During 1812, terrible scenes of shipwreck occurred on the ocean and along the coasts of New Jersey and Long Island, and the great loss of life that occurred at each wreck, appealing to his active sympathies, determined him to devote his future life to the task of inventing and devising some character or style Of boat that would prove useful in saving human life in cases of shipwreck.
