Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard Studies in Classical Philology, Vol. 9 In these days, when opportunities for publication are made so easy, we are perhaps too ready to measure a Scholar's greatness by the number of printed pages which he has laid before the world. Judged by so mechanical a standard, the life work of Professor Lane might seem meager indeed. Yet Socrates left not a line behind him; and what were the writings of Schneidewin, of Karl F riederich Hermann, of Jowett, and of our own Torrey and Child, compared to the words of inspiration which fell from them in their daily meetings with their pupils? As was said by a famous scholar, on Professor Lane's death, The lessons of a great teacher become incarnate in generations of living men; 1 and by another, No one ever studied under him but found in after life the pathway of truth smoothed, and the best use of his own faculties made easier by that companionship and guidance. 11 Without detracting from the fame of those who have enriched philology by their writings, we may set beside them sometimes even above them the utterers of golden words which are handed down by their pupils to their pupils' pupils we may remember one of Professor Lane's own remarks, made to a student who was not over regular in his attendance at recitations Language, Mr. Comes from lingua, the tongue and the Latin language can be learned only from the tongue of the master. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard Studies in Classical Philology, Vol. 31 The play is not primarily concerned with the Stealing of Fire or with the Invention of the Arts or with the Destiny of Man. These three matters (especially the last two) interest the poet deeply, but they are not the heart of the drama. The action not only of the Vinctus but clearly of the Solutus too, and possibly of the whole trilogy, has for its spring the fact that Prometheus knows who is destined to overthrow Zeus, and refuses to tell. That is why - and not, after all, because he stole the fire - that he is punished in the play. And that is why, when he reveals the secret, he is released. It is desirable at the outset to be quite clear what the secret is. It is not that Zeus is destined one day to be overthrown by his son; Zeus knows that already. The secret is, which son. The most helpful commentary on this is the Theogony of Hesiod. Whatever else may be sophisticated or moralized in the Theogony, it is certainly not the matter with which we shall be dealing here. Observe that Kronos (a) is the youngest son, (b) is the most 'terrible, ' (c) hates his father. We shall find these three points recurring. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard Studies in Classical Philology, Vol. 25 A chief reason of modern writers' neglect may be recognized in the fact that no express definition or catalogue of the exempla virtutis has come down to us from the Romans themselves. So, it would seem, the term eluded notice. The fact of its currency is established by the briefest survey of their literature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard Studies in Classical Philology, Vol. 6 In inscriptions of the fifth century and fourth century B.C. and in Aristophanes, Demosthenes, and Lucian, references occur to a structure on the Acropolis at Athens which is called simply without further designation. The scholiasts, however, on the passages in which the Opisthodomus is thus referred to and the ancient lexicographers define its situation. August Boeckh believed that the Opisthodomus in question was the western chamber of the cella of the Parthenon, and maintained this view with vigour. So Leake, K. F. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard Studies in Classical Philology, 1904, Vol. 15 Note here the effective imagery by which a common metaphysical notion the inorganic character of evil - has been transformed. Note also in the preceding passage an idea fundamental in Boethius' concep tion of the history of philosophy. To him, Plato and Aristotle form a kind of philosophical orthodoxy, of which the later schools had appro priated mere broken lights. It is, indeed, this Roman passion for order, authority, which led Boethius to form his great idea of reconciling Plato and Aristotle.1 Had he lived to achieve this end, he might well have gone farther, as his theological writings already indicate, and anticipated St. Thomas in harmonizing Plato, Aristotle, and Christian doctrine in one imposing system. The idea of such a harmony, at any rate, is as clearly expressed in Boethius as in St. Thomas 2 it cannot be too often' repeated that Boethius was the first of the scholastics. Now the recognition of this fact, to which the present passage partially helps us, is a clue to the spirit and aim of the Consolatio no greater mistake could be made than to compare Boethius' intellectual methods with those of Cicero. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard Studies in Classical Philology, Vol. 29 The Greeks generally held that this immediate approach to truth was a gift of the gods. Dreams, for example, were a vision of the truth, though there were false dreams as well as true,1 and Prometheus taught men to distinguish the true from the false.1 Pindar says that the soul alone is from the gods; it sleeps while the limbs of the body are active, but when they sleep it gives in dreams clear knowledge of future joys and troubles. 1 Socrates is said to have inferred the day of his death from the dream of a woman who quoted Homer; 1 and Plato distinguishes between dreams in which man's lower nature con trols and those in which the reason rules; these may attain truth.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard Studies in Classical Philology, Vol. 12: Edited by a Committee of the Classical Instructions of Harvard University; 1901; Goodwin Volume At that time there had been a tendency to explain many construe tions by supposing an ellipsis of some expression which, when the nature of the moods was better known, proved to be unnecessary. Hence arose an Opposing tendency to eschew ellipsis altogether as a means of syntactic explanation. This tendency was assisted by the impossibility of supplying directly in many cases an ellipsis satisfactory In form, and hence it became the prevailing one, and, though otherwise disposed, I joined in this tendency and came to explain constructions without resort to ellipsis. But in the course of my lectures on the sub ject I was later forced to recognize a principle which I jocosely called, in allusion to Alice in Wonderland, the Cheshire Cat theory, that is, that an elliptic construction could naturally arise without definite ellipsis, or, in other words, you could have the grin without the cat. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard Studies in Classical Philology, Vol. 10 In view of these principles, when we find the long words which are so characteristic of Latin, the natural presumption is that (apart from obvious composition) the words have been built up by continu ous further formation by means of the living elements existing in the language, and unless some controlling reason appears to the contrary, this presumption is to be taken as true. As the suffixes are for the most part of pronominal origin we must, in analyzing a word, take off successively from the end the recognizable suffixes and discover the stems or the various steps through which the word has passed in its further formation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard Studies in Classical Philology, Vol. 18 In a word, the metrical explanations of forms that abound in Greek poetry which are given by eminent Greek metricians, or a theory of the 'rhythmical' structure of these forms that has little, if any, support in ancient tradition? These questions are of importance sufficient to warrant a thorough reconsideration of the material to which they relate. Definitions of logaoedic metre are given by Hephaestion and Aristides Quintilianus. These, unhappily, are not complete. The reason of this, however, is apparent: the metre was relatively unimportant. Both authors add their statements about it to their general treatment of the larger subjects of dactylic and anapaestic metres. But the essential fact is made clear. Hephaestion briefly defines logaoedic metre to be the combination, within the same colon, pf two or more dactyls with a trochaic syzygy, or, in ascending rhythm, of two or more anapaests with a catalectic iambic syzygy (bacchius). The most noted form, he adds, in the second category has four anapaests, the first of which may be a spondee or iambus. Logaoedic cola, thus defined, are comparatively rare in Greek comedy.
