Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The alma mater of both Dr. Booker T. Washington and Wanda Sykes, Hampton University's history is a story of ingenuity and inspiration. Hampton University is situated on an arm of Hampton Roads, two miles from Fort Monroe. Founded under the leadership of Brig. Gen. Samuel Armstrong in 1868 and incorporated in 1870 as Hampton Normal & Agricultural Institute, it was the first permanent school for freedmen in the South. Industrial and normal education through self-help was the fundamental principle of the school; trades and industries were taught and practiced. Among the university's noteworthy alumni are Dr. Booker T. Washington, renowned orator and Tuskegee Institute founder; Alberta Williams King, mother of Martin Luther King Jr.; Marcus Dixon, NFL player for the Kansas City Chiefs; and Wanda Sykes, comedian and actress. Today, the university is recognized for the Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute, the world's largest cancer proton treatment center, and its local commitment to the commercial revitalization of downtown Hampton, Virginia. Through the use of vintage photographs, Hampton University shows how the university community continues to uphold Armstrong's legacy by "keeping their eye to the future."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Civil Rights and Politics at Hampton Institute presents the story of how one of the preeminent--and historically conservative--private institutions of black higher education came to play an important part in the struggle for full racial equality. Hoda Zaki traces Hampton Institute's progressive impact to its first black and alumnus president, Alonzo G. Moron, who used his office to launch a powerful and sustained attack against segregation. A brilliant man, who was uncompromising in his beliefs about creating a more inclusive democracy, Moron struggled against conservative forces both outside of and within his own institution before his ouster by Hampton's predominantly white governing board in 1959--just a year before the Greensboro sit-ins signaled the death knell for the segregationist era in which his institution had prospered. Hoda Zaki details the significance of Moron's complicated career through discussions of his theories of citizenship education, his work in promoting equal rights as a mission for the college, and the political philosophy (as evidenced in his speeches) that he shared with other civil rights leaders of the era.

He will not be sent to the island of the sea to please Mr. Graves, of Georgia. The negro is here to stay, to work, to learn, to obey, to pray and to accumulate property and to become a responsible factor in his own country and nation." --Dr. John Jefferson Smallwood September 25, 1903 "John J. Smallwood is the most eloquent negro orator that has ever spoken in Steubenville. He is dark in complexion, rather fine looking, a plain but substantial dresser, unassuming in his manners, a profound scholar, and a master of the pure English. He has a full round voice, very eloquent as a speaker, logical, graceful, and convincing. Upon the subject of the "Negro Problem" he has no equal in this country." The Steubenville Weekly Herald Star September 25, 1903 "His style of oratory, which is dignified and graceful, is suggestive of that of Hon., Frederick Douglass, and his friends, of whom he has a host, numbering among them some of the leading men and women in New England, say that in time he will surpass Douglass." The Boston Globe November 16, 1890 "On my return to America, on the question of labor, I learned that a colored man could better represent his race upon such issues when they came before the public." Dr. John Jefferson Smallwood The Boston Sunday Globe November 16, 1890 "But through the broader knowledge which cultivated intelligence brings, Dr. Smallwood has not stopped at the race question, but has entered upon the agitation of temperance and labor, topics affecting American citizens, white and colored." The Boston Globe November 16, 1890 The Boston Gl "I was only twelve years of age when I ran away from my birthplace of Rich Square, NC . . . I walked sixty miles from N.C. into the town of Franklin [VA] where my poor, slave-born father and mother once lived and where my great but misguided grandfather was executed Aug. [1831]. I speak of my grandfather (Nat Turner) who led the Southampton Insurrection in [1831] as being "great." I do not mean in a foolish, unselfish way but as a fact." November 16, 1890 DDDDr. John Jefferson Smallwood December 26, 1903

Book excerpt: This two-volume set showcases the achievements of African American entrepreneurs and the various businesses that they founded, developed, or promote as well as the accomplishments of many African American leaders—both those whose work is well-known and other achievers who have been neglected in history. Nearly everyone is familiar with New York City's Wall Street, a financial center of the world, but much fewer individuals know about the black Wall Streets in Durham and Tulsa, where prominent examples of successful African American leaders emerged. Encyclopedia of African American Business: Updated and Revised Edition tells the fascinating story that is the history of African American business, providing readers with an inspiring image of the economic power of black people throughout their existence in the United States. It continues the historical account of developments in the African American business community and its leaders, describing the period from 18th-century America to the present day. The book describes current business leaders, opens a fuller and deeper insight into the topics chosen, and includes numerous statistical tables within the text and in a separate section at the back of the book. The encyclopedia is arranged under three broad headings: Entry List, Topical Entry List, and Africa American Business Leaders by Occupation. This arrangement introduces readers to the contents of the work and enables them to easily find information about specific individuals, topics, or occupations. The book will appeal to students from high school through graduate school as well as researchers, library directors, business enterprises, and anyone interested in biographical information on African Americas who are business leaders will benefit from the work.
