive MBA students, and the professors who train them. It covers concepts, metrics, tools, and strategic frameworks for managing distribution in physical and digital channels. Focusing on the challenges of managing multiple channels of distribution in an evolving marketplace—rather than the process of designing a distribution channel from scratch—it leans more heavily on metrics and tools and incorporates perspectives from academic research, as well as in-depth case studies from marketing and general management practice. Introduces an organizing framework of pull and push marketing for how suppliers work together with their channel partners. Integrates across physical and digital, independent and company-owned, routes to market. Maps the functions of traditional and newer intermediaries in the channel ecosystem and identifies the root causes of conflict between them. Provides tools and frameworks for how much distribution coverage is required and where. Shows how product line, pricing, trade promotions, and other channel incentives can help to coordinate multiple channels and manage conflict. Illustrates how push and pull metrics can be combined into valuable dashboards for identifying positive feedback opportunities and sustaining the channel partnership. With the help of Getting Multi-Channel Distribution Right you’ll discover how to successfully develop, execute, and adapt distribution strategy to the evolving marketplace.

Book excerpt: Marketing Management challenges the traditional view of marketing as a function, considering it instead as a series of processes pervading the entire organization and involving most personnel as part-time marketers. The authors argue that every company or institution must manage four main processes: strategic positioning, market intelligence, value creation and value generation. Adopting a global approach, the book focuses on value creation and introduces students to the tools of the marketing mix in a process oriented manner. New to this edition: - New coverage of technology applications and developments and B2B marketing - Consistent focus on value creation throughout - More examples to illustrate theory - Enhanced pedagogy including long case studies and exercises in every chapter With its unique approach and international coverage, this book is essential reading for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students of Marketing Management and will also appeal to MBA and other post-experience students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food loss is a serious issue in the United States. It affects all aspects of the supply chain, from farmers to consumers. While much is already known about loss at the consumer level, our understanding of the amount of food that never makes it to this stage is more limited. The Economics of Food Loss in the Produce Industry focuses on the economics of food loss as they apply to on-farm produce production, and the losses that are experienced early. The book both analyses current food loss literature and presents new empirical research. It draws lessons from those who have encountered these issues by focusing on how past regional or national estimates of food loss have been conducted with varying degrees of success. It includes chapters on several themes: understanding food loss from an economic perspective; efforts to measure food loss; case studies across commodities within the produce industry; and economic risks and opportunities. The commodity case studies provide detailed discussion of factors impacting changes in loss levels within the produce industry, and a wealth of knowledge on strategies and contexts is developed. The book concludes by identifying critical knowledge gaps and establishing future priorities. This book serves as an essential reference guide for academics, researchers, students, legislative liaisons, non-profit associations, and think tank groups in agriculture and agricultural economics.

From scribble-on-the-napkin to product-on-the market, The Independent Inventor's Handbook explains everything a potential inventor needs to know and the tools he or she needs to use to take a raw concept and turn it into reality. Written by Louis J. Foreman, creator of the PBS series Everyday Edisons and a holder of multiple patents, together with patent attorney Jill Gilbert Welytok, here's a book that speaks directly to the inventive American—the entrepreneur, the tinkerer, the dreamer, the basement scientist, the stay-at-home mom who figures out how to do it better. (over one million of them file patents each year.) Here is everything a future inventor needs: Understanding the difference between a good idea and a marketable idea. Why investing too much money at the outset can sink you. The downside of design patents, and how best to file an application for a utility patent. Surveys, online test runs, and other strategies for market research on a tight budget. Plus the effective pitch (hint: never say your target audience is "everyone"), questions to ask a prospective manufacturer, 14 licensing land mines to avoid, "looks-like" versus "works-like" prototypes, Ten Things Not to Tell a Venture Capitalist, and how to protect your invention once it's on the market. Appendices include a glossary of legal, manufacturing, and marketing terms, a sample nondisclosure agreement, and a patent application, deconstructed.
