Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CPM-M4 tool steel is a commonly used knife blade material due to its high strength and wear resistance. The goal of this thesis is to understand how heat treatment parameters affect blade performance and microstructure. Five heat treatments were applied to CPM-M4 steel by varying austenitizing and tempering temperatures. The microstructures were examined by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and limited amounts of energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The carbide fraction, size, count, spacing and chemistry were characterized from the microstructural analysis. Blade performance was examined by hardness, 3-Point bend, impact, and CATRA (edgeretention) testing. The results show that the austenitizing temperature is a significant factor that affects all mechanical properties tested. The max load in 3-Point bend test increases with the carbides fraction that can be maximized by controlling austenitizing temperature. Both austenitizing temperature and tempering temperature have significant effects on the hardness. As for the impact performance, the impact toughness increases with the carbides density. Additionally, we can achieve comparatively high impact toughness in low austenitizing temperature without decreasing hardness through lowering the tempering teperature, because tempering temperature has no significant effect on impact toughness. The edge retention of CPM-M4 steel relates to its hardness. Harder materials can provide a better edge retention for knife blade.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Variations in heat treatments have significant effects on the microstructure of tool steels. For CPM-M4 tool steel, the changes in microstructure and mechanical properties were observed based off of variations in temperature. Five heat treatments with constant exposure time and variable austenitizing and tempering temperatures were performed on samples of the CPM-M4. During heat treatment, tool steels undergo microstructural transformations where carbides made up of primary alloying elements are created and grown while the surrounding matrix of material undergoes phase transformations. Using SEM, EBSD, and ImageJ analysis software, the phase fractions of the final microstructure for each treatment was quantified and compared. Changes in mechanical properties were assessed by macro- hardness and nanoindentation. Based on the data, a maximum hardness was achieved for samples with an austenization temperature of 2200°F and a tempering temperature of 925°F. This highest hardness did not correspond to the highest fraction of the hardened carbide and martensite phases. This is due to interactions between both the phases present in the matrix as well as the size and distribution of the carbides.

Book excerpt: This is study on tool steel pacification and heat-treatment for all type of wear resistance steel and specially our D3 steel. Supported with value review. This research “theoretical and experimental” in Effect of Heat-treatment “hardening temperature, tempering temperature, and cooling rate“ in the Mechanical property “Hardness”, and Microstructure transformation on Tool Steel, all type of wear resistance steel, and specially D3 steel. The research study heat-treatment for two pieces of D3 die steel "Working at cone pulleys for nail manufacture" to modify there mechanical properties. The classification its type, properties and set on condition effect on it was discussed. Two set of experiments were done one to determine the effect of austenitization temperature and tempering temperature on the mechanical properties "hardness" and another "the basic one" to discuses improving its mechanical properties from view of microstructure transformations "type, amount, and properties" for each heat-treatment stage. This study was APPROVED as my BS graduate project from Metallurgy Engineering Collage, Cairo University 2001, and published after addition in experimental review at 2018.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heat Treatment of Tool Steel: An Illustrated Description of the Physical Changes and Properties Induced in Tool Steel by Heating and Cooling Operations The following pages are intended to be helpful to the trained artisan and foreman, whose business it is to produce steel objects and tools for various purposes. Also to the merchant, manufacturer's representative, and other official, who frequently meet complaints which they would like to fathom, and are often called upon to assume a knowledge of the properties of steel somewhat out of proportion to the opportunities afforded by the daily routine of their business. In the steel trade, perhaps more than in any other trade, the consumer looks to the manufacturer to furnish instructions about all materials and processes relating to the properties of steel. This state of affairs arose quite naturally at a time when the means at our disposal for investigating and classifying tool steels were confined exclusively to an examination of the fractured ingot or bar. This kind of examination the steelmaker developed into an art, which he practised with wonderful proficiency and accuracy long before the science of analytical chemistry was competent to replace his "tempers" by percentages of carbon. From the combined experience of the maker and user of steel there arose eventually a system whereby material of approximately the same kind was supplied, from whatever source it came, for the same purpose. As this system was based on appearances intelligible only to the competent steelmaker, it was inevitable that he should, in most cases, become arbiter and judge as to defects and remedies incidental to the heat treatment of tools. Because two rather different trades overlap in this process - welding and toolmaking, the materials and techniques involved have tended to be obscured. For many years, toolmakers and tool users have had to rely on the small number of specialist welders who do understand exactly what welding repair involves and have the skills to carry it out.Understanding the technical side of tool steels is frequently a problem for welders and understanding the practical side of welding can be a problem for machinists. This book has been written so that specialists from both sides can get to grips with the techniques and procedures involved. The Handbook of mould, tool and die repair welding is designed to save companies time and money by: Acting as a training aid so that repairs can be carried out in-house Reducing the need to send work out and the costs involved Reducing the production time lost when repairs are required Providing clear diagrams and a user-friendly style to make the techniques easily understood It is an essential resource for Tool Room Managers and Foremen as well as maintenance and repair welding specialists. It starts from simple concepts--beginning at the level of high-school chemistry classes--and building to more complex concepts involved in heat treatment of most all types of steel as well as cast iron. It was inspired by the author when working with practicing bladesmiths for more than 15 years. Most chapters in the book contain a summary at the end. These summaries provide a short review of the contents of each chapter. This book is THE practical primer on steel metallurgy for those who heat, forge, or machine steel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If a substance is repeatedly subdivided, the result is what are known as "microscopic particles". These particles are distinguished from the solid mass which they originally formed by the size of the surface area per unit weight. This simple difference holds true down to a certain lower size limit, and when this limit is exceeded, a new state of matter is reached, in which the behavior of the particles is quite different to that of the original solid. Particles in this state are termed "superfine particles", and are distinct from ordinary particles. The size of the superfine particles, that is to say the size limit below which particle behavior is completely different from the behavior of the original solid, varies a good deal depending on the physical properties of the substance in question. Properties such as magnetism and electrical resistance are closely related to the internal structural properties of the particles themselves, such as the magnetization processes of their respective magnetic domains, and the mean free path of charged bodies. This internal structure therefore limits the size of the superfine particles. In ceramic processing, on the other hand, the surface area of the particles themselves becomes an even more important factor than their internal structure. In this case, the size of the superfine particles is determined by the interaction between water and solvents on the surface of the particles.
