Book excerpt: Macomb Township is centrally located on the middle and north branches of the Clinton River, a location that has provided a fertile environment for the agriculture that has been formative in its development. After separating from its neighboring town Chesterfield in 1842, the area attracted German Lutheran settlers with its level land and rich soil. Soon, much of the land would be worked and settled by farmers. By the 1980s, many farmers sold off their land to developers, and subdivisions bearing the names of those previous farms took the space that crops had once filled. Over the years, Macomb Township has become one of the fastest growing communities in the county. Good schools and beautiful parks have been added along with a new township complex, a recreational center, and a public library. Created by settlers wanting greater connection to neighbors and friends, Macomb Township continues to offer that same type of close-knit community.

Book excerpt: In the bitter cold of 1985, two buddies embark on a hunting trip from suburban Detroit to rural Michigan, unaware they would soon become the hunted. Darker than Night tells the chilling true story of the mystery that haunted a community and baffled the police for two decades. The eerie silence surrounding their sudden disappearance is broken after nearly two decades when a relentless investigator inspires a terrified witness to break her silence. The witness narrates a haunting scene that had unfolded years back, pointing fingers at the prime suspects–the Duvall brothers. With no bodies unearthed, the justice system is riveted by the startling revelations during an electrifying trial in 2003. The brothers, Raymond and Donald Duvall, had bragged about the murders, evocatively explaining how they dismembered their victims and fed them to pigs. Despite the shocking confession, the case holds its ground purely on a single witness's account, taking the courtroom through a labyrinth of dark secrets and sinister acts. This gripping thriller presents a vivid tale of crime that reveals the devastating power of evil.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Judge Christian Clemens founded Mount Clemens in 1818 and established it as the seat of justice for Macomb County when Michigan was yet a territory. While the town prospered on the strength of its strategic location on the Clinton River and proximity to Lake St. Clair, it was the mineral water beneath the citizens' feet that would propel Mount Clemens to national prominence as a health resort. As it grew, the "Bath City of America" attracted the likes of stage actress Sadie Hasson, the Nelson family of circus performers, and baseball all-star Vic Wertz. Numerous visitors who came seeking a cure--or to find work in the hospitality industry--stayed to call Mount Clemens home, adding their own peculiar brand of warp and weft to the town's rich historical tapestry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Lakes are the largest collection of fresh surface water on earth, and more than 40 million Americans and Canadians live in their basin. Will we divert water from the Great Lakes, causing them to end up like Central Asia's Aral Sea, which has lost 90 percent of its surface area and 75 percent of its volume since 1960? Or will we come to see that unregulated water withdrawals are ultimately catastrophic? Peter Annin writes a fast-paced account of the people and stories behind these upcoming battles. Destined to be the definitive story for the general public as well as policymakers, The Great Lakes Water Wars is a balanced, comprehensive look behind the scenes at the conflicts and compromises that are the past-and future-of this unique resource.

Book excerpt: In the quest of identifying Civil War soldiers and sailors buried in cemeteries in Macomb County, Michigan, the stories of several veterans aroused the interest of the authors. To that end, extensive research began and culminated in the stories of the six veterans noted in this work. The stories begin with two cavalry sergeants, progress through the man widely credited with shooting Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart, then chronicling the prison experiences of an infantry officer, highlighting the career of the only Civil War general buried in Macomb County, and culminates with the military career of an 1812 soldier who served his country into the beginning of the Civil War. The individuals presented in this book were not heroes. They were not much different than others who served in this conflict. They might be considered victims of the circumstances in which they found themselves. They certainly displayed fortitude and resolve in performing the duties given them and assumed responsibility for the actions they undertook. They should be viewed as examples of what many of the participants in this conflict did, however difficult their circumstances. We salute them all.
