The success of his first application of buoyancy, gave him' confidence to continue experiments until he reached a high degree of perfection, resulting in the invention of a less bulky, and therefore more buoyant power, and also the application of a material combining the largest amount of strength and resisting power, combined with elasticity, and the minimum Of weight. During 1812, terrible scenes of shipwreck occurred on the ocean and along the coasts of New Jersey and Long Island, and the great loss of life that occurred at each wreck, appealing to his active sympathies, determined him to devote his future life to the task of inventing and devising some character or style Of boat that would prove useful in saving human life in cases of shipwreck.
