Book excerpt: Heritage Studies 1 Student Text is a colorful, easy-to-read presentation of social studies that integrates civics, culture, economics, geography, and history. Beginning with the framework of God's redemptive plan, the book includes an age-appropriate study of civics and government and then covers United States history from Native Americans to the Plymouth Colony -- all from the perspective of a Christian worldview. The final chapter contrasts the past and the present, noting changes that have taken place in the way we live. Each chapter includes a poem, eye-catching artwork, maps, graphs, and photos, quick-check questions, and an extended hands-on activity to enhance learning. - Publisher.

For example, deep conceptual understanding, the importance of student intellectual engagement, and the precise use of language have always been at the foundation of the Framework for Teaching, but are more clearly articulated in this edition. The language has been tightened to increase ease of use and accuracy in assessment. Many of the enhancements to the Framework are located in the possible examples, rather than in the rubric language or critical attributes for each level of performance.

Book Synopsis The Next Phase in Heritage Language Studies: Methodological Considerations and Advancements by : Fatih Bayram
Download or read book The Next Phase in Heritage Language Studies: Methodological Considerations and Advancements written by Fatih Bayram and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-03-27 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past three decades studies investigating heritage speaker (HS) linguistic competencies have shown, time and again that, despite being L1 or 2L1 native speakers of their home language(s), HS outcomes display variation across a wide spectrum of differences as compared to each other, other types of bilinguals as well as their monolingual peers. Studies have traditionally used—mostly behavioral—methodologies rooted in adjacent established fields (e.g., L1 acquisition, adult L2 acquisition) offering, in addition to documenting and describing HS performance, important insights for linguistic theory and challenges related to (home/minority) language maintenance, contact, policy and more. A birds-eye view makes it clear that the methodologies one uses to tap into HSs’ linguistic knowledge areas, if not more, are important than the phenomena under investigation, especially in light of how their unique experiences with their heritage and other languages are present across a continuum.

Book Synopsis Chinese-Heritage Students in North American Schools by : Wen Ma
Download or read book Chinese-Heritage Students in North American Schools written by Wen Ma and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-02 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive look at Chinese-heritage students’ academic, sociocultural, and emotional development in the public schools examines pertinent educational theories; complex (even inconvenient) realities; learning practices in and outside of schools; and social, cultural, and linguistic complications in their academic lives across diverse settings, homes, and communities. Chinese-heritage students are by far the largest ethnic group among Asian American and Asian Canadian communities, but it is difficult to sort out their academic performance because NAEP and most state/province databases lump all Asian students’ results together. To better understand why Chinese-heritage learners range from academic role models to problematic students in need of help, it is important to understand their hearts and minds beyond test scores. This book is distinctive in building this understanding by addressing the range of issues related to Chinese-heritage K-12 students’ languages, cultures, identities, academic achievements, and challenges across North American schools.
