Book excerpt: KaziKidz Teaching Material for Foundation Phase, Grades 1-3: A short version of the teaching resources for Life Skills Teachers. Being physically active contributes to the development of physical competence and fitness as well as to the child’s cognitive, social and emotional development. Physical Education (PE) plays a crucial role in the holistic education and development of children. Yet, in many schools from marginalised neighbourhoods, PE is not given the recognition and importance it deserves. For this reason, the KaziKidz teaching material was developed for teachers, principals, school staff or for those responsible from the Department of Education, in order to contribute to and support the quality of PE in these schools. The exercises and games in this book are easy to use, do not require a lot of material and are met with much joy and enthusiasm by the learners. The teaching material was developed by a team of South African and Swiss experts. The lessons meet the requirements of the South African Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) and are supported by the Department of Education, Eastern Cape. We hope you enjoy the lessons!

Book excerpt: This textbook offers a concise, yet comprehensive account of human nutrition, food and nutrition-related health problems, based on the curricula of top universities around the globe. Nutrition is a multidisciplinary science, and as such, the book discusses various aspects of physiology, biochemistry, pathology, immunology, medicine, food science, and other fields related to nutrition, it focuses on the role of nutrition in the maintenance of health. The various chapters explore highly relevant issues, such as, addiction-related health problems, lifestyle-related disorders, social health problems and poor-maintenance of food hygiene and food safety. It also addresses the role of nutritional therapies for mental disorders, and includes an integrated perspective on cognition, oxidative stress and nutritional interventions in aging. Other topics include, the role of gut microbiota on human health, nutraceuticals as therapeutic agents and ketogenic diets. It also highlights malnutrition (protein energy malnutrition, starvation, malabsorption syndrome, eating disorders and overnutrition/obesity) and adipose tissue as an active endocrine organ. Moreover, it examines key concepts concerning the role of vitamins in the citric acid cycle (gluconeogenesis, ketogenesis, oxidative deamination and transamination) and precursors of coenzymes, as well as calorigenic hormones, appetite-stimulating/appetite-inhibiting hormones, anabolic and catabolic hormones affecting protein metabolism, and lipogenetic/lipolytic hormones.

Book excerpt: Since the beginning of the pandemic, efforts have been made to monitor both school closures (and re-opening) and the measures put in place to ensure continuity of learning. These include the Survey of Ministries of Education on National Responses to COVID-19, jointly supported by UNESCO, UNICEF and the World Bank. However, to date, no systematic evidence has been available on how students' learning is being affected by the disruptions caused by the pandemic or on the impact of education response measures initiated by governments. This report contributes to filling this evidence gap and includes a series of simulations of potential learning losses due to COVID-19 and exploration of their longer-term implications. The analysis is based on the Enabling learning for all framework, which outlines access, engagement and enabling environment as the three crucial enablers for learning, while the simulation assumptions are informed by the evidence on school closures and governments' education-related responses, collected through the joint survey.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: //*\\ Nautilus Book Award - Silver Medalist for Middle-Grade Nonfiction //*\\ Attention all grown-ups! Kids have questions! Now they’ll have answers. Kids of all ages have some important questions about how their bodies work—and why their parents and other adults have some strong ideas on what needs to get done every day in order to stay healthy. Children often hear: “No more screen time!” “Eat your vegetables!” "You can't have cookies for dinner!" “You need to take your medicine!” “Wash your hands! With soap!” “It’s getting late! Get ready for bed!!” In this book, Dr. Nina L. Shapiro embarks on an amazing journey through the body as it gets fed, protected, exercised, cleaned, energized, and rested. Each chapter provides kids with age-appropriate explanations and illustrations that address their very good questions about their bodies and health with solid (and fun!) science-based answers. By receiving an in-depth understanding of what it means to be healthy, strong, clean, rested, and energized, kids will soon be able to make smart decisions on their own. The human body is incredible, and the science behind how our bodies work, how the world affects our bodies, and how our bodies affect the world around us is pretty cool, too.
