In this study, simulated high-level waste glass-beads (76 to 68 glass)l doped with technetium, uranium, neptunium, plutonium, curium and americium were leached in deionized water, Waste Isolation Pilot Plant salt brine B, and 0.03M sodium bicarbonate solution at 150 and 250°C for 2, 4, 8, 16, and 32 days. The resulting solutions were analyzed for several nonradioactive glass components and for the radioactive dopants. The glass exhibited incongruent leaching behavior, i.e., the normalized releases (g-glass/m2) based on the different elements spanned four orders of magnitude. Normalized releases based on boron, molybdenum, sodium, cesium, silicon, and technetium were the same within a factor of three. Most of the nonradioactive components of the glass were released more to the salt brine than to the other two solutions. However, silicon, boron, molybdenum, technetium, and the actinides had their lowest releases in the salt brine. Reaction-layer thickness on the glass surface and weight losses of the glass beads were also smallest in the brine solution. Actinide releases were highest in the sodium bicarbonate solution. Calcium, strontium and barium releases decreased with time and temperature; the releases of most other elements increased with time and temperature. Solubility appears to be limiting the release of most elements. The leachate pH is controlled by chemical species within the original leachant and by species released as the glass leached. Carbonate ion complexes with some elements including uranium, effectively increasing their release. The more soluble elements including sodium, boron, molybdenum and technetium provide an indication of the actual rate of reaction between the glass and water.

One is a modification of the standard IAEA method and the other is a one-pass method in which fresh leachant solution is pumped over the sample at a controlled flow rate and temperature. For times up to 3 days, there is close agreement between results from the two methods at 25.0C. Leach rates from the one-pass method show no correlation with flow rate at 25.0C, but at 75.0C leach rate increases with flow rate. Np-237 rates at 75.0C are greater than those at 25.0C, but 239Pu rates at 75.0C are less than or equal to those at 25.0C. Resorption of 239Pu associated with (SiO2)(subscript x) polymers at high temperature is suggested as a possible cause.

The factorial experimental design uses several combinations of solution composition and flow rate, and two temperatures, 25 and 75°C. The 25°C results are compared with those from a modified IAEA procedure. At 25°C, leach rates decrease with time. Agreement between results from the single-pass and modified IAEA methods is fair with WIPP brine leachant, good with NaHCO3, and good with distilled H2O. Leach rates are approximately independent of flow rates at room temperature, but increase with flow rates at high temperature. Rates for 237Np increase with temperature, but those for 239Pu either decrease or do not change with temperature. 7 figures.

Book excerpt: In order to validate predictive models of the very long-term processes which affect the performance of radioactive waste repositories, there has been an increased interest in the information and understanding which can be obtained from studying similar mechanisms in natural systems. These "natural analogues", as they are known in the jargon of waste management, have been studied sporadically for many years, but there has been a considerable rejuvenation of interest in the last four years, possibly owing to the fact that performance assessment methodolo gy is gradually maturing to the point where it needs the kind of support which analogues can offer. Since 1982, the Commission of the European Communities has been involved in specific work on natural analogues in the framework of its activities on radioactive waste management, principally within the MIRAGE project which concerns migration of radionuclides in the geosphere. As a consequence, the Commission took the initiative, in 1985, of establish ing a Natural Analogue Working Group (NAWG) whose members can benefit from the overall expertise available for managing their own natural analogue research programmes. In this group, modeller' s requirements and the results of field research are exchanged at regular intervals. A number of wide-ranging investigation programmes, both on national and international scales. are currently underway or being initiated, and several of these have been discussed recently at the NAWG.

Book excerpt: A laboratory leaching test has been performed as part of a project to evaluate the suitability of tuff rocks at Yucca Mountain, Nevada, as a site for a high-level nuclear waste repository. Glass samples were placed in water inside tuff vessels, and then the tuff vessels were placed in water inside Teflon containers. Glass-component leach rates and migration through the tuff were measured for samples of the ATM-8 actinide glass, which is a PNL 76-68 based glass doped with low levels of 99Tc, 237Np, 238U, and 239Pu to simulate wastes. Disc samples of this glass were leached at 90°C for 30, 90, and 183 days inside tuff vessels using a natural groundwater (J-13 well-water) as the leachant. At the end of each leaching interval, the J-13 water present inside and outside the rock vessel was analyzed for glass components in solutions. Boron, molybdenum, and technetium appear to migrate through the rock at rates that depend on the porosity of each vessel and the time. The actinide elements were found only in the inner leachate. Normalized elemental mass loss values for boron, molybdenum, and technetium were calculated using concentrations of the inner and outer leachates and assuming a negligible retention on the rock. The maximum normalized release was 2.3 g/m2 for technetium. Boron, molybdenum, technetium, and neptunium were released linearly with respect to each other, with boron and molybdenum released at about 85% of the technetium rate, and neptunium at 5 to 10% of the technetium rate. Plutonium was found at low levels in the inner leachate but was strongly sorbed on the steel and Teflon supports. Neptunium was sorbed to a lesser extent. 8 refs., 6 figs., 6 tabs.

Book excerpt: A series of static leach tests was conducted using glasses developed for vitrifying tank wastes at the Savannah River Site to monitor the disposition of actinide elements upon corrosion of the glasses. In these tests, glasses produced from SRL 131 and SRL 202 frits were corroded at 90°C in a tuff groundwater. Tests were conducted using crushed glass at different glass surface area-to-solution volume (S/V) ratios to assess the effect of the S/V on the solution chemistry, the corrosion of the glass, and the disposition of actinide elements. Observations regarding the effects of the S/V on the solution chemistry and the corrosion of the glass matrix have been reported previously. This paper highlights the solution analyses performed to assess how the S/V used in a static leach test affects the disposition of actinide elements between fractions that are suspended or dissolved in the solution, and retained by the altered glass or other materials.
