Book excerpt: This volume contains selected expository lectures delivered at the Maurice Auslander Distinguished Lectures and International Conference, held May 1–6, 2014, at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, Woods Hole, MA. Several significant developments of the last decade in representation theory of finite-dimensional algebras are related to combinatorics. Three of the five lectures in this volume deal, respectively, with the Catalan combinatorics, the combinatorics of Gelfand-Zetlin polytopes, and the combinatorics of tilting modules. The remaining papers present history and recent advances in the study of left orders in left Artinian rings and a survey on invariant theory of Artin-Schelter regular algebras.

Book excerpt: Expanding upon the material delivered during the LMS Autumn Algebra School 2020, this volume reflects the fruitful connections between different aspects of representation theory. Each survey article addresses a specific subject from a modern angle, beginning with an exploration of the representation theory of associative algebras, followed by the coverage of important developments in Lie theory in the past two decades, before the final sections introduce the reader to three strikingly different aspects of group theory. Written at a level suitable for graduate students and researchers in related fields, this book provides pure mathematicians with a springboard into the vast and growing literature in each area.

Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of the conference ``Groups and Model Theory'', held May 30-June 3, 2011, in Ruhr, Germany, in honor of Rudiger Gobel's 70th birthday. In the last thirty years, group theory has received new input through the application of methods from logic to problems in algebra. In particular, model theory has strongly influenced both commutative and non-commutative group theory. This led to striking new developments in group theory and has had an interesting impact back on model theory. This interplay has been revisited by algebraists and model theorists and is showing strong and promising roads for future research. This book presents important current research at the border of model theory and group theory by renowned researchers. Articles in this volume cover abelian groups, modules over commutative rings, permutation groups, automorphism groups of homogeneous structures such as graphs, relational structures, geometries, topological spaces or groups, consequences of model theoretic properties like stability or categoricity, subgroups of small index, the automorphism tower problem, as well as random constructions.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Workshop and 18th International Conference on Representations of Algebras (ICRA 2018) held from August 8–17, 2018, in Prague, Czech Republic. It presents several themes of contemporary representation theory together with some new tools, such as stable ∞ ∞-categories, stable derivators, and contramodules. In the first part, expanded lecture notes of four courses delivered at the workshop are presented, covering the representation theory of finite sets with correspondences, geometric theory of quiver Grassmannians, recent applications of contramodules to tilting theory, as well as symmetries in the representation theory over an abstract stable homotopy theory. The second part consists of six more-advanced papers based on plenary talks of the conference, presenting selected topics from contemporary representation theory: recollements and purity, maximal green sequences, cohomological Hall algebras, Hochschild cohomology of associative algebras, cohomology of local selfinjective algebras, and the higher Auslander–Reiten theory studied via homotopy theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second, revised and substantially extended edition of Approximations and Endomorphism Algebras of Modules reflects both the depth and the width of recent developments in the area since the first edition appeared in 2006. The new division of the monograph into two volumes roughly corresponds to its two central topics, approximation theory (Volume 1) and realization theorems for modules (Volume 2). It is a widely accepted fact that the category of all modules over a general associative ring is too complex to admit classification. Unless the ring is of finite representation type we must limit attempts at classification to some restricted subcategories of modules. The wild character of the category of all modules, or of one of its subcategories C, is often indicated by the presence of a realization theorem, that is, by the fact that any reasonable algebra is isomorphic to the endomorphism algebra of a module from C. This results in the existence of pathological direct sum decompositions, and these are generally viewed as obstacles to classification. In order to overcome this problem, the approximation theory of modules has been developed. The idea here is to select suitable subcategories C whose modules can be classified, and then to approximate arbitrary modules by those from C. These approximations are neither unique nor functorial in general, but there is a rich supply available appropriate to the requirements of various particular applications. The authors bring the two theories together. The first volume, Approximations, sets the scene in Part I by introducing the main classes of modules relevant here: the S-complete, pure-injective, Mittag-Leffler, and slender modules. Parts II and III of the first volume develop the key methods of approximation theory. Some of the recent applications to the structure of modules are also presented here, notably for tilting, cotilting, Baer, and Mittag-Leffler modules. In the second volume, Predictions, further basic instruments are introduced: the prediction principles, and their applications to proving realization theorems. Moreover, tools are developed there for answering problems motivated in algebraic topology. The authors concentrate on the impossibility of classification for modules over general rings. The wild character of many categories C of modules is documented here by the realization theorems that represent critical R-algebras over commutative rings R as endomorphism algebras of modules from C. The monograph starts from basic facts and gradually develops the theory towards its present frontiers. It is suitable both for graduate students interested in algebra and for experts in module and representation theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graduate students typically enter into courses on string theory having little to no familiarity with the mathematical background so crucial to the discipline. As such, this book, based on lecture notes, edited and expanded, from the graduate course taught by the author at SISSA and BIMSA, places particular emphasis on said mathematical background. The target audience for the book includes students of both theoretical physics and mathematics. This explains the book’s "strange" style: on the one hand, it is highly didactic and explicit, with a host of examples for the physicists, but, in addition, there are also almost 100 separate technical boxes, appendices, and starred sections, in which matters discussed in the main text are put into a broader mathematical perspective, while deeper and more rigorous points of view (particularly those from the modern era) are presented. The boxes also serve to further shore up the reader’s understanding of the underlying math. In writing this book, the author’s goal was not to achieve any sort of definitive conciseness, opting instead for clarity and "completeness". To this end, several arguments are presented more than once from different viewpoints and in varying contexts.

Book excerpt: The Virasoro algebra is an infinite dimensional Lie algebra that plays an increasingly important role in mathematics and theoretical physics. This book describes some fundamental facts about the representation theory of the Virasoro algebra in a self-contained manner. Topics include the structure of Verma modules and Fock modules, the classification of (unitarizable) Harish-Chandra modules, tilting equivalence, and the rational vertex operator algebras associated to the so-called minimal series representations. Covering a wide range of material, this book has three appendices which provide background information required for some of the chapters. The authors organize fundamental results in a unified way and refine existing proofs. For instance in chapter three, a generalization of Jantzen filtration is reformulated in an algebraic manner, and geometric interpretation is provided. Statements, widely believed to be true, are collated, and results which are known but not verified are proven, such as the corrected structure theorem of Fock modules in chapter eight. This book will be of interest to a wide range of mathematicians and physicists from the level of graduate students to researchers.

Book excerpt: This book, which explores recent trends in the representation theory of algebras and its exciting interaction with geometry, topology, commutative algebra, Lie algebras, combinatorics, quantum algebras, and theoretical field, is conceived as a handbook to provide easy access to the present state of knowledge and stimulate further development. The many topics discussed include quivers, quivers with potential, bound quiver algebras, Jacobian algebras, cluster algebras and categories, Calabi-Yau algebras and categories, triangulated and derived categories, and quantum loop algebras. This book consists of thirteen self-contained expository survey and research articles and is addressed to researchers and graduate students in algebra as well as a broader mathematical community. The articles contain a large number of examples and open problems and give new perspectives for research in the field.
