Book excerpt: Quincy, Illinois, is located on the Mississippi River about 20 miles north of Hannibal, Missouri, and 100 miles west of Springfield, the state capital. Both Quincy and the county in which it lies, Adams, were named for President John Quincy Adams. In 1822, a man named John Wood built a cabin at the foot of what would later become Delaware Street, near the Mississippi River. As more people came, the village grew eastward from that spot. Many German and Irish immigrants came to Quincy, along with pioneers moving from Kentucky and Virginia. These settlers were lured to the area by reports of the lush land called the "Jewel of the West," which was later called "The Gem City." Industrialists came from New York and other Eastern states and built many of the stately homes on Maine Street and the adjacent streets. Early industry in Quincy included pork packing, tobacco processing, paper making, stove making, carriage making, the ice industry, and lumberyards.

Book excerpt: The book examines the impact of the Civil War on Quincy, Illinois. Quincy, in 1860 the third largest city in Illinois, is situated on the Mississippi River across from slave state Missouri, thus exposing it to the uncertainties and potential strife of a border region. Quincy entered the war with a rich tradition of providing influential political leaders. In 1860 Quincyan John Wood was the governor of Illinois and the Democrat Stephen A. Douglas, during his first two congressional terms, recognized Quincy as his home district. Quincy had the distinction of providing two U.S. Senators during the war, Orville Hickman Browning and William Richardson. Quincy served as a muster and training site for both white and black troops. Some of the latter served for Massachusetts, and the 29th U.S. Colored regiment trained at Quincy and, after moving out, fought the Battle of the Crater at Petersburg, Virginia in July 1864. In addition, Quincy served as a port of entry for blacks fleeing the South in the aftermath of the Emancipation Proclamation. The city experienced discord related to the influx, but also a measure of altruism appeared among some dedicated to helping blacks make the challenging transition from slavery. Women of Quincy banded together in three organizations designed to serve the needs of Soldiers and their dependents. Economically, the city experienced an early downturn, but rebounded strongly to achieve growth during the war. Quincy and its hinterland in northeast Missouri strove mightily to restrain friction so as to protect the economic vitality of the region.

BOUT January, 1869--over ten years ago--through the courtesy of the Quincy Whig, there was published short sketches of bench and bar, written by the author of this book, embracing deceased judges and lawyers who had resided here or who had appeared in the Adams County Circuit Court since the beginning. Those old sketches embraced the following judges: Richard M. Young, James H. Ralston, Jesse B. Thomas, Norman H. Purple, William A. Minshall, and Peter Lott. And lawyers: Archibald Williams, James W.Whitney, Robert R.Williams, William A. Richardson, George W. P. Maxwell, Charles Gilman, Philo A. Goodwin, Ab ram Jonas, Edward D. Baker, N. Bushnell, Josiah Lamborn, James A. McDougal, Cyrus Walker, Sidney Little, Murray McConnell, William Darling, Jacoby Hallack, Isaac M. Grover, George C. Dixon, Robert S. Blackwell, and a few others, all then dead. To complete the series, the following sketches embrace those who have died since 1869. All these sketches will now be at the command of our local lawyers should they deem them of sufficient special value to be preserved in pamphlet form. This chapter also contains "a last word," and some old-time poetry heretofore published, as also some concluding matter in correction. EBENEZER MOORE. This gentleman was for a time a law partner of the writer. He was the first Mayor of our city, a native of the State of Maine and a well read lawyer and gentleman. He never claimed to be or was among our greatest lawyers, but was a very reliable and safe man, modest, reserved, honest and true. After residing here for many years he removed to Washington City, where he was for a time employed in one of the government departments, dying suddenly of cholera, I believe, in the year 1867. HORACE S. COOLEY....

Book excerpt: Situated among the forests and lakes of northeastern California where the Sierra Nevada and Cascade mountain ranges meet, the town of Quincy is both picturesque and steeped in local history-from the Maidu Native Americans who first lived in the American Valley now called Quincy to the flood of people who came in the mid-1800s searching for gold. Quincy was born when Hugh J. Bradley, who helped organized Plumas County in 1854, laid out the town and named it after his home city in Illinois. Now the county's seat of government, Quincy boasts many attractive downtown buildings that have become the focus of the community's historic preservation and restoration efforts.
